Payne Haas:

“I’m not looking anywhere else. I’ve gone through some court stuff lately and I’m trying to focus on my footy. I am putting that contract stuff to one side and I want to play the best football I can for my teammates and the Broncos. I’ve got three more years to go on my current contract, so I’m in no rush to extend my deal."
“I am taking it week by week and I want to play the best footy I can for this team. All that contract sort of stuff will sort itself out eventually.”
“When I first came into the NRL, SBW helped me out a lot, especially being a Muslim. Some of the troubles I’ve gone through off the field, Sonny Bill has been there for me. To see him last night, doing what he did, I was pretty nervous before his fight. I couldn’t talk to anyone. I was nervous for Sonny, but to see him win, I was so relieved and I am happy for him. He is one of the best athletes in the world.”
“My main goal is to win a comp for sure. We have a long way to go, we have to take things day by day, but the ultimate goal for me is to win a premiership and make this club great again.”
“Players like myself and Jase Taumalolo, we look forward to these kind of battles. I know Jase will be up for this. Their forward pack dominated the Raiders last week and they will be looking to do the same to us. That makes me more ready for it. It’s what you play for, these kind of battles, so I can’t wait for Sunday afternoon, it will be pretty physical.”

yeah states that he left because he probably wouldn't be in the 17 but is all good to not be in the titans 17 , and just give some guidance to JC. seems like he had an issue with not being ahead of Niu
I got the impression Kevvy had run a line through his name after that monumental fuckup last year. Had Selwyn not shit the bed in the trials, I'm sure he would've filled in for Tesi. Jamayne was last resort because we needed his experience. As soon as Tesi was back firing on three cylinders Jamayne got shunted back off to the glue factory.

Even on the wing, he would've been behind Jordan, and probably David Mead. I reckon Kevvie would've shifted Herbie out and brought Brenko in rather than give him another go.

And I'm not sure I want to become the head of the Niu fan club (my Flegs commitments already take a lot of time) but I dunno, I just have this feeling he is going to arrive with a bang at some point. I could be totally, totally wrong but there is just so much raw ability there.

Isaako:

“There were a couple of blokes ahead of me and I had a conversation with Kevvie which didn‘t really give me too much confidence. The conversations we had, I didn’t get the confidence I was even going to play unless there was an injury or something like that. I thought I worked extremely hard over the pre-season to earn a spot in the team and, look, it wasn’t meant to be in the eyes of the coaching staff there. So I sat down and spoke with my manager and my family and I thought it was a good opportunity to come here to the Titans.”
“I’m extremely disappointed with how it ended. I wanted to finish off on a high and finish my contract there, but it wasn’t meant to be. I thought I had a pretty good pre-season. I ripped in and did everything required of me. As the start of the season unfolded, Tesi dropped back into the team, which is all well and good. In the conversations we had, I didn’t get the confidence I was even going to play unless there was an injury.”
“There were talks with Parramatta. I left it up to my manager. I said ‘I don’t want to hear about it until something is finalised’. I didn’t want to go to Sydney. An opportunity came up here and it was fitting living in Brisbane and not having to make the move. I didn’t want to go to Sydney with a young family and with the contract at the Dolphins for the year after."
“Justin Holbrook said there were spots I could crack and play some good footy over the next seven months so that’s what I want to do. I’ve played 80-odd games for the Broncos and have a bit of experience. I’ll do whatever I can to help Jayden and guide him.”
Walters:
“There’s no issue with Jamayne. He has been a very good player for us but his manager came to us with a release and we decided he is free to go. He is going to the Dolphins next year anyway so I wish him all the best. We have good depth here. I didn’t know where he was going but it wouldn’t have mattered anyway. We left on good terms and I hope Jamayne plays well for the Titans.”

Shit mentality even as he walks out the door.

So mentally weak... the second an obstruction is put in his way he puts the head down and pisses and moans... see ya later.

This kind of attitude is exactly the kind of thing that has held back the team the last few years. I don't wish to scapegoat Isaako as his situation is a bit different (what with joining the Dolphins next year), but it's this 'now, now, now' type of shit. No one wants to put in the hard yards.

Yeah, you may have worked hard in the off-season, but you need to be prepared to stick it out a little longer and not give up at the first hurdle. The minute things have gone wrong over the last few years, too many of these blokes have just wanted to go and hide, or just plain old give up and not put in the work to rectify the issues.

That kind of approach manifests itself in other negative ways in terms of the culture at the club, and it seems to me that Big Dick Dave and Benny Ikin are sorting the wheat from the chaff in this respect.
For so long, people ate up the shit about Milford needing this, Milford needing that. I even believed it myself for far too long.

What Milford really needed was to stop making excuses and pull his fucking weight. It was going on whilst Bennett was at the club too, it’s just he was far better than Seibold at getting the players up on game day. It really did plaster over the cracks.

When someone of Milford’s standing at the club gets away with being a shit trainer, putting in garbage efforts and even worse overall performances, all the while having others peddle the excuses for him, is it any wonder so many others got on the ‘it’s always someone else’s fault’ bandwagon.

Well that seems to have come to a screeching halt since the new admin have arrived. From the outside looking in, it appears they’re doing a fantastic job, which has allowed Walters to get a strong grip of the squad and sharpen them up.

