POST GAME Round 17 - Titans vs Broncos

The last 4 premiers had hookers that are quick out of dummy half and provided quick service.

They were all crucial parts of their success.
The last four premiers didn't have the same ridiculously slow play the balls we seem to get every week either.

Because they had hookers that could get their team on the front foot due to their speed and service out of dummy half which allowed them to get more quick play the balls.

They also didn't have a five-eighth who took 15 minutes to get off their fat ass. We have been out-wrestled on the ground in every game since 2000-and something.

Who tipped Andrew McCullough as the 2018 BHQ Scapegoat this year?

I don't know if he is, Boyd and Kodi are both up there (And I've been plenty critical of Kodi though I don't believe a single player ever outright solely determines how a side goes in a season) as well.

They would have been wrong ... have you not been watching the Boyd Bashing this year
Yeah but he's been playing well for almost two months now so everyone's shut up about him. Same blokes have been very quiet regarding other things too

Just publicly announcing that I'm on the team "Macca is slow and occasionally rubbish at passing from dummy half" so if yall keeping score to win the argument....

It was Turpin's first game, and he was fine. Plenty of times Milf and Kodi have had to reach for Macca's passes, and my actual key point, in the attacking zone, Macca often sends the ball the wrong way (leaving Milf, usually, flapping his arms in frustration). Some of you blokes on here need to learn to accept valid criticism to your darlings. No doubt Macca has improved, but it's been a recurring fault of his as long as I've seen him play. Lack of vision.

What? So we can't criticise Turpin? I thought he had a good game also, but to call for him to replace McCullough at 9 and criticise Macca for 1 pass out of every 50 he makes is just ridiculous. His service out of dummy half in the past may have been slow, but I really don't think that is the case anymore (except for the odd occasion here or there). You're probably right regarding his lack of vision (on occasion). Given Milford's lack of form this season (last 1 1/2 games excluded) maybe Macca hasn't always been wrong in not going to him.

McCullough seems to pass in 2 motions - pick the ball up, and then aim and throw. He seems to do this most of the time. The better hookers do it in one when passing to the halves. They often seem to have better accuracy despite this too.

There was a lot of talk about Origin 3 (being a dead rubber) was an ideal time to blood the future, cA$h Taylor.

He doesn't get picked so IMO, this game was his to stick it to the selectors and prove them wrong

But all he did was prove them right

I love Macca as much as anyone, but he absolutely still has some small deficiencies in his service, he could actually learn a bit from Turpin in terms of his technique, that quick first step out of dummy half before assessing who to pass to, or whether there's metres on offer is a really dangerous tool to have, guys like Cook & Luke are the masters of it.

But it might be one of those cases where it's "can't teach an old dog new tricks", you rarely see Hooker's completely change their technique this late in their careers, if at all.

Just watching the replay, and when Korbin Sims made a linebreak around the 44th minute mark. Milford was held onto by Rein, I remember some people complaining about this in the live game thread. Plays continues and then Mago gets his penalty. One of the refs speaks to the other ref, saying have a word to Mitch Rein that he doesn't drag anyone back in the chase back there or something to that effect. Why have a word to him, if it's worthy of being to spoken to about penalize him for it

Turps had a decent debut but he doesn't scream "replace Macca with me". He looks to be a fine second tier hooker but it is doubtful he will ever hold down a regular first grade job. Not with the Broncos anyway. He's not in the same galaxy as Andy Mac but he may be one day (although highly unlikely).

What galaxy is Andy Mac from? Sometimes I have no idea

Uh...could you quote me about Turpin replacing Macca fella?

Your last point is redundant - would Milf have been as 'average' if he got the ball when and where he wanted it? Maybe, maybe not. Certainly better service from hooker couldn't hurt. This has been going on for years. Though, as I said (quote me) Macca is improving.

You obviously don't watch him closely enough. You can criticise McCullough on a lot of things, but to say his passes aren't to/on the chest is one you cannot. Watch him more closely next time, his passing (after his defence) is his strongest asset. You can debate the speed of service of pass, but not the quality. That's just criticising something for the sake of it. If you actually watch yesterday's game there were many times that Turpin looked like a lost dog chasing his tail as he looked for options. At least twice I remember him running backwards to find an option.

McCullough's game has improved this season and in particular since Origin 1. Watch him now deliver crisp passes, 3 or 4 wide off the ground. I'm sure if McCullough was playing yesterday off the back of that forward pack and delivered a man of the match performance there'd still be criticism of his game.

You're seriously delusional.

Sims didn't even look to his right though - that was the most frustrating thing. Milf is constantly supporting runners and rarely getting a decent offload.
