Round 10 - Broncos vs Titans - Post Match Discussion

Oh yeah, big ups to my main man Dale straight outta Compton.

This kid is a superstar in the making. No joke.

What a champ.

Boy the first three pages of this thread were tough going, thanks so much to those who can be more objective in their summaries.

1. Barba - everyone gives it to the poor guy, he was fantastic tonight, he was supporting everything and had some very nice touches.
2. Vidot - Absolute but of the season and may well be a smokey for origin if Tate or Boyd go down.
3. Reed - Look he wasn't horrible but he wasn't bad either.
4. Hodges - Still struggling at times but still classy.
5. Copley - Two tries and completely quality, has a fantastic right foot step watching live just before he hits a line.
6. Hoffman - It's all been said.
7. Hunt - An inconsistent game, but quality touches as well.
8. McGuire - He may have won himself an origin jersey.
9. McCullough - He was off but you can forgive that after the start to the season he's had.
10. Wallace - Also inconsistent and needs to learn to run hard and straight, he ran sideways a lot.
11. Glenn - He was very good and ran nice lines.
12. Parker - Seemed to have a long break but solid overall.
13. Gillett - Was excellent in patches, ok in others, typical Gillett.

Oates - He is absolute quality, loved seeing him at centre late in the game.
Lowrie - Where did this come from? Ash Harrisonesque.
Hala - I really liked his game tonight, ran with intensity each time, keeps improving.
Stagg - Good to see him back and he actually took a lot of the hard yards late in the game. Solid.

I'll take the win but as a few other people have said, I'm not all that happy about it. We should have put 40 on the Tits after Sezer went off. The fact that we didn't isn't a wrap on the Titans defence. We were just bad and once again, it all comes down to shit coaching and Hoffman in the 6. Who would've thought.

1. Barba - There were times when he was ragdolled by the Tits but he had a class game. Nobody can say he isn't giving his all because take him out of the side and we probably lose tonight.
2. Vidot - I don't really blame him for those poor defensive reads, because who wouldn't be concerned in his position considering who is on his inside. Had a great second half and has indeed been buy of the season.
3. Reed - Honestly, we really wouldn't notice his absence if he was dropped, and that pretty much says it all.
4. Hodges - Well what can you say. It is performances like the one he had tonight that set the superstars apart from all the rest.
5. Copley - This kid is going places. I would have him in my side over the Morris twins any day of the week.
6. Hoffman - Need I say anything, really? We would be better off dumping the 6 altogether.
7. Hunt - Struggled here and there but you can see he is finding his feet being the only real half we have in the side.
8. McGuire - Really solid performance. I dunno if he'll play Origin this year outside of injury coverage, but you can't say he wouldn't do it justice.
9. McCullough - Probably one of his poorer games this year but nothing terrible.
10. Wallace - Still not sure about him, if I'm honest. I would have Oates take his starting spot next week.
11. Glenn - The best game he's had this year. Got denied a try by the dumb as dogshit obstruction rule.
12. Parker - A few solid hitups here and there but otherwise a pretty quiet game. Still sucks shit at goal kicking.
13. Gillett - Typical Katy Perry performance from the form second rower in the comp.

Oates - I've said it before and I'll say it again: this guy is a player with a future. Give him a starting spot.
Lowrie - Best game he's had this year which really isn't saying much. I would still prefer Granville on the bench.
Hala - A couple of solid hitups plus a stupid penalty. Nothing to write home about.
Stagg - Definition of the word "average". Nothing terrible by any means but nothing great either.

I must be the only one who didn't think Barba was particularly good.

He was never going to win games on his own.

A win is a win and I would take 2 competition points any day

Was good to get the win although it was against an injury raved Titans outfit and we could've easily won by a lot more. Hoffman is letting the team down by not using his men and hogging the ball, when I think about I wouldn't mind Barba getting a shot in the halves. He would go a lot better than Hoffman.

Gillett was a good choice for MOM I thought he was outstanding

Hoffman, Hoffman, Hoffman. I could live with the dummy-but-run if it meant that he was drawing in defenders, so that later in the game they could run the same play but actually pass it to his outside man in space. It just never happened. When he did pass it, it was a quick shovel along, with the defence at least a metre or two away and not pressuring him. So I'm now of the opinion that he is just not comfortable passing in traffic. He'd rather run and go for a quick PTB than risk a turnover. The one time he did pass it in traffic was his first carry and it just sort of dribbled out of his hands and was called a knock on. The strange thing is, he threw those wonderful face balls early in the year that led to trys, so he can do it. Either he ***** it up at training and Hook tells him to play safe, or they just don't fucking practise it.

