POST GAME [Round 21, 2024] Broncos vs Bulldogs

If you want to build a club around a marquee player, you might need to pay above market to retain them. Walsh has serious star power. That's just as valuable to the club off the field. As everyone knows, it isn't how much they need to pay him: it's fitting him under a cap.
We can just agree to disagree. This is gonna be my last post on the issue.
You don’t need to fit him under the cap we need a balanced roster of 30 players under the cap.
Overpaying any single one player (especially one who isn’t a 6 or 7) reduces the overall likelihood of having a balance of the remaining 29.
Sure it’s a gamble that might pay off but great sides don’t make gambles, that’s what loser clubs do and it digs a hole it take years to get out of.
The salary cap is designed to be a reflection of on field talent, paying extra for star power off the field is insane. I don’t know of a single successful club who would even consider it.

He's also by far our best player and a dedicated student of the game, who is constantly working on his game and looking for weaknesses in opponents. There's that.

Your very sound point has lured me into another comment.
Yes I agree, it’s totally justified for him to be our highest player, just not the highest paid in the league

This talk of Walsh just confirms we are badly coached imo. In what world does a team not have plans for when a gun player is worked out?

We should be capitalising on the focus on Walsh, and attacking other areas. We are not.

Bad coaching, dumb players. Where's Reynolds criticism?

He needs to study better goal line defensive positioning. So many times he seems he's caught out of position, especially on short kicks behind the line.
He also needs to read book or 3 on how to push up through the ruck off the shoulder of haas or Patty, his speed would find heaps of tired defenders napping. I really hoped slater would have taught him to that in origin camp.
A short course on calming down and not trying to do it all yourself wouldn't go astray either.

It felt like he was kinda missing yesterday, he didn't seem to be organising those sweeping attacking plays we were nailing last week vs the knights. Dogs effectively bullied him.

There needs to be an investigation into Ciraldo/Bulldogs.

We can't have coaches watching film and constructing gameplans to exploit the defensive weaknesses of the opponents.

Meanwhile, kevvie watches the tactics of a team unfolding and destroying his team live, in real time, and can't adjust anything to stop it.
Kev yesterday, after watching the dogs run around us for the 12th or 13th time, was like that meme of the dog sitting in the burning down house saying "this is fine".
Just shocking no adjustments could be made on the fly.

Guess who got a headache from this match I did probably because of the mutts

it’s shocking to me that we looked flat and out of sync when we played the roosters in round one and in all this time literally nothing has changed to improve the issues that showed in our very first game
There has pretty much been nothing but excuses all year

Short pre season
Size of the field (Vegas)
Injuries
State of Origin
Refereeing

Yeah thats a pretty accurate comparison there mate, I recall reading one of Alfies books that he was considering leaving the Broncos during that period to join the Adelaide Rams in 1997 because he felt the squad environment had gotten toxic and others around him just weren't willing to give 100% but Bennett convinced him to stay. Bennett got rid of a number of big name players to send a message to the squad to shape up or ship out.

If you don't have the hard work in the bank, you can't draw on it now. You can think you're working hard but when it gets to July there is no hiding and yesterday was a team that wants success and did the work in November and one that thought they were doing the work and would resume after lunch on 99 and 100 would just come because of talent and skill.

Too many steps short from the Broncos.

Missing finals might be the best thing that happens to this side. Now they need no one at training tomorrow and no fan fare or selfies to really hammer it home.

Worse than that, he complimented the Bulldogs and said they were the better team. They were clearly not the better team on paper, so that's like saying they were better coached.

Missing the finals in one thing but the wheels completely falling off is another.

After sleeping on it the issue isn’t our players lack of effort or motivation, our coach’s lack of ability, the inconsistent/biased refereeing.

The game was played in the daytime.

Yeah a couple of decisions go our way that didn't, and  maybe we get some more early points and confidence. The rake on staggs and subsequent challenge, the Curran rough housing of Reynolds etc
But we do ourselves no favours, we have skill for heaping pressure on our selves, we can't ruck it out from our end consistently, we offer nothing in attack other than bomb and hope or individual freakishness, our players are constantly being mobbed and out muscled (forwards and backs), we allow teams to get easy meters, we're terrible at any form of short restart, we make dumb mistakes and give away stupid penalties.

But mostly we can’t defend at all.
