PLAYER Payne Haas

As long as we don't put off other necessary signings as a result. Haas and his management would already know what is out there, so testing the market is rubbish.

If testing the market is rubbish, the why does almost every player do it (at least once during their career) ... Including some of the greatest one club players like Darren Lockyer and Cam Smith

1.25 in Sydney is less than 1.1 here, in the hand. Dude is crazy if he leaves. But, if he's going to, he should make that call now and not string the club along when we could be planning for his replacement. Especially when there's the likes of Tino and Fifi off contract NOW. If he stalls only to still knock us back, I'll be doubly pissed.
People keep saying this but what does it really mean? Why would it cost you $250k+ a year more to live in Sydney?

Payne has never been rock solid in his football commitment to anyone- he was at the Titans and Warriors, played Meninga on the Gold Coast, signed with the Broncos, nearly signed with the Storm. His six-year Broncos deal in 18 is a marvel and I remember Bennett saying it will stop this coming up every 12 months.

It's mainly due to property prices.

Even my wife and I are so tempted to move to qld for the cheap houses lol

The tolls are out of control there mate. Last time I lived there it cost us on average $30.50 just to take the bins out to the kerbside for pick up.

We had to limit walking our dog to every other day as the tolls were just crippling us.

Time for a line in the sand. $1.1m is good value for him, good value for us and he gets to stay near his family and play for a contender. It ticks every single box and is good for both parties.

The only possible reason he wouldn't sign is because he wants more money, and if that's the case then pull the offer and start looking at alternatives.

Sick and tired of this. If you want to be a Bronco, prove it and sign now.. If not, then see you later.
He's a Bronco for at least another two grand finals. What's the hurry?

I’ve gone from thinking Payne would stay to 99.9% convinced he’s gone.
Unfortunately as a result of thinking we would have retained him we lost Keenan and Fleggs in the process. No doubt due to cap space to ensure we keep the stars like Payne. For this reason, put a timeframe on him. Get it sorted one way or another. No release for next year, and also remind him that we shouldn’t have granted him the upgrade that we gave him last year to remain happy.

We lost both of those in the pre-season, and for the 2024 season while Haas would still be on our books.

Not to mention that they both got very good offers, that we were never going to match.

The decision on Haas had zero effect on whether we kept Palasia and Flegs

We could have used Hass's 2025 money to back pay their contracts i.e. cheap for 2024 and then double for 2025 to make up for it. So it could of had an effect...

Broncos would have been looking at their books for the players coming off contract this year and next year and planning for that. Clubs are always looking at their future spend.

That would have impacted our offer for the likes of Palasia and Flegler, because that money was being allocated to the more important players.

Disagree.
Payne is top of priority. The club would have been looking at the books and seeing how they were going to fit Payne in long-term. As such there would have been a squeeze on what could be offered to other players moving forward. It’s a gamble, and looks like it may well not come off now. Thats why I’d be putting a timeframe on him so that we don’t lose anyone else whilst Payne sits on his hands. Theres nothing to say payne will even make a decision this year on his future.
