Round 12 - Broncos vs. Manly - Post-Match Discussion

Haven't watched the game yet, but am very proud of the boys for belting the Manlymob.

Hopefully this performance has increased the confidence levels of Barba and we can see him power on for the rest of the year.

Hoffman passed and kicked, ran pretty well I thought and defended ok. Maybe just maybe, his game isn't going to screw our game plan as much as I was thinking.

The point is, if this side is going anywhere, Hoffman needs either to contribute more, which he looks like he is trying to do, or stuff up less which also looks on the cards judging by yesterday's performance.

Barba, and the forward's passing game is the key. We played an expansive game much like Manly does. Keep that up, including the defensive effort, and we will make the top 4.

For mine, Thaiday made a big difference. We need him. He passed a lot, ran hard and I thought defended well. He seems to exert a certain presence which motivates the forwards when he is switched on

A bit off topic but - no way QLD will go into do-or-die, 9 years on the line clash by blooding a rookie half back.

It'll be a combination of Jake Friend, Cam Smith and Thurston and probably Milford on the bench.

So to save blooding a rookie have back we are moving the games best ever hooker into the halves, blooding a rookie at hooker and blooding a teenager off the bench that has yet to play a full season in the nrl... Ok.

If that is what they are going to do, well, um. 8 series in a row will be hard to beat

What an awesome result! The Broncs looked on a mission.

I'll need to watch it again, was a bit distracted - took my 15 month old son for the first time yesterday, very proud dad. He handled it well, loved the fireworks and the big stadium and buck the horse, eating hot chips and yelling out at the Manly bench (good work son). Watched the game in bits and entertained the crowd around us.

The cheering was ok - the "live" cheering usually builds to a crescendo, so not much of a shock - but the video ref decisions, like Maranta's first try, when the green signal came up and the crowd erupted, he jumped a bit.

White, Smith - Brisbane needs more Sunday afternoon footy, even if it's out of towners.

SOO 2 is going to be absolute slog/trench warfare. Friend coming into 9 is less of an ask than Hunt into 7.

Mal is going to have to make a difficult selection call for the first time in 9 years.

Back on point I guess... Where did that performance come from.

We came out swinging and kept rolling from there.

There were moments were Manly could have pierced our confidence and run away with it - Foran in particular was one tackle break away from a try on about 3 occasions.

Hunt's kicking game was superb, especially in the second half. We sit just near that right hand corner, and Hunt just plugged it down their pin point away from Stewart finding the grass all afternoon.

I thoughtGlenn had another big game. He's a bit of a quiet achiever amongst all the SOO stars. How good was Hannant? Where's that aggression been all year? Clearly wants back in the SOO side.

Barba looked purposeful in his kick returns, even dangerous. I thought on Maranta's try he could have had a go at the line himself and scored - that's the difference between him (class) and Hoffman.

Copely showing up the old bull Matai (admittedly once the game was well over) with the big inside right foot step twice late in the game was a highlight. He kept him covered all day as well. Ditto for Reed on Lyon.

Going to the air to Vidot, finally. Reaped immediate rewards. I think it was an intentional game plan shift away from the right side given Hodges' absence.

Hit the nail on the head there, rnabokov.

Thaiday's presence was immense. Even during the warmup he was getting the forwards fired up and you could see the effect it had. I think it took a lot of pressure off Parker too, which in turn bettered Parker's game.

I watched the replay when I got home last night.

1. Barba - Did some really good things. He's starting to break free a bit the more confidence he gets. The cross field kick was perfect, his footwork at the line is coming along and his backline chime ins are starting to work. He finally looks to be free of his injury too, which you can see is helping with his speed. One little cool thing I noticed yesterday, it was like the 4th tackle and Maranta had dropped back for the 5th tackle kick. He was deep and on the sideline. Barba called to him, "Lachy, come in" and pointed for Maranta to come infield about 15 meters and move up. The ball was kicked straight to Maranta where Barba told him to go and he caught it on the full and made about 15 meters on the kick return. Just great game reading from Barba and is a really good sign.

2. Vidot - Absolute monster and easily our best buy since Folau. He was often about 10 meters from where I was sitting at the game and dead set, he has thighs like a cyclist. Biggest legs in league? He was great and was getting plenty of encouragement from my side of the stands. The fans love him, and rightly so. Should've had a try and worked well with Reed to shut down Lyon all game.

3. Reed - Don't know what happened to Reed, but he seemed like his old self in that game. Maybe it's a confidence thing for Jack? The early try might have helped. He was great. Perfect defense on Lyon and good positional play in attack. Him and Vidot even tried a short side play, even though they're easily the slowest outside backs in the comp, lol.

