POST GAME Round 1 - Storm vs Broncos

The question then is why can't we.? Do we sign dumbcunts who can't learn a system?.
Bellamys' structures are simple enough. We were supposed to be training at 30% above game speed for months, we had the ball in hand at training months earlier than normal and our style didn't change from last year so we really don't have an excuse.
No doubt we had a dig and kept aiming up, let's hope the improvement comes quickly.

Was good to see Milford getting angry last night when Bird kept running backwards like a dickhead. Hopefully he fires up, and starts really barking orders. I think if he can take more control over what is happening on the field, and pulling the idiots into line when they do dumb shit, we'll be a better team instantly.

Because their football is predicated on manipulating the neck in just about every tackle to slow other teams down. The whole game we're slogging into a set defense coming off their 10m while they get fast play the balls and run against a defence which is either retreating or stationary. Makes it look a lot easier and all a forward needs to do is crush, wrestle then run at backwards moving guys.

Well we also got towelled up so there’s that. Would have been positive had we played well, so there’s also that.

Seibold didn’t impress me with how he handled himself last year and he did look rattled last night.

I know we’re all used to the resting face of Wayne Bennett but how did seibold look rattled? They only cut to him for like a minute and most of the time he was giving orders down the phone.

Half the the time he looked like he had a wry smile on his face

Because @broncsgoat has an agenda.

Could have been my Bintang induced haze but he looked like the ‘I don’t know what I’m doing’ dog meme every time I saw him

Not such a bad performance. Enough there to be optimistic about. Forwards were really good for parts but as yet, can't keep up the intensity for long (enough) periods. Gillet tried hard but looks to me that being a middle forward isn't his game. He was often manhandled by their middle forwards.

Backs were okay. Bird was ok except for a few mistakes early on. I watch him play and think he would make a good #13. In the centers he merely runs hard and makes good metres. Isaako needs a rocket! No doubt talented but goes missing.

Oats may well be our most valuable player.

As others have pointed out, our problem is #9, 7, 6, and 1. Boyd talked the talk in the off season so well he had me fooled. But no, based on last night and last season, he is no longer an NRL standard fullback. That Macca is considered QLDs best (available) #9 is scary. He is a tackling machine but not much else. Milford has been going backward for some years now. On last night's performance, his ball playing hasn't improved but his running game regressed. Nikorima is Nikorima. We know what he brings to the table. Does some good things but being an organizing half isn't his game and that given he is partnered with a 5/8 whose game isn't organizing, it magnifies both their deficiencies.

Main worry for me is the time Gillet, Boyd, Macca, Milford and Bird are on the books for. I wonder how soon Bennett knew he was on the outer. Can't believe the length of time these guys are signed for. Well, Milford and Bird have just been let-downs but the others should be on the books this year and the club have an option on next year at most!

Looked to me like he kind of knew that performance was going to happen.
He didnt look out of his depth at all IMO.
Early days folks...keep calm.

News flash, milf was our best player last year and is only one game back from surgery.

I agree on both points, but at least they both bust their guts every time they step on the field.

I think one of our biggest problems is our captain is the complete opposite. His attitude absolutely stinks. He shows no desperation and no ticker.

McCullough, as slow as he is, gave chase all the way on Scott even though he knew he was never going to get him. Boyd gave up.

Boyd gave up on Kaufusi, Kaufusi dropped the ball anyway.
Boyd gave up on another of their try scorers, even when he was close enough to put pressure on him if he wanted to.
I believe Boyd wanted nothing to do with tackling Bromwich, otherwise I just don’t understand how he falls for a dummy and gets stepped when all the support players were comfortably covered.
There is a break and Oates, the opposite winger, is there in support but Boyd, the fullback, is no where to be seen.

It’s just terrible leadership, is toxic to team culture and stunts the development and success of such a young and impressionable squad.

It’s no surprise the teams that have strong squads and sustained success have strong leaders providing the kids with someone to look up to and aspire to emulate. We simply don’t have that.

I don't think anyone is going to deny that Macca has a huge heart. He just lacks the vision and the skill.

Half the players in the competition are "one game back from surgery" and if he was one of our best last year, that explains why it was a mediocre year at best.

No they’re not, and he actually won our player of the year award.

WOW after sleeping off all the anger here’s my two cents.

Whilst it’s easy to focus on our negatives, lets take a look at what we were up against

1/ Storm team who have continuity with
- the same coach,
- the same systems,
- immortal players (current and retired, yet still there)
- and a very successful winning culture.

2/ We had a late preseason, hampered by DRAMA DRAMA & more DRAMA

3/ Key players returning from injuries, with little to no preseason

With the exception of the 7 & 9 (& to a lesser extent 1), we’ve got to give it a few more rounds before we start calling for heads to roll