If I were Hoffman, and I was so determined to play in a spine position, I'd be staying after training, standing up all the tackle bags in a staggered formation, and trying to pass cleanly between them while hitting one at pace. Just practise the motions of passing while anticipating the impact. It really is just a confidence / familiarity thing, but if he doesn't improve it's a wasted effort. Hodges to 5/8, Copley centre, Vidot right wing (his better side) and Hoffman can take his own medicine and be pissed off whenever Reed hogs the ball as he catches a cold on the left wing.

For the first time ever, I think Hodges is not having much impact in the centres, the team needs to work to his (current) strengths and that's getting the ball as third or fourth man in, drawing the defence and throwing perfect face passes.

It's clear that with Griffin as coach and thus, Hoggman at 5/8, we're never going to excel and play exciting footy.

Yes, the Tits were missing players, but so were we. In fact, until Sezer went off, we were practically on equal terms, as they were missing Bird, Harrison and Kelly, while we were missing Hannant, Thaiday and had Hoffman at 5/8.

They played the football that has been getting them results so far, albeit I agree they are certainly over-achieving and probably won't finish in the top 8, now that their run with lucky tries ran dry. Regardless, their wins have been reliant on defense and grind, and I'm honestly not so sure they would've been much better without their injuries. In fact, you only need to remember the game in Robina for that purpose.

We can all argue that any team would've beaten them, blah blah, but fact is you can only play what's in front of you, and plenty of teams have broken their teeth on the Tits resolve this season. Our game was really of two halves, and within the limitations we have (hoggman, one out footy), we did a good job of totally dominating possession and field position to wear them out in that second half. Hodgo's brilliance and Hunt's improving kicking game finished them off.

Was it pretty? Not by a long shot, but it got us the points.

In individual terms, I feel that Hodgo probably should've got the MOTM award, but I don't think Gillett was undeserving. He was certainly very good tonight, as opposed to last week, and made sure Taylor had zero impact for the Titans.
Vidot was a beast as always and how much longer until Copley gets the nod at centre over Reed? I know the latter wasn't even too bad tonight, but FMD, it just feels like there's really no one there...
Hunt made up for a poor first half, as did Macca. Barba was a busy bee and looks to be getting back his elusiveness. It's only a matter of time until he breaks through the line without anyone hanging to him by a thread...
In the forwards, Glenn was ok but wasn't involved enough, while Moose and Cozza just kept putting us on the front foot.
Besides the people mentioned, credit to Lowrie for his game. He made a big difference tightening up the ruck, where we've been soft.

Oates was today's Griffin brainfart. 19 minutes played no mistakes, good strong runs and... off for the rest of the game. Except Hodgo's twinge forced Hook's hand. I'm really just lost for words at his fucking ineptitude!

Hodges had more impact than Hoffman all season during his one-game stint. I really can't see the harm in a backline of:

1. Ben Barba
2. Daniel Vidot
3. Jack Reed
4. Josh Hoffman
5. Dale Copley
6. Justin Hodges
7. Ben Hunt

Follow your plan, Hoffman cracks the shits, leaves the club, Oates into the right centre, done. Everyone is happy.

Oates was a little slow defensively when he played at centre for the Broncos.

Could be a bit of a problem when going up against a speedy centre..

Hoffman is a gun winger but not much of a centre. He's best at touchline finishing, kick returns and not having teammates outside him screaming for the ball. Swap him and Copley though and baby you got a stew going.

Hoffman has to go. Centre or Wing. Every time we shift the ball and we have an overlap or there is someone running a hole he hogs it and runs the other way. It's painful to watch him bomb try after try. Is Griffin not watching the same game we are week after week?

I'll take that sloppy win, after playing so well on several occasions and losing it in the last 10. Two much needed competition points.

What a shit sandwich of a game to endure. I can't say it was enjoyable at all to watch. Short of Mac, Gillette and Hodges there was little to praise at all. Hunt's first 60 was shocking. Hoffman was Hoffman and even standbys like Parker and Moose were pretty average at best. There is no game plan what so ever and Coach Sloth must be held accountable. A good side would of put 50 points up against the poor injured Titans last night. It is really a bummer that that is three straight weeks of sub par football and that is despite the win.

I am not a moper but, wow this side needs so new direction from the top. You can't say that we don't have the troops either. It is just a really poorly coach side. Not sure we were done any favors because with our occasional lackluster wins, it buys Sloth a bit more time unfortunately.

Two major positives from the game,

- we won first and foremost
- we shut them out in the second half

baby steps!!!
