[Round 23, 2021] Broncos vs Warriors

Can't comment on Fox, but the Nine commentators called it a howler. It looks the other way around from this angle, but it's too fast to tell. In freeze frame as we saw it on TV it looked like we were dudded, but had it been two years ago, the attacking team would've got benefit of the doubt.

Sometimes it's the other way around. Like that downtown ruling against Mark Nicholls on Friday night that Bennett said he couldn't understand. The refs got that 100% right, but what is more interesting is how often they let it go. I saw the exact same infringement after a Milford kick today, with nothing said. Maybe there's some kind of leeway given in Rugby League, but I can tell you that's a major penalty every time in Union. That's why kickers always sprint ahead after their kicks to put everyone on side. Unlike Milford, who puts up a bomb and then licks his lips thinking about his next Big Mac.

Even going by frame by frame, the other angles show Coates grounded it first. The Channel 9 callers were right, it's a howler.

Two years ago, it still would have been no try because there isn't sufficient evidence to overturn the on-field call.

BTW, did anyone else that went to the game have a laugh at the several 6 again announcements that happened during stoppages in play.

one even happened after half time had been called, lol. someone must have kept leaning on the button lol
The button guy couldn't believe how little he was required, snuck them in wherever he could!

The officiating today was very poor. Some of the big errors that could have had a larger impact on the outcome of the game including:

-cecchin calling a knock on before the ball was made dead, denying the broncos a try (also funny they kept calling tevita-harris, walsh even though the 6 jersey was clearly visible)
-cecchin calling a clear double movement a try (luckily even perenara could not give that one).
-nui's pass putting cobbo into space called forward.
-stopping the game for a hit on the kicker that did not warrant a penalty
-very forward pass from hiku missed in the last 5 mins (led to a repeat set for the warriors, with the next set leading to the 'try')
- THAT last "try".

I accept that referees will not be perfect and errors will be made, but when you are having numerous big clangers that can affect the outcome, it simply isn't good enough.

Wasn't suggesting anything bad about it at all. Just that it's something I haven't seen in a long time.
That’s because it’s quackery, and these days everyone can find that out with Google.

I thought I heard him say that as well... thought he said "I called held way after this point" when CHT had just lost the ball, because I was like awesome it will be play on then.

And then right at the end Henry zooms out to show Cecchin with the whistle in his mouth... although doesn't mean that he actually blew it.
Wouldn’t the videos have audio?

Am I the only one who doesn't think Herbie isn't a ball hog, but just chooses the right moments to pass?

I haven't seen many times when I thought he should of passed, I just see him trying to get into a position in order for the pass to actually make sense and position the winger to be in space and not immediately tackled or taken over the sideline.
Not just you mate. I don’t know if it is a narrative that people have focused on or if it is the fact that it looks different on TV but you see at the ground that nearly every one of the scenarios that people complain he doesn’t pass Oates is either in front of him already (which was actually witnessed late in the game where he did throw it anyway) or Oates is so close to the touch line he would be bundled out straight away.

I tell you what I loved in that game, when DWZ scored and was smiling and laughing at Milf. The look on his face when he got pushed after scoring was priceless. The face of someone who has never had to deal with the consequences of his actions.
Happened right in front of us. Milford barely touched him and I hope for DWZ the massive dive was acting because it was amazingly pathetic.

It was unexpected and he was already off balance. I don’t think it was much of a dive. Pretty bad sportsmanship from Milf to be honest but good to see him caring.

Fox were filthy about it. Cronk was praising them for getting it right only
for the screen to show try - at which point he was in disbelief.
I’m pretty sure the idiot in the bunker pressed the wrong button. He pressed the 6 again button twice during one of the video ref decisions and again during a couple kicks for goal. Absolute monkey.

True, if the ref called it no-try, but I suspect it would've been called a try because of the benefit of the doubt to the attacker. Not losing a lot of sleep over this one, other than wondering why the Bunker ruled the opposite of what we saw.

We can moan about it, but the Bunker and captain's challenge is about as good as we could hope for in forensic adjudication. I can only assume what we saw rolling on TV wasn't all they saw. I guess. Puzzling one.

Or what @Morepudding said.

Nope, I distinctly heard Perenara say in the background that Aitken grounded the ball in the in goal. Go back to that moment and listen behind the commentary. If anything he sounded very hasty to make the decision.

Looking at the replay of Milford’s try, Reece Walsh collects him flush on the chin with a swinging arm. Should have been a penalty try.
Please don't complain about things when you don't even know the rules.

Herbie doesn't actually look to get himself into a position to put his winger away, he generally pushes towards the side line trying to beat his man on the outside. This also comes into having a useless backrower next to him, and little from the #6 most of the time so he does what he can. You will see all the best centres position themselves to either break the line, or drag in the winger and put away his winger in the hole. Even the job filler centres like Harper are excellent at positioning themselves to give the winger space.

All Herbie needs to do is this a few times, and it will make it easier for him to break the line himself once teams realise he has it in him to set someone else up.

I'm with you.. there have been a couple of times but majority of times there isn't much room on the outside for Oates.
Oates would be better cutting back in field with Herbie attracting the centre and winger and slips him under getting Oates getting 1 on 1 with the half back

Well, I'm probably the pioneer Herbie basher, so I'll take this one.

I've been watching him closely all season, particularly after he won BHQ Player of the Round twice, waiting for him to do more than just look like something's about to happen. But it never does. He really doesn't look to hook up with other players. And he doesn't find the line. He just makes metres up the middle. That's not nothing, but it's a forward's role.

And it's not about the support. That's another issue. One that's endemic across the entire team. Actually a far bigger worry, but for another post. It's about him never trying to get in a position to link up, draw the defence and put his neighbour through a gap. It's about him not looking for support. Even when there is support, he doesn't even acknowledge it.

I've always considered Staggs a bit of a hog too. But he makes up for it by barging across the line, seemingly at will. And when he came back from injury - maybe because he's angling for a halves role - he was very clearly looking to link up and use his gaps and overlaps. Herbie NEVER creates an overlap. He runs sideways. He breaks the odd tackle. He hits it up. And then plays the ball.

Don't get me wrong: I'm not hating on Herbie. The kid has some skill. I'm just not seeing him perform the basics of what's required in a centre.

On the other hand, I'm seeing some progress in Niu. He's trying to do exactly what I want Herbie to do, albeit with varying success. I'm hoping his other issues - mostly effort related - might get ironed out with experience.

Not to rag on the kid too much because he tries hard and his defence has improved but I’ve never seen a winger turn their back on a bomb while literally covering their head and ducking for cover.

Our fullback and right wing are scared of the ball.

Nah he doesn't even look for the pass. Get's white line fever and just goes hard. Definitely not a bad thing. I want to see him get into dummy half and have more runs. He's giving me Hodges vibes with the way he always beats the first man.
