According to Travis Meyn, we have made the "remarkable" decision to not enter the player market for next year, instead backing our development and pathways programs to break our premiership drought and create sustained success

Ben Ikin says:

“I would say to you right now – ideally, we won’t have to go to market at all. That is the goal,”

“Between the top 30 and development list, we’ve got a core group of players here that we can build our future around. We would only want to go to market in an extraordinary situation.”

“We want to invest in the guys we’ve got, who we think are very capable and have got stacks of improvement in front of them,” Ikin said.

“We’ve had a stack of churn through staff in key roles and a stack of churn in the roster. That churn, no matter how well you try and manage it, creates instability and uncertainty which undermines performance.

“We are trying to move away from that.”
I like this, I think the players we have currently in the top 30 and players in the works can deliver a premiership or get close too.
It's building the DNA of the club back up to what it was. You look at when we were successful it was with guys who debuted here and were Broncos through and through guys who love the club with a sprinkling of people from the outside to fill the puzzle what Reynolds, Capewell and James are now (Capewell and James were Broncos fans growing up).
It's what Penrith have done and look how well they are going now.

James was a Raiders fan but your point still stands.

He's also got one in a raiders jersey aswell.. but I'm going to take it as he was on the fence with the two.

Love it.

Old school.

When I was growing up, we hardly ever made signings from other clubs. If we did, they weren't exactly out and out stars, either.
We usually bought quality to perform a certain job. I remember Mick Devere coming here, guys like Priddis etc.

Not the worst idea. If I look through the current squad there no players remaining that I think need to be immediately replaced which is good. Fullback is still the biggest issue imo and wouldn’t be against an external signing but Cobbo is likely the long term answer.

Hooker won’t too flash either but the progression of Turpin to Paix to Mozer probably has that sorted long term too

and 3 ... it gets us closer to restoring the old Broncos DNA.

typically we have been a development club that's when we've been at our best. going to the market has always been a last resort. unfortunately, thanks to Seibold, we arrived at that last resort.

and even though we needed to go to the market for this season, i like that ours was a surgical strike targeting the players we needed, rather than the Bulldogs cluster bomb approach
I wouldn't necessarily say it was all Seibold that made the decisions that were made... I can only recall from the interviews when he was first signed that EVERYTHING was about all the young talent we had coming through... "we've got a special group of players coming through"

I feel like it was more the football department at the time and they were having serious FOMO about every player they identified... They wanted to keep them all and in doing so had to get rid of everyone in the top 30 that had peaked (McGuire, Macca, Kodi, Roberts, etc.).

They were clearing cap space left, right and centre to try and retain all the young guys coming through and we were left with a massive leadership void... to me that's what really dropped us to our lowest point.

I don't necessarily think that Moose, Macca, Knik, etc. were all outstanding leadership material, but the abrupt nature that they were all tapped on the shoulder and moved on would've created a seriously toxic environment.

Seibold was new to the club and didn't really have much idea about what players to keep or who was coming through... but I think his own hubris had him thinking that he could take a squad of U20's through to the top 4 and premiership glory so he went along with the culling of senior players and giving the cap to young guys like Dearden, etc.

That was the dream that management sold him when they interviewed him and he gleefully accepted it:
"We have a group of young guys coming through. Can you make them into a premiership force?"
"Yes... I'll direct you to my first powerpoint slide..."
"Wait... I've seen enough... I've only got one more question... do you have a pen for this 5yr contract??"

Also Ikin "So that's it you won't be seeing any more churn.....eh except for Jarmayne...but he doesn't really count as he checked out quite some time ago... Oh and maybe Payne as the deep south are picking away at him almost every day. He strangely asked me about the merits of online share portfolios yesterday!"

No surprise we aren't looking to recruit from the outside, although I am sure people on here want us to sign every decent hooker/fullback under the sun, that's not reality.

Hooker is probably a position where we would benefit from signing a player who could give us a couple of good year. Mozer isnt ready. Paix hasnt done anything yet either and Turpin isnt really good enough or improving. Billy is a 14 at best.

Fullback is where i think we need to recruit. Tesi isnt the answer and Farnworth might do the job, but we just dont know. If i was going to target one player, it would 100% be a fullback.

Check out Mr Australia on the far right. Needs a stubby in a cooler:

"extraordinary situation" i.e. Walsh or Ponga

Who would you sign then?

Keeping in mind we are in no position to fork out for a big name player.

I dont think thats neccercarily true, but we aren't going to be looking at 750k plus players thats for sure. Its going to be players who have probably fallen out of favour at other clubs. The 2 obvious choices for me would be Drinkwater ( if we can convince him to come as a 1 ) or Klokstad from Canberra who i think will lose his spot to Savage when he is fit.

The other players i can think of are probably a bit of a wild card option. See if we can do some kind of deal to bring Walsh back, or a player i like is Hayze Perham at Parra. Then i guess we are going back into the territory with Perham of another young player who hasnt done a lot.

My real out there player and the one i would go for would be Will Pryce from Huddersfield. I think he is going to be a superstar and he has some serious skills. I'll do an @upthebroncs and give you a youtube clip so you can get a feel for the type of player he is.

3 things from that video.

1. From those highlights, and the fact he wears number 32, it is difficult to tell if he is playing centre, six or a roving utility, like a second fullback.

2. He looks like a bit of a wanker, especially his carry on after tries. Don’t want that shit at the club.

3. The defence in Super League is atrocious.

I dont think super League defence is that bad tbh, its just the game has a lot less wrestle and slowing down. Its just the way they play, its a lot more open than we are used to seeing.

Its just a squad number. They dont play in 1 to 17 like here. He's playing fullback now but he was a bit all over the place in some of those. Probably a second roving fullback is a good description for him at the time. I'd say he will probably move to 6 at some point. He can kick, pass, beat players, and he was 18 iirc in that compilation. He is going to be a top player. I dont see a single young player at the Broncos who has the skillset he does in the same kind of position.

He doesnt really carry on any worse than most players over here really but he does have a bit of arrogance about him. He's not in the Fatrell class though. Its not a bad thing as long as he keeps things in check.

Mind you, he wont be playing much footy for the next 10 weeks. He did a pretty clumsy tackle that could have seriously injured another player. Got it badly wrong.
