I wasn't convinced by Melbourne all year. They're Melbourne, I get why the market opened with them and the Panthers as the favourites but I think Melbourne were the favourites all year?
Betting markets are obviously different but even most of the "experts" were saying they were a sure thing...at least until the Panthers decided to get involved and then it became even money. Some really clunky wins and I think a number of their players are living off Origin games and past heroics tbh.
This season was perfectly setup for Melbourne to win it all.
They finished 2 games clear as minor premiers the year before and it was really only Panthers that they just couldn't beat.
But Panthers were losing players again (Luai, JFH, Turuva, etc.), they didnt have a home ground and they were going to Vegas... so a down year was very much on the cards for Penrith and was looking that way until they exploded in about Rd 12
The rest of the top 4 was
- Rorters... lost a heap of players and was looking like a rebuild year (JWH, Keary, Manu, Suaalii, etc.)
- Sharks... pretenders anyway
Broncos had finished 12th and were potentially needing 12 months under Madge before we'd see them at their best.
Other than that it was bunnies under Wayne (but they got hit with injuries again) and a building dogs team (but probably still a couple years off). Raiders popped up out of nowhere as a genuine threat, but to start the year the bookies had them for the spoon.
Meanwhile storm picked up players like Stefano and were looking stronger than the team that won the minor premiership... so they were the clear favourites to start the year, and when you have Bellamy as coach who's one of the best at managing his squad through the year to get them into the finals in good shape.
For them to have fumbled the comp this year is pretty insane.
They just couldn't get it together and play consistently or to their normal ruthless nature at basically any point across the year.
This one will hurt Bellamy... it was all there on a platter for them and they looked pretty poor across the year based on their normal standards.
****ing great to see and long may it continue