4. Copley - I was ready to give it to Copley in the first half. He was noticeably limping in the first half too. Some of those handling errors were NYC quality. To his credit he came out in the second half like a different player. His right foot step remind you of anyone? *cough* Hodges *cough*. He's gonna be a great replacement for Hodges.

5 (14). Maranta - Played a good game without being outstanding. Safe again and took some hard meters when the team needed them. Showed good pace at the end of the game to put 10 meters on Gillett in 50 meters.

6. Hoffman - Still a weak link unfortunately. Had a decent game, but seemed to be troubled by cramp, or an injury of some sort. Had a nice kick for Reed, but blew a couple overlaps on the left and was largely ineffective with his running game. His defense was solid though.

7. Hunt - Fantastic game. Maybe not his best of the season, but he's getting help from guys like Barba, Gillett, Parker, Hannant and Moose. His kicking game was very good - only one kick went straight to Stewart, the rest were quality. His pass for Reed was the mark of the player he is for mine. Like Gould said in commentary, the vision to see the Winger had compressed in and the Centre was lining up Barba, then to put the ball on the outside shoulder of Reed was just pure class and Lockyer'eske.

8. McGuire - Huge game. Ran for almost 150m and made 25 tackles. This guy screams Origin player to me. Relentless work rate, hits hard in defense and runs all day. Him and Parker were our best forwards for mine.

9. McCullough - Solid game from Macca. Nothing flashy, but provided good service and put in a couple nice little kicks.

10. Parker - Corey was fantastic. He really put the team on his back at times and led the way forward. 130 meters and 3 offloads tells the story.

11. Glenn - Glenn toiled hard and made some good meters through the middle when we needed them. He still gets in the way a bit down that left side though.

12. Thaiday - Inspirational. We have missed him sorely. He provides the mongrel to the pack that we've been missing. 100 meters and 20 tackles is a great work rate for a guy who's been out for like 6 weeks.

13. Gillett - Hot and cold really for Gillo. The brain fart defensive effort on Foran close to the line, the running back to the centre of the field plays when we have numbers out side, but then the 95m solo effort at the end of the game.

15. Lowrie - Gotta say, Todd had a good game. He keeps our middle third reasonably tight with his tackling and even offers some hard meters.

16. Oates - Quiet night for Oates. Don't know if you guys saw it or not, but he actually got knocked out in a tackle, but was still standing and staggered back into the defensive line. He looked shot after that. Really struggled to find his head and looked gassed big time.

17. Hannant - Big game from Benny. 100 meters, 25 tackles and set up a try. He's proving a lot of us wrong around here. Providing some real impact for us off the bench when he gives Parker a rest.

18. Wallace - Didn't get too much opportunity, but seems like a kid who likes to rip in.

I just feel we played really well as a team. We were not perfect by any means - still some poor options on the 5th tackle and that clanger of a kick from Hoffman was pretty funny. We have all the ingredients there, we just need to turn up with that same intensity every game.

I said it when I was watching them warming up. There was something about the way they were ripping into each other in their drills.

Our right side defense is still suspect for mine. We need to work on that big time.

Other than that, really pleased with a great win.

Copley is making an art out of stepping back across the sliding defence. Also intersting to hear Gould say he sees him as a future back rower.

I also saw the "Guess what? Manly hates you too" sign got a run yesterday. This is in the Grand Final for worst banners ever with the "GST Great St George Team" one. They were amusing the first couple of times they were out but come on - get some new material.

As a fan of Reed I was happy to see him have a great game. I hope he can keep it up, his attitude is awesome and is the kind of player that makes me love watching this team.

Yeah saw a chick at the game yesterday with that on a shirt. She was a stunner too... still didn't make up for the shirt and being a manly supporter

I was all for Reed and Glenn to be dropped for poor form, but they both had a better games last night. Hunt was fantastic, Hoffman gives us nothing. Darren Played well for Norths give him a run in the 6.

i was sat behind the posts and was watching barba pretty closely for alot of the game. he is really involved off the ball in both attack and defense. organising defenders, setting up players in attack, etc, etc. good signs

I watched McCullough closely. Pretty much every pass was off the ground from dummy half and they were good passes too. Along with Hunt he has really picked up his game this season. Also, thought Glenn looked good as replacement dummy half when Macca went off.

So glad I made it to this game (other than the sun blinding me for the first 15). Great performance all around.

3. Hunt
2. Vidot
1. Hannant

To be honest I'm still all numb after yesterdays effort, I kind of feel like it is all just a dream and that I'm going to wake up soon.

It was all just too much for me and I've been unable to conjure up any sort of post. :faint2:

Its just so strange to win a match convincingly for a change and not the usual nail biting stuff trying to hang on at death........and against Manly of all teams. Geeeeeee I hate Manly.

:hail: Praise to the almighty griffinball, we are truely not worthy........mind you yesterday looked a lot less griffinball-esque than I've become accustomed too.
