PLAYER Payne Haas

Honest question, but is RU bigger than RL in Australia?
How do they have so much money to just pick and choose from RL to pilfer for their ranks.

I went to a RU high school, and even there RL was more popular outside of the actual RU school side.
I just dont get how these other codes can throw ludicrous money at our top players and take them at will.
Neither do I really regarding how they have in income stream to be able to do that given a lot of the recent media before Eddie Jones coming back was that Union was dying etc etc

I presume their income sources are predominantly sponsorship with a portion coming from the super rugby comp as well which I reckon would be struggling to pull crowds to most games amongst a crowded sporting landscape, particularly for the waratahs here in Sydney with soccer and league. Plus the fact the Waratahs are struggling results wise as well

They may also have a decent stream of money come from the international games but they very rarely host games here so cant see how that would get them that much and its been 15yrs nearly since Australia last had the union world cup to generate money.

Its definitely a weird one

God I hate Corey Parker..

Union, last 5 years:

2017 - lost $3.7mil
2018 - made $5.2 mil by dumping $15 mil in expenses.
2019 - lost $9.4mil
2020 - lost $27.1mil
2021 - lost $4.5mil
2022 - report is due in the next month. They're talking themselves up while trying to sell off to private equity.

They are reportedly $25 million in the red and have big loans.

If they manage to put a big money offer in for Haas, it will purely be either tax payers or private equity funding it because they are not in a position to be splashing cash.

Do they get a windfall from the world cup as a hosting nation??

Maybe they're getting a paycheck for it from broadcasters as well... Suaalii is coming in 2025 and Haas is off contract 2025 as well... maybe a rights deal specific to the world cup and lions tour is set to kick off around then to fund their spending.

Their issue is that blowing a load on league players doesn't help them long term if they just end up legging it as soon as the money dries up.

They could go there get a paycheck, play in the world cup and then head back to league, where the salary cap continues to go up.

Not sure if this federal funding helps chase players from the NRL, but it says to help rebuild the game and for grassroots so maybe?

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that it comes out now while we are apparently in extension talks and he is still months away from being able to officially take offers from nrl clubs.

As good as he is, as consistent as he is, I still don’t think he’s ever going to be the difference between wining & losing, I don’t think any prop can be. We would likely need to go to market for another prop or two, but I think Patty & Jensen up front is still a capable partnership. It’s the bench that would need boosting.

It's all talk from Australian rugby, but just incase just offer Haas the big bucks on a long contract. Walsh and Haas will build this team for years.

God I hate Corey Parker..
He’s such a dickhead & the single biggest disgrace to put on a Broncos jersey.

If not for a year or 2 at max towards his retirement years, his career is predominantly riddled with silly errors & utter garbage. The fuckhead now blabbers as if he’s a game changer through out his career. Dumb head moron.

Reading between the lines here, I’d say that if he stays in league it’s with us, I think that’s the good news here. The fact the Roosters are re-signing JWH and picked up the guy from Penrith mean they are out of the race. I do fear though that this rugby offer will legit be huge and just might be too much to say no to.

I agree Parker is a dickhead.
But Anthony Milford says hello regarding the disgraceful Jersey wearing.

That bloke will go down as the worst signing in the clubs history for me.

Worst signing ever.......?

You mean the guy who almost single handedly won us a GF a few years back....?

Puhleease. 🙄

Payne accept the Broncos offer you son of a bitch

Fairly obvious Parker got knocked back when he applied to be apart of the coaching staff in some capacity.
I believe he was sacked by Kevvie a few years ago. He offered his services to Titans and was ignored.
