[Official] Smith re-signs with the Storm

Nope, end of 2015. And we'd be far from guaranteed to sign him given that everybody already knows he's a gun now.

Hookers off contract this year: Smith, Nathan Friend, Ennis, De Gois, Kingston, Morris, Kostjasyn, Lawton, Mitchell, Srama, Waddell, Romelo, Koroisau

Friend and Morris will probably retire, I can't see us chasing Ennis, Kingston and De Gois are both in decline, Lawton, Mitchell, Waddell and Romelo will never be more than back up options and Kostjasyn is the epitome of 'jack of all trades, master of none.

Probably should just get rid of macca though anyway right? I mean Granville will be great

Out of those, Srama has a lot of potential, Smith can deliver a premiership and help our rookie halves develop similar to Cronk. The rest are meh.

He couldn't be worse than Macca.

And he'd be on a lot less cash.

I'd be happy to have Ennis back. He's 100 times better than Macca.

Macca has played 100 first grade games, he's not getting any better people.

Unless you think that we are going to sign Madge or Bellache in the next week.

Granville couldn't be worse? You understand that he is 25 and every other club has passed on him, including clubs that boast such great hookers as Matt Keating and buttriss. Right?

You do realise Macca has played 100 first grade games and even his greatest fans don't seem to able to point to anything he has achieved.

Ps don't see any other clubs trying to out bid us for Macca's services.

By broncos4lifs logic Macca must be terrible if other teams aren't swarming to get him.

Macca would last about 2 seconds on the open market. I'm not saying he's a superstar but the fact is their a many hookers that are far worse than him.

I'm also not the only one that thinks that way, 1910 said something nearly identical to this before, so what's your issue?

Nope, nothing.

You're right there are worse hookers. That's not the point.

I just think he's been given more than his fair share of chances and he hasn't come
up to the mark.

My point is simple because noone has signed Granville previously doesn't mean that he isn't our best option. Noone in Sydney signed Langer so does that mean he was no good?

Conversely the Eels signed Norman for 500k does that make him a superstar.

Ability isn't a function of how many people want to sign you and at what age. Brenton Lawrence is a prime example.

Can Smith really deliver a premiership without Slater and Cronk? I know how good he is but we could easily sign him and not win a premiership. I think Smith would be a great signing for the club but I still don't want him. I just don't like him and think what we really need is a gun halfback. Of cours who knows Hunt might be that guy this year.

Re: [RUMOUR] Macca to Storm

It doesn't.

If it was a perfect world..

We get Smith, win 1-2 premierships.
Storm get Macca, wins 1 premiership, heir to QLD #9.
Smith retires, freeing up 1.5mil, we throw 800k at Macca at his peak.

Really doubt things would go that smoothly though but I don't see us wanting to keep Macca or him wanting to stay in Brisbane playing only a handful of games during injuries and rep duty.

Maybe you're right. McCullough has actually gone backwards since his debut for us, maybe he needs a change of scenery to get the best out of him. Then afterwards we can grab him back if he makes it.

At the moment, it's been 5 full years that he's had at the Broncos, and there are just as many better hookers than there are worse than him in the NRL.

Langer wasn't 25 and unsigned by anyone, so it's a bit different

Of those available hookers, we should go hard for Srama should things end up badly. Injuries have been bad for him, but he'll be a gun if he can stay on the park.

Re: Macca to Storm

He needs to improve his passing speed and his decision making at times. IMHO he isn't that far off

In many ways this is true and I believe this statement is 100% correct. However, I thought the same thing about 2 years ago and really not much has changed. And some of the painfully bad plays persist. Namely the show and go from dummy half and the "I think I'll grubber it 2m backwards from dummy half when I'm 2m from the try-line". They may seem like small things, but I believe a truly class player should have eliminated that rubbish from his game after so many failures at it.

His show and go is by far the most predictable play in the game.

Having Milford and Barba around Smith is not that far from having Slater and Cronk, besides everything that Hunt would learn from Smith (in the same way Widdop learned a lot, and he doesn't have the talent or vision of Hunt), so it is a very real possibility that getting Smith would deliver us a premiership, or at the very least set us in great shape to win one in the short term.

Besides that, we would get a guy with a lot of RL smarts in the coaching staff, something we all know is a necessity.

Macca is not as bad as some paint him, but he isn't a great/very good hooker either. I do like the kid, see plenty of potential in him, but he needs some serious coaching to get rid of his flaws, meaning a "trade" with Melbourne would be win/win. Besides, like someone said, what's to stop us to throw a lot of Smith's coin at Macca, if Bellyache has managed to get all the potential out of him once the Aus Captain retires?

I am surprised people will let their personal dislike for Smith override the clear benefits his recruitment would mean to the Broncos present and future.

Nope, nothing.

That's the best you've got?

Best player in 2012 when we finished 8th and went terribly. That's like saying "this end of the poo smells the least".

2013 emerging origin. He's behind Smith, Ballin and Friend for the real gig AT LEAST.

If he was as good as his fans on here think, why would Brisbane even think about offering Smith the gig?

He just ain't worth persisting with. Had it too easy for too long.

A lot of people don't want to win. They'd prefer to remain "pure" and miss the final every year.

The are the sort of people who are worried about players being upset because you bought someone who plays their position.

You can usually spot them because they like to compare our players to buttress and Matt Keating and they accuse anyone who says we should let someone go of "not being a real supporter".
