Q-CUP Queensland Cup 2023

Paix is in his fifth season of Cup and fourth season of NRL and we are still seeing the same performances and having the same conversations that we saw/had in 2019. An upwards movement in 21 season but still talking about improvement and conditions.

Paix problem continues to be he is between jobs. He never plays 20 NRL games and he never plays 20 ISC games so it's always hard to get a read on anything or track improvement.

In 2021 I thought he improved his green light play his positioning everything went upwards when he played 10 games for Souths.

Then last season it's back to six ISC games and 12 NRL games off the bench. So, you don't really learn too much more.

This year he's gone six Cup games and 14 NRL games from the bench.

I thought last season in ISC he was mostly poor- came back at the end of the year and just went back to a 1980's hooker- pass and tackle.

Yesterday Souths were noticeably slower and clunky when he was the hooker. I don't think he suits what Souths are doing at the moment.

In 2021 I thought he did Souths looked better with him on there- in the final against Townsville Souths don't win without him even though they had Mam and Isaako.

Souths had a good combo this year with Eggerling and Mozer, they complement each other. Paix has sort of thrown that all off.

I said a few weeks ago Pereira was the best winger in the Cup and should be the winger of the year and nothing I saw yesterday changed my mind. He's stays out when he should, and scores tries off Sailor but then he comes in and does great grunt work.

80 minutes
2 tries.
18 runs
233m
3-line breaks
1 try assist.
12 tackle breaks

could he be an option to replace Herbie next season (probably with Cobbo moving to center)

@1910 gun to your head, if you HAD to replace Reynolds next season by shifting either Madden or Sailor into the first grade spine - who would it be, how would you fit the pieces, and why ?

Doesn`t jump for contested balls very well .
Can be exploited by tall wingers .

I see both your points. I was happy to get him from Saints, because he is a worker. Don’t like the fact that pretty much all winger’s except for To’o are taller. Look at him though…. He’s still solid on the wing

I like him .
He has good character on the field . But there are reasons he`s further down the pecking order behind Mariner , Cobbo , Arthars and Oates . Probably Sailor too .

Can’t argue with that. Cobbo will be a centre. Mariner is the future and Arthars is playing the house down.
As for Oates? He has a wing spot for as long as he is willing. Might not have the speed, but he is as reliable as they come and he is willing to do the work.

Yeah i agree, He's insanely good with the ball. His only problem is that he is lacks ability in the air. Arthars, cobbo, mariner and Oates can all jump!

Madden.

Sailor's first half was exceptional yesterday four try assists and did it all- kicked for a try, flick pass, long pass and short pass- then ran 50m. Sailor is going to be up there with the Petero Medal.

But last season when he was in the halves for six games it was terrible- I acknowledge Souths were terrible and that wouldn't have helped but I think Sailor is the type of player that you can let do halves things but not make him be a half.

Madden runs too much for my liking but he's a half.

My big fault with Madden was shown on Sunday- Wynnum score 30 points and their half doesn't have a single try assists, line break assists, line break or even engage the line for anyone yet runs 21 times.

Madden kicked beautifully yesterday, and I don't think Wynnum get 30 points without his long kicking game. He's selfless with his kicking.

I thought Madden was better against the Cowboys although still a few times I thought gees.

Jack Ahearn is calling time on one of the most influential careers in Norths Devils history.

The club captain has announced that Saturday’s home clash with PNG Hunters will be his last before retirement.

“It’s been a big decision for me because I know I still have several years of footy left but this is the right time for me and my family,” Ahearn said.

“I’ll miss a lot of things about footy but I’m just grateful for everything that the game has given to me.”

Ahearn, 30, is training to be a firefighter and he will begin his new career in November, restricting the time that he can devote to football alongside his family commitments with wife Brianna, son Kyrie and daughter Zariah.

Ahearn told his coaches and teammates in June that this would be his last season but he kept the decision under wraps. He was desperate to play in another finals series but the Devils’ hopes ended with last Saturday’s loss to Sunshine Coast Falcons.

Devils fans are encouraged to get to Bishop Park on Saturday to farewell a player whose presence has been enormous in Devils history.

