POST GAME Round 25 - Broncos vs Eels

If we actually turned up to play we would have absolutely hammered the Eels.

Look at the stats, it's a pretty even contest statistically, but we somehow managed to leak 52 points.. While sitting in 2nd.

The attitude from this side, that is what's wrong and it's been a problem all season. We will have a few good wins and then we will just suddenly go to shit and go backwards. Then it's back to square one all over again.

It's not a quick fix.

We all saw the same game. Don't worry, I'm not saying we played well at all. We played like a bunch of under 12's. But it's not the end of the world.

More often than not, gritty teams win premierships. The Broncos of the 90's won by simply having a better team, but the game was not as structured as it is now.
Take the Cowboys '15 team out (that relied on skill and a fair share of luck) and it's hard to find a team that's won a comp in the last decade that hasn't won be being dogged, relentless, ruthless and meticulous.
You simply cannot say that about the 2017 Broncos - win, lose or draw.
We may get lucky and do a Tigers '05 and simply outscore our rivals, but that really does seem to be our only chance unless we get a mean streak in us.

I guess what I am trying to say is, I am sick of us being an 'also-ran' side, I want the Broncos to be the team all the other teams worry about. Right now, we just aren't.

A penalty count of 10-2 certainly helped the game stay 'close'.

We were taking the wrong option nearly every time and then compounding it by some atrocious ball security and passing.

I'm certain it's just an anomoly and we're still in with a shot, it was just a night where everything that could go wrong did... apart from the penalties that kept us in it.

I get what you're saying, but I don't agree with it 100%. Tough teams do buckle all the time. Storm vs Manly GF for example. I think it's pretty tough to say it's over from a single terrible game. It was well out of character, and that is evident from our position on the ladder. It happens from time to time, we are never going to be the Storm. Their cheating meant that have been able to form a formidable spine that they were able to retain all of these years. People will deny it all they like, but their cheating is still helping them to this day.

I get what you're saying, but I don't agree with it 100%. Tough teams do buckle all the time. Storm vs Manly GF for example. I think it's pretty tough to say it's over from a single terrible game. It was well out of character, and that is evident from our position on the ladder. It happens from time to time, we are never going to be the Storm. People will deny it all they like, but their cheating is still helping them to this day.

I mentioned in an earlier comment that Melbourne got spanked in that GF because they played their GF the week before against us, like the Cowboys last year. Neither team had anything left after we played them until the 80th minute.
I don't disagree one bit about Melbourne cheating and still receiving the benefit of such.
But I also mentioned earlier that they have clones of Smith, Cronk and Slater just waiting to fit into, what pains me to say, the amazing system that they have down there. Croft, Munster, they just seamlessly fit into the machine they have and rarely miss a beat.
We don't. We're just not a formidable team.
Anyway, debating this is all academic.
For what it's worth, I hope you're right and I'm wrong.

I've seen enough from this team throughout the year to suggest we are a threat, even after last night's debacle. Problem is we sometimes turn up flat and turn our toes up when the going is tough. This side isn't the best side in the comp but if they can time their run ( and it needs to start this week), they can win it. Just depends whether these guys want it bad enough.

I guess, it really should have only been 34-46. Considering how bad we played, that's only 12-nil.

In my opinion it should be 34-40 if anybody actually bothered to review Semi's tap forward. Also would have been closer if Milford wasn't the one kicking. If Kahu isn't back for the finals, we can almost kiss our season goodbye.

Milf tried hard all night, but I can imagine it's pretty hard to influence things when your captain is setting the example by throwing loose passes, knocking kicks into touch in our corners, refraining from tackling and carrying on like a 3yr old after every tackle.

Whilst I agree to a point, Milford is the best payed player in our squad and our chief playmaker. Boyd (and all senior players really) has the responsibilty to make sure the team remains "up" for the contest. He also has responsibility to set the tempo of play, and along with milf, the hooker, and knik, to know when to chance the proverbial arm.
Milford is the bloke they all look to in attack, he has right to the ball wherever and whenever he needs it. Along with that goes the responsibility to see sets finished, one way or another.
He is a brilliant attacking individual, but it must go further than that. He needs to be more than just a supplicant to supporting players receiving his pass. He has the authority to direct play. No one else does or should.
Knik, hunt, thaiday intentionsare subservient to his calls and his direction. When he takes this role on, the team will prosper no end. That's what I mean when I talk about leadership.
At the moment thaiday does his thing, when he wants, hunt, his thing, and knik plays what's in front of him. None have directed how the broncos play. Its great when attacking play is called for, but a nightmare when a settler set is required, be it for a tired defence or the need for some territory. .. In one call milf can change what his team does: an early kick when under pressure, or a run at the line to give momentum. He has the power, he needs to learn to use it, and communicate his intentions and the role of those around him.
He may not be comfortable doing it, and an ash Taylor or Brodie croft better at it, but if he doesnt, no one else will.

How often do unstructured sides win premierships? They are often great to watch during the regular season, but the finals are often dominated by teams who play safer and smarter, and Grand Finals are really ONLY won by those teams. Really think we'll be wanting a halfback in the near future and hopefully Cam Smith in the coaching team ASAP.
