Round 2 - Broncos vs Cowboys - Post Match Discussion

Norman need to run ball less? HAHA.. read what I wrote two years ago on here about being a long term replacement for Lockyer. He only runs it so much cause he does everything in slow motion and by the time he's going to pass, the defense on the outside is already up in their faces. Plus he lacks a good passing game. He'll always run it 11 times out of 8. Nothing has changed. He doesn't have great speed or strength to be a ball running 6 either.

Norman was frustrating, but that try to Te'o is why I think he's got something special.

Showed excellent vision to create the overlap and then threw a cracker of a pass which drew Thurston across, creating the gap for Te'o to run straight through.

He was at his best in that situation when he didn't think, he just reacted.
You can literally hear the cogs turning in his head when he's at first receiver. It's not natural for him.

Overall as heartbreaking as the loss was I'm not too upset. We managed to put on 4 tries, and our attack was much better than last week. A few poor lapses in defence but the main problem was all the penalties we gave away, and possession in our own half from silly errors.

Agree with Jeb. Thaiday back to the back row, Te'o to bench, Mcguire or Civoniceva to start.

Beale was wretched on the wing, but more and more I agree with Porthoz - he's just not a winger, period. Unfortunately for him it's either wing or left right out.

Bowen ALWAYS carves us up and tonight was no exception. Little bastard. They cut us up the middle quite a few times and I don't think Hook will be pleased by that. We have ****ed the balance of the side by putting Thaiday up front IMO. McGuire is well on his way to being the best prop in the game in the future (early days). Norman needs to run the ball less and look to put his runners into holes more. Hunt needs more minutes, has been a clear winner over Macca in the first 2 games IMO. Hodges needs to pull his head in, abusing his team mates like that is weak. Save it for the dressing room. We need to get our backs more quality ball and we need more in attack from Hoffman. Kicking game needs work in a big way.
I think Macca offers more defensively but we look more likely to score with hunt on the field.

I can't figure out why Hoffman stays back all the time, why there weren't 2nd phase plays with Hoff in the line, and why we don't use Gillett as a running back rower instead of ALWAYS giving the ball to Parker. What a waste of strike power.

I agree that Beale is looking very shaky on the wing. I reckon he's going to get a lot of catching practice, both at training and next time he plays on the wing.

Just got home from the game, and pretty shattered with the result. It's
always tough to loose like that at the very end... :wall:

Just gonna put my thoughts out there before reading anything or even watching highlights...

Congrats to the Cows, who made the most out of a very entertaining game,
although still riddled with too many errors and missed tackles, especially for
two teams with aspirations.

Refs were horrible for both sides, there were a few bad calls and soft
penalties against us, mainly in the first half, which gave the Cows a leg up
and probably the game. I mean, how much doubt can you have before you rule No
Try? :rash:

On the other hand, the Broncos have to take responsibility for their defense,
and it was pretty bad today, with Thurston and Bowen opening us up through the
middle, and uncharecteristic mistakes from Parker and Thaiday, amongst others.

Last, but not least... Beale is not a winger and any self respecting coach
will target him with high balls. You can't keep him in a position he is clearly
not good enough in, just because he's a quality player!

haha! I said the same thing just above, and even referenced you :-)

Agreed. But the only position for him if not wing is the QLD cup.

Just on Beale, I consider Gillett a quality player but if we could only fit him in at five eigth and he was performing terribly I wouldn't have any qualms with dropping him for an alternative.

Nothing against Beale, or even his defender/s personally, he just isn't a winger.

disappointing loss. lots to work on! my thoughts (which may have been covered as i skimmed alot of the thread and have had a few drinks)

-Hunt looked great. he is outplaying macca in these early stages of the season. Macca is slowwwwwwwwww
-Norman is doing alright imo. some poor options yeah. but having said that, i dont feel like he was getting the support he needed. no one was running off him.etc. not sure who's fault that is. maybe no ones. maybe its just too early in the season.
-Hoffman isnt getting involved enough from the back in attack.
-Beale - i said before the season started i want gagai on the wing. as has been said beale is just not a winger.

loving hodges. hes building to have a great year.

hopefully thaiday grows into this captain role because at the moment he's not really stepping up to it.

i dont blame the refs but they were a bit shonky against us.

and yes, only round 2. we do have a way to go. a top side would of carved us up tonight. thurston looked lacking in confidence in my opinion.

Yeah, that's where he would go if I were Hook. Get Gagai or Copley in there, who are more capable of playing the position.

Do you agree that Wallace was the best Bronco tonight as well, or am I pushing my luck? :cheesy:

I love BHQ and its turncoat, "sky is falling" posters. You'd have all turned to AFL supporters by now if you followed Souths.

Don't be gutted. Bowen's try was BS but so was McGuires.

Norman has invented a new position called "runs at the line" which is essentially a 5/8 except plays like a 7th forward and does a hit up on every possession.

Dunno why he took it on himself to one-on-one from each penalty tap?

Yep there's a few lameo's on here.

Griffen's comments in the post-match presser are interesting. Too many silly penalties, errors and just not prepared to work hard enough for the result. That first half was a shocker - we just handed them the initiative through stupid plays. If we'd won it would've just masked a lot of things we didn't do well.

Any idea what happened to Gillett tonight? He struggled to get anywhere near it. Will need to watch the tape before passing judgement on Parker. I thought he had a solid game but stand to be corrected.

No need to slit wrists yet - the Cows were always going to come hard and we'll need a few weeks to get our combinations going. Norman's taking the line on a bit - that will hopefully bear some fruit in the coming weeks.

Meh. He was solid without being spectacular. As usual :-p