This has been ramped up with the arrival of Reynolds, Capewell and to a lesser extent James and Lee. They’ve all been around long enough, and been recently successful (expect James) that they won’t stand for that shit. And the big one - complacency is not an issue for them. You can see the impact they’re having already.

I have absolutely no doubt there are a handful of players that were at the club over the last few years that have done nothing but accelerate and perpetuate the toxic culture that led us to where we were, right up until about round 18 last year, when the penny finally dropped.

Billy Walters wants to stay a Bronco:

“It’s been the best pre-season I’ve done in any NRL system. I’ve got Kevvie on my side knowing I can bring a lot to the team and showcase what I’ve got to the NRL. For me it’s been really good because I know he backs me and has a lot of confidence in me and what I can do. It’s made me more confident in my game."
"I know I don’t have to overplay my hand or try to be the best player on the field to impress the coach. I know if I do my role really well he will pick me. He just wants everyone to be the best they can be and that will take us to where we want to go.”

Ben Ikin says he's "not without talent:"

“We wanted Billy to find his feet inside the team, which means the season will play out a little longer for him. But at some point, we will start the conversation with Billy about what the next phase of his career looks like. Billy has been very solid in our first two games. He was great at five-eighth in that win over the Rabbitohs and then he added a stack of value coming off the bench to play dummy-half against the Bulldogs."

“Billy is a great young guy, he can clearly play and he has fitted into the Broncos system. They are a really close group and you can tell from the first two performances they are closely connected and they play for each other. Billy has been an important part of our start to the season. It will come up on us pretty quick. We have to have discussions with some guys fairly quickly so I dare say we will start talks sooner rather than later.”
“When he got here I was looking forward to seeing what he had under the bonnet in his first pre-season here and I have been impressed. He works hard, he wants to learn, he has great humility about the way he goes about his work. He doesn’t lack confidence. He knows what he wants and he is prepared to go after it."
"Billy has always been competitive and he is not without talent. He is one of those guys who just needed to find an opportunity. Now that he is at a club where his father is the head coach, Kevin will want to give him every chance to contend for spots and he won’t want to let his father down. The ingredients could deliver a good outcome for Billy.”

I think Skip Walters has shown during his time on the field that he's no elite world beater, but nevertheless what he does bring is a relatively mistake free option at 14. His service form dummy half and his occasional runs form there are more than acceptable. As a replacement for either Turpin, Paix or Mozer in the last 10 -15 minutes of each half or the last 20 in a game he's good value.

I think also, the more game time he gets the more his game will develop. He looks like a typical Wlaters hooker though when he is in there. I'm tipping him to cross the line this weekend.

I genuinely would not be surprised if Billy was our first choice hooker in 2023.
I don't see Turpin being re-signed at the club and I think he will end up at the Dolphins.
I'm not sure what that means for Paix because I know the club thinks highly of him but he has just been unlucky not to be able to show us exactly what he has in NRL although that could come this year if we starting losing a few games and Turpin gets dropped.
I do like Billy at 14, but I think he may push hard for a starting 13 spot.

I do think a 1-2 punch of Walters-Paix or Paix-Walters offers so much more than a 1-2 punch of Turpin and whoever. All of this is really just a stop gap in the hope that Mozer comes on as well as everyone hopes as he is earmarked as the long term option.

A cheap, solid, mature NRL-level utility for a pack of chips and can of coke? Re-sign him as soon as he says yes.
And also he's not keen to leave Brisbane... it's basically us with his dad, Wayne at the Dolphins or down the M1 to the titans

I think Billy could become one of the better specialist utilities in the game.

I'd certainly be offering him a new 2 year contract (not on big money) to be that utility. Paix of course being first choice until we know if Mozer will develop into the hooker the "experts" believe and the fans hope he will become

According to Travis Meyn, we have made the "remarkable" decision to not enter the player market for next year, instead backing our development and pathways programs to break our premiership drought and create sustained success

Ben Ikin says:

“I would say to you right now – ideally, we won’t have to go to market at all. That is the goal,”

“Between the top 30 and development list, we’ve got a core group of players here that we can build our future around. We would only want to go to market in an extraordinary situation.”

“We want to invest in the guys we’ve got, who we think are very capable and have got stacks of improvement in front of them,” Ikin said.

“We’ve had a stack of churn through staff in key roles and a stack of churn in the roster. That churn, no matter how well you try and manage it, creates instability and uncertainty which undermines performance.

“We are trying to move away from that.”

This is good for two reasons: 1. It gives backing to the team and that is good for morale, 2. Any time we get linked to someone, although we may be after them, we can refer to these comments and take ourselves out of the usual Broncs linked with everyone story and inevitable cannot believe they missed out, etc.

Love it.

Old school.

When I was growing up, we hardly ever made signings from other clubs. If we did, they weren't exactly out and out stars, either.

and 3 ... it gets us closer to restoring the old Broncos DNA.

typically we have been a development club that's when we've been at our best. going to the market has always been a last resort. unfortunately, thanks to Seibold, we arrived at that last resort.

and even though we needed to go to the market for this season, i like that ours was a surgical strike targeting the players we needed, rather than the Bulldogs cluster bomb approach
