POST GAME Round 6 - Broncos vs Roosters

Broncos defeat Roosters 32-8: Five things we learned
Peter Badel and Rikki-Lee Arnold, The Courier-MailApril 6, 2017 11:07pm

MOGA couldn’t handle it, so Mead did the heavy lifting and Thaiday’s good on the bench. Here’s what else we took from Brisbane’s victory.

1. TAUTAU Moga should be axed. Since a promising round-one debut for the Broncos, the hulking centre has been quiet and last night he was a turnstile in defence. Granted, he set up a late try, but he gifted the Roosters two four-pointers with feeble defensive efforts and also made a handling error. Jordan Kahu would be a better option at centre with David Mead a viable option on the wing.

2 — DAVID Mead was finally handed his Broncos debut and handled the occasion well. With Corey Oates ruled out with a groin injury, Mead played outside an erratic Moga to put in a solid first performance for Brisbane. He scored a try late in the match and also impressed with his running game, making 193m off 19 runs. With four tackle busts and three offloads on top of this, Mead did well to earn himself a recall next week.

3 — THE Broncos should persist with Sam Thaiday on the bench. While he is undoubtedly starting quality, Thaiday always gives Brisbane a major lift with his experience and energy off interchange. Coach Wayne Bennett made a late switch by putting Thaiday on the bench and the tactic worked, with the Maroons veteran scoring with his second touch of the ball.

4 — BRISBANE hooker Andrew McCullough is in his career-best form. Always one of the Broncos’ most reliable, McCullough was on fire against the Roosters, scoring the first try of the match out of dummy-half. He also broke Sydney’s spirit in the 57th minute with an outstanding try-saving ankle tap on Mitchell Pearce.

5 — MAROONS coach Kevin Walters says Aidan Guerra is an automatic selection for Origin next month, but the Roosters forward should not get too comfortable. While he put in a mammoth effort in defence and was solid in attack, he was far from the star of Sydney’s forward pack and did not have the desired impact when things were tough for his side. He is reliable, but he might need to take his game to another level before donning a Queensland jersey again.

Great to bank a solid win. Pretty good performances across the park with Macca, Milf and Roberts the stand outs for me.

Jimmy seems to have improved out of sight this year, loving his involvement in attack and defence. Occasionally his dummy half runs are ill timed but overall he looks far more committed week to week. Very nice to see.

Macca seems to be taking some more responsibility in attack without compromising his staunch defence in the middle. Cruel to be denied that 40 20 but fantastic that he's pulling that play out with regularity.

Milford had the kind of performance we've been looking for. Busting tackles, setting his runners up with aplomb, standing in tackles and offloading, plus a fantastic hit on Pearce. Hope he takes a shot of confidence from this and runs with it. Earn those $, son!

Props to Mead, he really made a good fist of his opportunity. Despite being smaller than most wingers I was particularly impressed by his ability to take a carry, accelerate over the advantage line and get a quick play the ball without letting the defence hold him up /carry him back.

Must admit I was quite surprised to see us so liberal with the offloads, particularly coming off our line. Seemed almost a conscious tactic, despite the risk? Perhaps they identified a tendency for the Roosters to back up early/reset the line a D take advantage?

Moga's first miss was 4 on two really, hard to stop that . I admit he was in no mans land, but I think he is over compensating for milf. He is sticking to close to him , has obviously been told to help him out .
I agree with you there. He has a long loo inside to make sure Milf is ok but that delay was enough.

It was the entire teams fault that try, not just Moga. I was in line with the Broncos D and it was a really slow play the ball - they had all the chance in the world to slide across harder before the ball got to Pearce who had 3 Broncos defenders between him the first receiver and Friend.

I was screaming at them to slide. While it was a poor effort by Moga, he isn't entirely responsible at all.

I think our best side might see Kahu and Oates on the Left and Roberts and Meade on the right. That said, props to Moga for improving as the game went on but I think he is lacking the one thing a centre really needs....vision. He really has been slightly responsible for half of our opponents tries in the last 3 weeks.

Does anyone else notice that Boyd has been quiet offensively at fb? Always safe and steady but with his skills, I think he can do more with the pill.

Great to see Macca getting better every week. Terrific effort. Gillette also had the best offensive game of the year. Finally hitting those holes hard again.

Nice to have a kicker that doesn't elevate my heart rate every time he kicks a conversion. Well done Kahu.

I guess we will soon see if Kodi has the goods at 7.

Surely this is a diversion. Guerra has been nothing but terrible this year. Knock ons. No effort at all.

Kahu is also a turnstile in D at centre . WCC ???? Atleast moge is an opposing figure, that whole left edge needs work in defense

Kahu knows how to draw and pass. He is a more dangerous attacking weapon than what Moga is.

We'll get the same defensively but we will at least get a better attacker.

Good to get the win, this new attacking structure was starting to click and was similar to 2015. Milf was firing and took over after Hunt's injury. I feel we can risk resting Hunt for the next two games against the Titans and the Rabbits and seeing how Niko goes. For the first time in ages we have a problem in the backline with Mead pushing for a position, do you put Oates in at center and Mead on the wing? We will have to wait and see what Bennett does. I am so filthy about Hunt's try being disallowed, 1. It wasn't forward and 2. That would of been valuable Fantasy points.

Have to wonder if it is the result of the ref's bloody tip sheets?- watch the inside ball from Milford...Ridiculous call can't see them getting it any other way.

Does anybody know if they played on the same side at the Titans? Mead is the Titans top tryscorer and Roberts was on fire there at centre - I'm wondering if they ever worked together? Maybe this could be a key combination for us.

I know Moga is copping it, I am one of the ones who thinks he is average. Don't hate him like some but I think Mead brings much more to our attack with speed and attitude. I was a Mead fan at the Titans and thought he was a great pickup when the Tits let him go to fit the over-rated Hayne. Moga just does not bring any spark or destructive game to our attack so let him go and put Mead on the wing. Kahu isn't a natural winger anyway so he can work at centre. I thought they were grooming Kahu to take Hodgos place anyway so move him in and give Moga some time to get better in reserves. He might bring some more attitude in the future but in the meantime Mead is too good to be playing reserves. The guy is the Titans record try scorer - proven track record has to count surely??

No more so than Moga has shown himself to be - If the left hand D needs work, and it does, then they can work on Kahu to make space for Mead. Mead is too good not to be in the team. We haven't had a real winger for years, Mead has the track record to be there and last night was a wake up call about team selections if you ask me. Most of the re-positioning worked well.
I thought Glenn brought much more as a solid starter - he has no impact off the bench. Sims and Sammy blasted them when they came on.

I love offloads, Parker was the king of the offloads in 2015 and we constantly had defences on the back foot - 2016 he stopped doing it, obviously under instruction?, and our attack was boring and predictable. Last night our attack was anything but and the Roosters were all over the place wondering what the hell was gonna happen next

Honestly, I did not see last nights win coming, nor did I see us scoring 32 points.

Very happy with that, but Moga definitely needs to work on his tackling in training. His 2 misses that led to tries were horrible, that could of lost us the game if we couldn't score. I like that he kept trying and didn't go into his shell. I'm not even going to get into the no try to Hunt decision, disgraceful.

Happy with the win but now we need consistency, we need to go on a little winning streak and gain some more confidence and build on this. It was a solid win last night but it's time to move on and look forward.

I think the calls to axe Moga are a bit premature. Sure Ferguson made him look ordinary , but then again Ferguson is pretty extraordinary . I think he does need to lift his intensity though . At times he just looked a yard off the pace of the game .
