Round 6 - Broncos vs Panthers

Yeah... But I've been calling continuously for weeks to :

1. Drop Milford and..
2. Give Croft and Dearden a run and let them play their natural game.

I'm going to take the W, and claim the foresight on this one. I've been mocked about my calls to give these boys a go to run the team their way without Milford over calling the attack.

Surely y'all are man enough to.... View attachment 12417
they played together last year and now have a grand total of 4 of those big yellow L’s and no W’s.

maybe put the cork back in the champagne there buddy

We stopped attacking through the middle as much towards the end, that's where Penrith were vulnerable. Spreading the ball to the edges wasn't really troubling them too much. More of the Croft/Bully type stuff would have won us the game.

Yeah we should be expecting Dearden who was only a teenager until last month and who has only played a handful of first grade games for a bottom of the ladder team to be running circles around the Panthers like he's Lockyer incarnate? Anyone remember how Cleary played when he was called up to first grade?

At least with Dearden on the team seems to actually give a s**t about playing as a team. Look at last week, couple of plays from Dearden got the boys charged up for the first time in years, something we are really missing. It lasted all but 5 minutes when Milford took the tackle on the 5th and kicked it dead in-goal.

Truly competing against a premiership favourite and keeping scores competitive.

Almost like you made a change from previous games/years. Wasn't there a player dropped or something?
We dropped our Milf-stone...

This was a game tonight where Fifita would have made an impact run to score on Glenn’s side I feel
We did miss a big opportunity tonight. Penrith were there for the taking
Problem was we didn't execute any sort of play in the 2nd half. But more attacking weapons would help I'm sure

A lot left to work on, beat ourselves again with some dumb plays, but much improved consistent effort. Loved the improved contact, for the whole game, and in numbers too, we need to see it every week now. Oates had a massive impact starting off our sets & getting us out of our end. Bullemor was good off the bench, should have been there all year instead of teo imo. Flegler was poor, his first 3 plays he conceded a lb, a set restart & a penalty. He needs a run in qcup for a few weeks to get some consistency because he has none atm. Cardigan is still trying to do too much as well, he’s a straight up prop imo and should probably be coming off the bench. Dearden is still too passive, if he doesn’t have the confidence to call for the Ball and take on some kicking he shouldn’t be in the nrl. He needs to show a lot more, because atm he’s a qld cup half and should be paid accordingly.

Yeah he missed a bad one when they scored up the guts, I can't recall who scored, possibly Reynolds. But I'm not saying Riki is perfect, but he is better than Glenn and needs the experience.

I agree but it's a development thing, this is only his 2nd season in the NRL, it's the same for a few other exciting prospects too

Everyone played for each other, and for the jersey, and it really showed. We really rattled them for almost the full 80. For mine, that has been the missing secret ingredient for years.

Once Herbie and Staggs return , we will, on that performance be a force to be reckoned with.

Thought he was a little slow sometimes when we were getting a bit of a roll on. Needs to challenge the try line himself a few times a game as well.
He threw a million forward passes too, and only got pinged once... I like his effort... But for godsakes, why can’t we find some fucking skillz?

Kevvie is blowing up in the presser and rightly so.

Yeah flegler wasn’t good. Cardigan was better (no errors) but he needs to run harder. He almost always gets the ball standing flat.

It has that air of Round 23 2006 vs. Melbourne where Brisbane out-played Melbourne for the majority but just let the game slip away. As mitch222 said, it's how they back up that's important but that was the best performance I've seen from the Broncos since Round 2 2020.

The forwards were immense but as Cult3 and others have pointed out, it was the halves who also made life difficult for the Panthers. There were no soft targets, the Broncos were constantly pushing and while I wouldn't say their defensive structures were great they made up for it with their effort. The thing with the halves is that they weren't just making their targets, they were coming up with some great tackles.

I just think when they had their opportunities the playmakers didn't take onus and really challenge the Panthers defensive line and some of the options were just poor. Isaako in particular was constantly out of position and was easily marked by the Panthers defence. His kick on tackle two was brain dead and he was just way too close to Pangai when Tevita popped the offload. I hated that second man play to Brodie Croft, another just brain dead play and close to the line they need to put Carrigan on decoy duty because that isn't his speciality. He absolutely killed one of those sets late with a nothing settler. I hated that late field goal attempt as well, just keep the pressure on, Penrith were in all sorts.

It probably sounds like I'm down on the players but there was a lot to like and we finally saw some signs of life.
That second man play to croft was horrible

He is no longer first grade standard. Put Riki on the left edge. Glenn is quickly turning himself into the Boyd of 2020.
I don't want anyone trying that on Glenn. He shouldn't have played, he'd been sick. He should have been rested but saying that he's been down for a couple of matches now.

What's kevvie saying?

Exactly this. We defended well but our halves are bad. Croft was decent but Dearden literally did nothing at all, except miss tackles. Put Karmichael Hunt in

I think Kev just simplified the game to that extent. Complete the sets and kick to To’o. It’s a great place to build from but some guys (mostly just Isaako) still didn’t buy in and tried to be too cute at times. The boring plan almost worked against the best team in the comp. apparently Kev’s half time speech was “don’t get bored doing what is working”. In other words, continue to play the high % game.

The flashy attack comes later. I’m happy to give Dearden a pass. There was obviously a run first, and keep play straightened game plan.
