Round 12 - Broncos vs Manly - Pre-Match Discussion

In saying that, I don't see the concern.

If we HAVE to play Hodges then you may as well include some cover for him in case there is an injury or to give you the option of bringing him later into the match when the defence begins to tire and he can weave his magic.

Brisbane traditionally only really need 16 players anyways, the last is usually there for the sake of it or to get some gametime. Usually, their presence means nothing to the game.

As for THaiday playing in the middle, don't let the number on his back fool you, that's where he's predominately been playing.

Both Lyon and Foran named for Manly by the by, makes life a whole lot tougher.

Because I like guessing lineups....

1. Ben Barba
2. Daniel Vidot
3. Jack Reed
5. Dale Copley
14. Lachlan Maranta
6. Josh Hoffman
7. Ben Hunt
8. Josh McGuire
9. Andrew McCullough
17. Ben Hannant
11. Alex Glenn
12. Sam Thaiday
10. Corey Parker

13. Matt Gillette
15. Todd Lowrie
16. Corey Oates
18. Jarrod Wallace

Team is out.

Origin stars are there. All of them. Thaiday returns.

1 Ben Barba
2 Daniel Vidot
3 Jack Reed
4 Justin Hodges ©
5 Dale Copley
6 Josh Hoffman
7 Ben Hunt
8 Josh McGuire
9 Andrew McCullough
10 Corey Parker ©
11 Alex Glenn
12 Sam Thaiday
13 Matt Gillett
Interchange
14 Lachlan Maranta
15 Todd Lowrie
16 Corey Oates
17 Ben Hannant
18 Jarrod Wallace
19 David Hala

Kennedy dropped again. What a spud signing.

Hodges has to get through Origin first.

If Thaiday plays, I hope he remembers that he can do some clever plays with the ball in their red zone.

I hope Oates gets good minutes off the bench.

I pray Vidot doesn't leave his wing unmarked.

I wish Barba gets his act together. We will really really need him. For mine, his form is maybe the most important factor in winning or not, along with the number of missed tackles.

Well Kahu can pass and kick with both feet so please explain yourself.

Can you provide an example at NRL or even QCUP level where Kahu has done either of those things, successfully and consistently, let alone after2 seasons on the sidelines during his prime development time during which he had 2 ACLs done?

I've just got no time for this negative bullshit.

...but got time to suggest the Broncos jump out of the frying pan (Hoffman) into the fire (Kahu).

Kahu is a solid outside back prospect. Nothing more. Was a special talent at high school level as a fullback for Keebra Park.

All for dumping Hoffman to the wing. But not for Kahu.

I think this is fair enough. I don't believe I have seen anything to show he is qualified more so than the other halves we have waiting. I'd prefer somebody who has proven that they can play in the halves. And we all know Hooks opinion on who can play in the halves is warped.

Except that Kahu was looking like the preferred option in the #6 before he went down with injury. As much as it might seem to be the case, Hook likely didn't have Kahu as the frontrunner for no reason at all. Hoffman is only there because he was the next best thing, and because he was squealing like a stuck pig at not getting a spine position.

Ultimately, Kahu isn't the type of player you want there but certainly somebody you'd want over Hoffman.

He's getting the nod from some because he's played first grade before, didn't look out of place and has shown more playmaking skills in the trials than Hoffman really ever did and would be familiar with the team structures.

Would it make us a premiership threat? In my opinion, no, but based on what I have seen of this guy from NYC, Q Cup, Trials and First Grade I'd have him over Hoffman.

He was hurt in the first trial where it was Nikorima showing all the playmaking skills. Obviously I'd take Kahu over Hoffman but there are like 10 others that I'd take over Hoffman too, so that isn't saying much at all.

I can only think of one, Duncan Paia'aua and he is most probably not ready. Kahu showed a couple of nice touches in that first trial and layed on a try with a beautiful cutout pass from memory.
Nikorima does not have a lot of playmaking skills in the U20s so he must of played out of his skin in that trial as he is usually more of a runner than playmaker.

Memory is a little foggy now, but he was hurt in the dying stages wasn't he?

The way I remember it, Kodi was more involved but it seemed like he took a quantity > quality approach and it really exposed how raw he was with the football and his defence was horrific. Kahu on the other hand was coming up with a couple of big plays including a money ball to Vidot which was probably the best pass any Broncos player produced that night.

I haven't seen much vision of JK since and reports haven't been positive. Will be interesting, but I think members are talking him up more since he's the most likely replacement for Hoffman and fans are eager to make that change.

Personally, I'd rather see JK move into the centres and have Hodges move to five eigth (Copley right centre, Hoffman wing) but that is neither here nor there.

I think we are missing Mitchell Dodds this year. He and Moose compliment each other in the front row as shown in 2008 U20s. I felt he was just starting to come on when he suffered his injury last year. He would add a bit of starch to the pack

Quite right BP
I think we are clutching at straws because there is really no viable replacement this season. Next season hopefully Milford and also the younger guys would be another year older and more physically up to it

In the first trial at Reddy, I remember Strasser throwing a beautiful cutout ball. I don't remember Kahu doing it, but I could have been getting another brew at the time. Kahu did look very comfortable, but it was trial where we were completely outclassed, not to mention it was around 15 games ago...

I'm, by no means whatsoever, advocating Strasser to be moved to first grade, but he has been throwing those impeccable and classy cutout balls week-in, week-out. I can only imagine the extra dimension any true 5/8 would add to our attack - no matter their deficiencies.

Not having a go at Hoffman either, he is doing the best he can with what he is being told to do. It isn't his fault he is playing out of position.
While i dont believe Strasser is the answer, he could very well offer more than Hoffman

Unfortunately there have been games where Zach has been fortunate to play ISC.

He's improved in recent weeks, but not by much.
