[Official] Smith re-signs with the Storm

that's cooky talk ... would've improved our side and our play / leadership but our current squad is much more than just a cameron smith shy of a premiership, let alone a dynasty...

there are so many factors and elements and luck ect that all have to align absolutely perfectly for any side to win a premiership nowadays ...

As far as I see it, the main things we are missing in order to be premiership contenders are:

Quality Halves, Quality Hooker, Quality Coach and Quality Defence.

Smith would have added something in each of those areas, as he's a terrific defender, the best hooker, makes halves look better and clearly has an excellent footy brain. There would still be question marks because no one knows if that'll be enough for the halves to become good and the rest of the team could still be dudding it up in defence...but just one signing would be a huge step in the right direction.

I am Big Pete, thanks champ! Did you listen to the Hottest 100? Of course you did. Was Alex Turner wasted on-air or was that just his usual swagger? Either way he's too cool for anyone to really care.

Anyway, back on topic, kind of disappointed that Smith may not be coming now but I won't be losing sleep over it. TBH we really needed him for this year, he's already on the verge of being too old so by the time 2015 rolls around who knows what state he'll be in. No doubt he'll still be better than most other hookers in the comp, including Macca, but at over 1 mil a season we're better off going after someone else. Ideally we need to unearth the next Cam Smith, someone young who we can build a future around and who has genuine talent.

Maybe I went overboard to cammac, sorry buddy, I've probably had a few too many.

it would've been exciting to get smith but imo it's equally as exciting to ponder what might be with that preposterous amount of money the broncos were going to lay out for him ... there has to be a be a very very shiny silver lining for the broncos if they dip out on smith .. if gee and pals fail to make it rain recruitment wise over the next two or three years then they need to be forcibly removed from Fulcher Rd.

I think Jake Friend would be perfect. He is a quality hooker, and still has many years left in him. Now that he is over being an immature little shit, Broncos should do everything they can to lure him to the club when he is off contract on November 1st. He will be the next QLD and AUS hooker.

They should get rid of Gee. He's had his chance.

Hooker is the least of our problems.

Agree. If we become fit enough to compete for 80 minutes and develop a defence that can actually stop other teams scoring more points than we can (we were good for about 16 points at best last year...) then many of Macca's deficiencies won't seem so bad.

He is no Cameron Smith, but in the absences of anyone else...

Granville looked alright in the few minutes he got, but that's a lot different to being the starting hooker for the whole season.

We need to find a new starting hooker, but they don't grow on trees. I'd pass on Smith. Too much cash, too little return on investment at his age. We have far more holes that need plugging and that money I think can be better spent...

Which players (who are actually available) should it be spent on. Remembering DCE and Friend are NOT available.

[RUMOUR] Macca to Storm

Mods can work out if this fits somewhere else.

Can't reveal source but rumour is that if Smith comes to Brisbane, Macca will go to the Storm.

Anyone else heard this?

Re: Macca to Storm

Great. So we will get a fantastic hooker for a few years and then be completely fucked. Whereas storm get a very good hooker who could well get much better for at least 10 years. Wouldn't surprise me if the broncos let this happen... Would be par for the course really.

Would be interesting if it did happen and macca became the next to play for qld. After we have all been told that we know nothing for thinking macca is worthwhile

Re: Macca to Storm

McCullough a very good hooker? that's stretching the truth at best, solid but largely inconsistent and lacking in key areas that for over 125 games still exist, signing Smith offers not only improvement for the side in the short term but mentoring for other playmaker's for the future, it also gives time for the Broncos to look for a real replacement there for the long term. McCullough has massive improvementsi n his game to be made before his anywhere near being a very good hooker and time is running out, we can't afford to carry another playmaker who isn't upto scratch.

Not just a great hooker for a few years but potentially a great coach for a few decades as well.

Also, I don't see how we would be fucked. If we get Smith we just need 1 youngster at hooker to be groomed by Cam and we'll be anything other than fucked.

Also think how much easier life will be for a Strasser or Milford or Anthony Taylor if they get to start their halves career with a guy like Smith taking so much of the pressure off.

McCullough is not a very good hooker. Buderas was a very good hooker, Farah is a very good hooker. McCullough is not at the very good hooker level.

He could get much better over the next 10 years, then again he might not. Only the most ardent Macca fanboy would pass up on Smith to retain him, assuming there is no other player fallout in the money needed for Smith.

You're scenario of Macca being the next Qld hooker has more chance of not happening than happening considering Friend and probably Segeyaro are in front of him.

He needs to improve his passing speed and his decision making at times. IMHO he isn't that far off

Re: Macca to Storm

Also heard the Storm will be interested in Srama if Smith leaves.
