Honestly the "Croft couldn't make it for Melbourne" line is so boring and overused.

If you have a legitimate criticism by all means but it's a lazy criticism.

Thurston wasn't wanted by the dogs.
We didn't want Slater.
Ponga wasn't getting selected by the Cowboys.

There's a million reasons players don't succeed at one club, but it doesn't mean they're not worth a gamble.

I'm not saying he'll be a superstar but 400k X 2 years is an excellent gamble and he has more potential than anyone we have on our books for that position.

Pretty much this. I just fail to see much negative to this signing. We were scarily short on halves depth before, SOS is still injured and unproven anyway and Paix is by all accounts being groomed as a hooker. This also points to certain names not being in the side at all next year which is worth the price of admission alone.

We have a halfback who comes from one of the most dominant sides in the competition that uses a game plan which focuses entirely on every other player in their spine and they fell away directionally once they dropped him late in the season

Also as previously mentioned he was cooper Cronks preferred choice to replace him at the roosters if he had his way

If Croft couldn't make it in the Storm system then what makes you think he'll make it in ours? Is he a proven winner in the number 7?

Maybe playing under a psychopath in Smith has its downside.

He's fairly cheap for a half, and is only being signed for 2 years. Sounds like a risk worth taking IMO.

Dearden is only going to be 19 next year. Even the best halves only started becoming quality in their early 20s. He'll have to be some sort of beyond Thurston-level freak to be a good half in the next year or two.

It seems that Croft was stifled at Melbourne due to Smith and Munster’s dominance. His best games for them were during origin where he could play as a traditional dominant 7. Of course there’s a risk whether he’ll realise that form consistently in our team where he can be the dominant half. His defence was not great in the Melbourne games I’ve watched, though it’s hard to tell whether that’s his fault or just poor communication on that edge (Chambers and Vuni). It’s still a signing we needed because we simply cannot put the pressure on Dearden to lead us for a whole season.

This. There is a reason Cronk wanted the Roosters to go after Croft but they ended up with the cheats son.

Croft does not have to be our flashy half, he needs to work the game plan, order the troops and provide a solid kicking game. With Milf as Xfactor. I think him and Milf could really work.

This if true is a good signing.

Could you name anyone who has improved since leaving the Storm though?

Not saying that Croft is destined to fail just because the Storm let him go I’m just not totally convinced he’s exactly what we need.

He steered them to a grand final last year and they lost their way when he was dropped this year so he must have something going for him game management wise

their game plan does not evolve around their halfback, it is everyone but the halfback that is why he has a low amount