He was the first player signed by then coach Rohan Smith in late 2017 for a rebuild that has yielded remarkable dividends at the club.

Ahearn led the Devils to premierships in 2021 and 2022.

He was the competition’s halfback of the year in 2021, when he also finished in the top three for voting for the fullback of the year.

He has been named the Devils player of the year for each of his four years at Bishop Park, equalling the club record.

Ahearn has played more than 100 games for the Devils in a Hostplus Cup career that has yielded more than 150 appearances for Norths, Souths Logan and Redcliffe.

“Jack has so many achievements in his time at Norths but his most important has been the standards he has set as a person,” Devils CEO Troy Rovelli said.

“He’s simply one of the finest people in rugby league. He’s dedicated, principled, motivated and he’s very fair. He also happens to be one of the best players in Cup since its inception.

“He’ll be missed at the Devils but we will honour Jack by maintaining the standards that he has set here in conjunction with the likes of his premiership co-captain Michael Sio and other leaders in our club.

“We want Jack to stay involved in some capacity at Norths so we’ll be talking to him about opportunities in the future.”

Devils coach Dave Elliott praised Ahearn’s impact on the club and the competition.

“Jack is such an important figure in this competition because he’s been a top player for so many years and he’s been the captain in back-to-back premierships,” Elliott said.

“He’ll be missed across the board because the competition has been so much better because of players like Jack. It’s been a privilege to work with him.”

The only mystery of Ahearn’s career is how he wasn’t chosen to play NRL.

He was a member of the Junior Kangaroos and named in the NRL Under 20 team of the year in 2013.

In 2021, he led a team of pure Devils-contracted players to beat Wynnum Manly, with six Broncos players including eventual Origin star Selwyn Cobbo, in the grand final.

“That just didn’t come my way but I know that there are a lot of things in your career that are outside of your control so I accept that,” Ahearn said.

“I’ve got a lot to be thankful for and there are a lot of people who I want to thank in the week ahead, not the least my family.

“This club has had a lot of belief in me and my time at the Devils will always be the most significant in my career.

“I’m grateful to have played with so many great people and I hope that I’ve made a positive impact at a club that is proudly 90 years old.”

Ahearn joked that he would “be sore for at least two weeks” after Saturday’s game because of the physical nature of clashes with the PNG Hunters.

“I’m not too emotional about it yet but I’m sure it will dawn on me soon,” he said.

“I’m just keen to get through the week well and to finish the season with our best performance as a team.”

Round 21 Team of the Week

1. Tristan Sailor – Souths Logan Magpies

Competition leaders Souths Logan made a pre-finals statement on Sunday with a high-scoring victory over the Wynnum Manly, with their first half performance particularly impressive. Fullback Tristan Sailor was one of the standouts for the Magpies. Hugely influential, Sailor not only scored the team's final try of the day in the 55th minute, but he set up another four in the lead up to his own. Dangerous whenever he had the ball in hand, Sailor also recorded four line break assists, two offloads, one line break and one tackle break, earning this week's captaincy honours. Elsewhere, young gun fullback Morea Morea was sensational against the Townsville Blackhawks, scoring one try, setting up another with a double kick and running down speedy winger Robert Derby for a huge try-saver.

2. Jordan Pereira – Souths Logan Magpies

The Brisbane Broncos affiliate has been a threat for Souths Logan all season. That red-hot 2023 form continued on Sunday with Pereira just too hard to handle as he scored two tries and set up another. He also recorded 233 run metres, a stunning 12 tackle breaks and three line breaks.

Why is it that he was never given a shot at first grade footy?

Why is it that he was never given a shot at first grade footy?

One of the great mysteries- if you looked at every NRL player that got a game since 2014 I would say he's better than a lot. Junior Roos 2013- normally that gets you something.

He couldn't have done anymore- 58 games for Raiders in NYC- 35 tries, Fullback of the year in 2013.

Ricky never picked him then Mounties and moved up to Qld- 150 Cup games and no NRL games.

Nothing off-field he's a great bloke. Don't think he even drinks.

Marsden done by PBC 16-4.

Marsden too many mistakes and attack just couldn’t recover.

PBC in another final.
