Round 12 - Broncos vs Manly - Pre-Match Discussion

Yeah, he also needs people to pass him the ball to score tries...

Yeah, exactly this.

To say he has a 50% strike rate because in 10 rounds he has been given 4 opportunities and bombed 2 is a ridiculous use of a percent. Yes you're technically right but it's such a small sample it just completely distorts the stats. Basically you would be much happier to have a winger that when presented with 100 opportunities bombs 40 of them because he has a 60% strike rate and is clearly superior than Vidot.

i would be much happier to have a competent 6 and a centre inside him with a bit of footwork speed and ball skills too.

Speaking of which, watching Jack Wighton on the weekend made me think how amazing it would be to have Oates or Copley in the centres over Reed permanently.

Id rather a winger who scores when he is given the oppurtunity and only makes 100m a game then a winger who drops the ball 50% of the time but makes 150m+ a game.

Like I said before. A wingers first job is to score tries. He hasnt done that well this year and needs to improve. If he imrpoves and starts scoring tries like Hoffman did last year then he will be one of the best wingers in the comp.

Haha did you quote yourself?

HOLD ON... Let me guess this straight...

You are advocating that you prefer a winger who is better at finishing but doesn't make as many metres... and you propose Lachlan Maranta!!??

Regardless of how many tries Vidot has bombed for us I can count them on one hand. I need to take my socks off to count how many **** ups Lachlan has had in attack. He's actually improving as a player but Maranta is inferior to Vidot in every facet of the game except for bomb defusal and kick defence.

Pretty much the entire forum has been calling for Reed to be dropped since round 4.

If I'm to be realistic, the Broncos will do well to finish within 12 points of Manly.

yeah at the moment maranta just looks good because he is catching the bombs, which barba and vidot have been suspect under. i think at least 2 of our back 3 should be rock solid under the high ball, but vidot does so much work back there so i think the most balanced back 3 at the moment would probably be hoffman at fullback with vidot and maranta on the wings, copley to centre with hodges, barba to 6 and reed demoted to orange peeler. milford looks very comfortable under the high ball and offers a bit more on kick returns then barba, so i would likely have him as our fullback next year depending on if barba can shed a few kilos and get his speed back or not.

I think Vidot has been great coming out of our 20m zone. BUT he has been horrible in attack. He has deadset bombed two certain tries. He needs to learn to find the line when given the oppurtunity. Granted the two tries that I can think of did not cost us the game (Tigers & Dragons) but it will cost us eventually!!!!

I am honestly worried about Vidot's positional nous on the wing. I hope I'm wrong.

Also, any winger who leaves their opposite and, as a result, a try is scored ought to be dropped immediately. No excuses. It's the most basic simple lesson you learn as a winger - never leave your man with a saloon passage to the line unless it's a tactic to force him towards the touchline, and to do that you have be bloody quick and turn on a dime which I somehow can't see a juggernaut like Vidot doing.

Watching him against Manly will be most interesting.

that was a prime example of why having a guy with good footwork who is quick off the mark and slick hands is so important at centre. similar to jamie lyon, dylan walker, etc. can create space when nothing is on. reed just doesnt offer it, despite his best efforts.

Jack Wighton is awesome, should be playing for NSW soon over their current nuffies.

I like Oates in the back row, but yeah, Copley should be in the centres over Reed easily.

Of any of our players, that kind of describes Kahu more than anyone.

Apparently JK was well off the pace on the weekend for the Seagulls.

I feel like Kahu just needs an issue free season / pre-season before we even consider him for first grade, I was all for him being Five-Eighth before the injury he got in the trials, but if he's struggling in ISC, he obviously needs a lot more time, let's pray that he gets through the rest of this season in ISC and plays well, maybe even forcing his way into first grade, hopefully at the expense of Reed.

Reed is such an enigma. He pulls off a good try saving tackle, or works well with Hunt on a grubber chase, then does some woeful things.

What is it? He has showed that he can play really well but has gone backwards. I am convinced it's a combination of lack of attention by Hook together with what I call the "ripple effect" of playing Hoffman at 5/8 where our left hand side is seriously compromised as a result.

What was his injury again? If it's leg (specifically knee) problems, the fact that he's struggling to get back to form is a worry.
