NEWS Right price to deliver Storm’s Brodie Croft to Broncos

Actually i think more mid range 300 to 500k players is exactly what we need. You put all your money on one player and you can easily end up getting a guy like Bird who is injured for 80% of his contract or a bloke who just doesn't perform such as Barba and Kennedy.

We already have 3 guys in our spine on over 500k each not doing what their price asks. Two of those are spine players the other is Gillette. Bird is on big money and has not played enough to be called a good recruit.

Croft could just as easily become a star up here away from Melb and control freak Smith. Look at the young fullback at the Raiders, a nobody with something to prove is great value. If he doesn't you either have money to look elsewhere or have somebody already to take the shot.

Recruiting is a gamble.

The Canberra spine in general would have looked shit house at the start of the season.
1: a nobody Warriors discard.
6: A meme who was average at FB
7: They were in a worse spot than us
9: Their best player but coming off an ACL.

Possibly , would much prefer Taylor for cheap. But I'm willing to back the club either way.
Croft currently on 350k upgrade to 400-500k

V

Taylor currently on 1million, thinking you can get him to downgrade to 350k?

Dreams

Speaking with too much logic for those forum

Can someone (@McHunt?) post the "MENINGA OPEN TO SWAPPING TAYLOR WITH NRL RIVAL " article? I'm just going to assume the rival is Darius Boyd.

Gold Coast culture chief Mal Meninga is determined to get the best out of Ash Taylor but has revealed he will broker a straight swap with another NRL club if the troubled playmaker wants out of the Titans.

Meninga made it clear his priority is for Taylor to see out his $3 million deal at the Titans, with the Gold Coast continuing to provide professional counselling in the hope of restoring the confidence of their most important playmaker.

However, Meninga says he is open to the prospect of rubber-stamping a release for Taylor if the Titans or the halfback himself decides his best opportunity of a career resurrection rests with an NRL rival.

The Sunday Mail can reveal the Broncos are prepared to issue a lifeline for Taylor to return to Red Hill next season.

But Brisbane would not offer the former Broncos under-20s young gun more than a basic $150,000 contract, beefed-up by a major subsidy from the Titans on his existing $1 million-a-season deal.

That scenario is implausible for the Titans, who see no point jettisoning Taylor if they have to write off more than $700,000 on their salary cap in 2020 as part of an early transfer.

But the possibility of a straight swap is a consideration for Meninga, who says he will entertain other playmaking options under a trade deal if Taylor feels he needs a fresh start to kickstart his teetering NRL career.
“At the end of the day, the ball is in Ash’s court,” Meninga said.

“Personally, I would love to see Ash succeed at the Titans and we’re doing everything possible to get him back to where he needs to be. “But if it’s not working for Ash or for us then I would consider something like a straight swap if another club was interested and it worked out well for all parties.

“As everyone knows, Ash takes up a large portion of our salary cap so it’s in our best interests to ensure he performs accordingly. There’s no point in us just letting Ash go and having a fair amount of money sitting on our salary cap.”

On the verge of a Queensland Origin debut last year, Taylor’s career sensationally careered off the rails this season. The 24-year-old was granted compassionate leave by the club in June after his confidence hit such a low he refused to take a pressure, match-levelling penalty goal in the Titans’ 6-4 loss to the Cowboys.

The 2 players in question re: swap are Glenn and Gillett is what I have heard. Dunno how true that is.

Any thoughts on what might be going on Faithy?

I dont quite get the croft hate. Yes he is not the most experienced half about and there are still areas to work on in his game, but with 40 nrl games, 35+ Q Cup games and having worked under cronk for sometime, we could do much worse. You would also struggle to find a comparable half for 350-370k (which would be the most i would be looking at given the salary cap state).

I also think he was dropped not particularly for poor form but because of papenhuyzens performance and melbournes lack of need for an organising half because they have smith (so can go with 2 running halves).

Dearden is a prospect but he needs some time in the reserves playing against men and learning to be an organising/dominant half (from what i heard, he wasnt the dominant half in the Q Cup games he played this year). In 1.5- 2 years he may be ready

When we look at other dominant half options with nrl experience, they are either not likely too move or too expensive.
Roosters- cronk (retiring), keary (not leaving)
Canberra- sezer (he was my initial thought but i was underwhelmed with his game on friday, his kicking was pretty poor (raiders best kicks were from hodgson). He is also in the team because of sam williams injury). Sam williams (havent seen much of him).
Souths- Reynolds (not moving and too expensive)
Manly- DCE (not moving and too expensive)
Cronulla- townsend (not moving)
Parra- moses (not moving and too expensive)
Tigers- brooks and benji (not moving and retiring next year)
Bulldogs- foran (i am not sure if bulldogs are still looking to move him on, but his injury and off-field personal issues are a concern. I think he would struggle away from sydney.)
Warriors- green (not moving or too expensive)
Penrith - cleary (not moving), maloney (gone)
Cowboys- morgan (not moving and too expensive), clifford (still young, not sure when his contract expires, probably asking too much)
Titans- jacks (less nrl experience, as good as he is going to get and not the potential croft has), roberts (i thought he would have been a good pick up in 2017-18, but dont see the titans letting him go), taylor (think he might be a couple years off returning to form and may not have the maturity to manage the scrutiny of being a bronco 7)
Knights- pearce not moving and too expensive
Dragons- norman and hunt (not moving and too expensive).

We can only do so much in a limited market.

Like I said, if Bellamy wasn't going to reinstate Croft, I couldn't see Melbourne going far. Hughes is not a halfback, and Bellamy has practically three fullbacks in his spine now, it was a dumb coaching decision. Croft may not set the world on fire but he's a genuine halfback and in the red zone, it showed when Melbourne struggled to score a try with three guys who have a first instinct to run the ball.

We should capitalise on Melbourne being dumb and take Croft off their hands, if nothing else when Smith retires this year or next, they are going to really struggle without a genuine half ready to organise and lead the team around.

Make it happen Seibold, sign him up.

If Storm lose Croft on top of losing Walters that only leaves Johns and Hughes really as halves with Munster. Level below that they're very confident with Noah Griffiths who moves to Storm at the end of this season with a four year deal.

What's your thoughts on croft as a player mate ?

I believe Billy Walters signed with the Tigers on a 2 year deal so he's already gone. It's a huge risk to move forward with only Hughes/John. Hughes is an excellent player and I'd love him at fullback for us actually but I don't think he can transition into a natural playmaker. Cooper Johns I know nothing about but maybe Bellamy rates him highly enough that he doesn't think losing Croft is a big risk.

He's 22, he's learned his craft behind two of the best game managers of the last decade and has developed in the most structured and organised team in the comp. He may not be a perfect fit for Melbourne but at his rumoured 300-400k salary we'd be mad to not attempt to sign him. He has exactly the skill set that we don't have on our roster, he's a Brisbane boy, he's worth the gamble.

Any contract you sign is a gamble really. If we gave Offa 500k for 4 years then giving Croft 350k for 2 years is like putting your money in a high interest savings account vs blowing 300k on pokies.

Yeah I know I said they've lost Walters.

Bellemy loves fullbacks, Seibold loves hookers. :p

As long as he falls out of love with Macca I can get behind that.

We can throw Segeyaro at fullback, Turpin at 7, Paix at 9 buy Kurt Baptise for 5/8.
