If you look like a city like Melbourne who have to support numerous AFL teams, they still turn up.

The worst crowd figures for this year so far is 14,000.

The best 90,000 at the MCG.

On average, every game registers an attendance between 20-50k.

How do they survive and Sydney with the NRL can't?

It's because of the trains, and the nightlife and the roads, and everything else...

Don't compare sports, totally different sport, totally different sporting culture, totally different everything! It's such a dumb comparison. Look at the AFL's highest home crowd average and compare it with the NRL's highest crowd: HUGE difference. Clearly, the AFL on a whole has had a better job than the NRL since day 1.

Translation: Melbourne is a much better sporting public than Sydney, with comparable population and comparable number of teams. They do something right, Sydney does everything wrong, but we can't be fucked fixing it. We'll settle with our 10000 crowds and be happy.

Sydney = FAIL.

Because I'm bored and lame I did the maths.

Brisbane Bears/Lions home crowds since 1987:
5,209,655 people, 256 games, an average of 20350

Brisbane Broncos home crowds since 1988:
6,788,493 people, 259 games, an average of 26210

ROCK = LOGIC FAIL.

Oh, and I excluded finals games.

Really? Lions won 3 premierships and made 4 grand finals in a row, or did you forget that?
Broncos since 1998 made (and won) 3 grand finals.

The fact is Sydney has more people, claim to be more loyal to their sport, yet don't turn up at all.

YOU'RE KILLING RUGBY LEAGUE!

Yeah, Sydney is the heart of rugby league, but attendees are blood. If my heart was pumping as few blood cells around as Sydney is to rugby league, I'd be dead.

*turns on Rock Justifier*

But the Broncos spent the first 5 years after 1998 playing at ANZ Stadium. Shit stadium, shit transport, shit location, people had better things to do than go to the footy.......

:P

Still, producing numbers under 10k every second week doesn't help at all. Regardless of the team, or the venue.

Yeah Sydney is killing rugby league by producing bigger crowds every single year! [icon_lol1. [icon_lol1. [eusa_doh

Here's an analogy for your thick Sydney skull to comprehend.

A forward, let's call him Sammy T, plays a game and makes 1 hit up for 1 metre. Abysmal. Appalling. Disgusting performance.

The following week he makes 2 hit ups and makes 2 metres.
Then 3 hit ups and 3 metres.
etc etc etc
And after 20-odd games he's making 22 hit ups and 100 metres.

By your logic, because he's been improving every week, he's the "heart of the side". Despite the fact that another forward, let's call him Nicky K, has been comfortably making 25 hit ups and 160 metres every week.

FYI, Sammy T is Sydney. Nicky K is Brisbane, Townsville, Gold Coast and Newcastle.

I said Brisbane Lions, not Brisbane Bears.

How embarrassing is it that the Lions have had a better home crowd average since 1998 than the Brisbane Broncos?

The Broncos have been way more successful since 1998 and yet the Lions have a better home crowd average.

Even then the average difference is minimal.

Lions: 27946 (and falling)
Broncos: 26639 (and climbing)

We will overtake the Lions' average attendance sometime in the next 12 months.

Given the Broncos averaged just 21298 at ANZ Stadium from 1998-2003, that's a pretty good achievement. And averaged 30975 since moving to Suncorp Stadium.

Broncos > all of Sydney

That was dumb Coxy, please don't do that again. That's a stupid analogy. If a forward made 1 hit up then the next week 2, next week 3 etc, that would STILL be shit, because if you put it in context, you can't soley rely on stats to compare a forward to another forward, however you CAN compare crowds purely on how many people you get through the gates.

Stop while you're behind, fact is that Sydney crowds are booming, League in Sydney is booming, interest in League is booming.

Hahahhaa.

Translation: LALALALALLALALALALA I can't hear you LALALALLALALA!

Rubbish, if you want to compare AFL teams in Melbourne to NRL teams in Sydney, then comparing the only AFL team in Brisbane to the only NRL team is Brisbane is only fair, and by comparison the Broncos should be hitting crowds WAAAAAY more than the Lions but they are STILL waiting to get a better home crowd average after all these years.[/quote:1zcduw5u]

Valid comparison: Years where the teams were at the same venues they are now.

So 2003-2010.

Broncos: 30975
Lions: 30458

Broncos ahead :P Hahahha.

Why? We're also one of the heartlands of AFL given we get 100000-odd Victards move up here every year :P

You're scraping the bottom of the barrell to win your argument by comparing venues only.

And even still when you compare Venues, the Broncos still struggle to get a bigger crowd than the Lions. If South East QLD was the "heart" of rugby league then they'd be getting at least another 15,000 more than AFL on their crowds don't you think? [icon_wink

Not when most of their fixtures are the same nights.

But you'd think for Sydney being a rugby league heartland, you'd be able to GET crowds above 30k right?

Pretty sure Sydney just pulled 2 X 30,00+ crowds over the weekend.[/quote:27eh804a]

I wouldn't say it was consistent though. Would you?
