NEWS Reece Walsh sells his soul to Warriors. No big deal.

Didn’t we re-sign Piakura for big money?
A rookie that hasn’t played first grade yet.
We may have done. But he’s willing to stick around and play cup.

we didn’t offer Walsh the smell of an oily rag, and an empty Mars bar wrapper.

250k is pretty close, particularly for a very highly touted junior who looked a level above in the trial AND we gave that to said unproven forward.

This is what our core group should've been moving forward, fill in the blinks with almost anyone and we'd be a premiership threat for the next 10 years.

Such a shame that our management is so incompetent.
Spoilers... we tried that in 2020 when a whole bunch of kids came through at the same time.

You have to pay for potential nowadays so we'd be paying a fucking fortune for players that haven't proven anything and wouldn't have any money left for experienced players to put around them so they would get pumped every week and then bail.

Walsh - $500k
Herbie Farnworth - $250k
Kotoni Staggs - $600k
Xavier Coates - $450k
Sam Walker - $400k (next year, +$700k in a couple years)
Patrick Carrigan - $350k
Payne Haas - $500k
David Fifita - $800k
Tevita Pangai Jr - $650k

$4,500k on 9 players, but no 6 or 9.

I just had a look.

The Broncos have splashed $1.2 million over three years to keep boom back-rower Brendan Piakura as rival clubs prepared to swoop on the 18-year-old.

So Piakura was a bigger priority than Walsh?
Has anyone seen much of Piakura in the lower grades?
Unless Piakura is the second coming of a Fifta this could go down as one of the biggest stuff-ups in the clubs history.

But one heck of a 1 and 7.

But that's where the club needed to make the correct call and take a punt at some point. I think Walsh looked an obvious talent and was an easy decision given the state of our spine and fullback stocks.

But instead they effectively prioritized Staggs, Dearden and Coates... two centers and a halfback that they didn't bother offering a contract to.

The club has had FOMO for years and try to sign everyone... was Flegler really necessary when we already had Haas (20), Lodge (25), Carrigan (22) and TPJ (24).

Was Ofa necessary in 2019 when we had all those guys on the books and they knew Flegler was coming through the grades.

The club aren't making tough decisions... they're making stupid decisions until they run out of money, and then they start trying to offload the stupid decisions to make more stupid decisions.

Nailed it. And in all that, we still had the chance to get one right in Walsh and we screwed it. I wonder how Donuts felt watching on from the sideline as he watched Walsh leave for absolutely nothing.

I've edited my previous post since, but instead of signing Walsh it would appear they prioritised Staggs, Dearden and Coates.

So they made the decision to try and sign two centers and a halfback that they didn't end up offering a contract to

The real problem seems to be that the Broncos don't seem to have anyone at the club that is really good at identifying talent...or maybe they do, but then they don't have anyone who listens to them.
I mean sure, they hedge their bets on rookies, but it seems like they don't have a lot of confidence in them.
Its strange, because it wasn't that long ago someone clearly predicted that Haas was going to be a force and offered him $500K a year before he even played a game too (and this is for a forward). Maybe it was just Bennett?
Anyway, someone important at the Broncos should be able to make these Haas like predictions early, but it really seems like its the only one that worked out.

Piakura looks very promising but if you have to chose 1 you take the spine player every time.

Regardless of how good Walsh is or turns out to be, I think the club played it right.

we offered a contract befitting of his standing. The **** couldn’t play a handful of games in Qcup and work his way into the team.
He was told he’d play first grade this season. The warriors beat the offer and apparently Kev wouldn’t budge on his original amount.

Joes right. But I can’t stop thinking about Walsh's performance in our Wynnum trial earlier. He was a standout all the talk was about our new up and comer. We were all so happy. Thing is he wanted to go. We should be letting Cobbo have a run as soon as possible. No good trying to hide him with the vultures circling.

Will Walsh stay at the Warriors beyond this contract, particularly when they move back to being based in NZ? With a couple of years under his belt, he'd be an ideal 'marquee' recruitment for the 2nd Brisbane team. I just can't see him staying in NZ past 2023.

I agree. Right or wrong I think he’s probably little chance coming back to the club who didn’t see think he was worth the money.

We offered him a fair contract.

Possibly but that’s why I said right or wrong. In a players mind the warriors had faith in him and rolled out the red carpet, compared to that the broncos who thought it was a risk.
