Round 26 Broncos vs Storm - Pre Game Discussion

Vidot won't be going up against Koroibete. They both play on the left.

Maranta would be going up against him and Vidot would be going up against Waqa.

That's right. The latter will be a bit worrying, but the former might be a good tactic.

Oates was not well last week. He should be fine this week. Sam Thaiday missing this game was unfortunate but we will be able to cover for him. Should be a good game, we have been analysing quite a bit of footage. Melbourne have some defensive issues that we will be looking to exploit.

Thanks for the update Hook.. just win ffs.

So is it confirmed that Oates will be a straight swap for Thaiday?

Just had a look at the team - on paper I think we have a better side. I hope it's a close game and we sneak home with a win. We never start well down there so that's important to fix. Even in the great ambush in 2010 we were down 10-nil or something like that. I want big games out of several players - our captains, Ben Hunt, Gillett and Reed.

Hodges and Parker need to show some strong leadership against a side that has the wood all over us. Those two come from an era where it wasn't all one-way traffic against the Storm and need to show belief that they are beatable.

Ben Hunt had probably his worse game the last time the two sides met. I don't want to be overly critical as most of the side were poor that night but he is back to his scintillating best and he needs to show he can do it against more highly fancied sides.

I hang a fair bit of **** on Gillett but his efforts lately have been absolutely immense. On Friday he proved he is a match winner of world class standard.

Reed's form has improved out of sight as well. His defense is good and he's finding the line. Not sure who he is marking, Chambers or Fonua, but both will be good battles.

Would have thought so too but they interviewed one of the players and they said Oates was ready to step up.

Well that could mean anything, from bad to good, wasted up the middle, or dangerous on the edges. I just hope he has Cronk and Smith in his sights

I just shudder at the prospect of Cronk and Smith being given time and room to set their plays - reminds me of how we let Reynolds have an hour and an acre to set up Inglis

Perhaps Gillett will be moved to 13 and Oates will start in the second row.

The only sane options, as far as I'm concerned, are Parker to lock/Hannant or Kennedy to start or Lowrie to lock (because he's worthless off the bench), and then sub him off after 20 and never bring him back.

I would prefer that too. The Kennedy / Hannant to start I mean.

The last time we played Storm in Melbourne.

I got to say, the Broncos didn't play as badly as the scoreline suggested.

They had plenty of opportunities in the Storm 20, but strong defense and Maranta bombing quite a few tries is what stopped us from scoring. If Broncos had the halves and the back line they have this year, they win that game.

Starting with Kennedy at prop and Parker at lock would be my preference also.

Just as important for mine is the the catching of the back three, the storm have strong kicking game and we are going to need to be very good under the high ball.

If we give them repeat sets or keep dropping the high ball in our 20 we are in for trouble. Our catching has been really frustrating to watch this year.

Absolutely this. We've lost at least 2 matches this season (Sharks and Titans) due to our backs not taking catches so no doubt Cronk will be bombing the shit outta Vidot, Maranta and Hodges all night long. Hopefully we take the first couple and gain some confidence which will force the Storm to come up with a new strategy.

Pressuring Cronk before he kicks will be important too.

Look, basically, we have to be on our game for the full 80 minutes .... no clocking off early, and certainly no dumb penalties and cheap turnover of possession.

Which is kind of a plus that Thaiday's not playing.
