Broncos defeat Roosters 32-8: Five things we learned
Peter Badel and Rikki-Lee Arnold, The Courier-MailApril 6, 2017 11:07pm
MOGA couldn’t handle it, so Mead did the heavy lifting and Thaiday’s good on the bench. Here’s what else we took from Brisbane’s victory.
1. TAUTAU Moga should be axed. Since a promising round-one debut for the Broncos, the hulking centre has been quiet and last night he was a turnstile in defence. Granted, he set up a late try, but he gifted the Roosters two four-pointers with feeble defensive efforts and also made a handling error. Jordan Kahu would be a better option at centre with David Mead a viable option on the wing.
2 — DAVID Mead was finally handed his Broncos debut and handled the occasion well. With Corey Oates ruled out with a groin injury, Mead played outside an erratic Moga to put in a solid first performance for Brisbane. He scored a try late in the match and also impressed with his running game, making 193m off 19 runs. With four tackle busts and three offloads on top of this, Mead did well to earn himself a recall next week.
3 — THE Broncos should persist with Sam Thaiday on the bench. While he is undoubtedly starting quality, Thaiday always gives Brisbane a major lift with his experience and energy off interchange. Coach Wayne Bennett made a late switch by putting Thaiday on the bench and the tactic worked, with the Maroons veteran scoring with his second touch of the ball.
4 — BRISBANE hooker Andrew McCullough is in his career-best form. Always one of the Broncos’ most reliable, McCullough was on fire against the Roosters, scoring the first try of the match out of dummy-half. He also broke Sydney’s spirit in the 57th minute with an outstanding try-saving ankle tap on Mitchell Pearce.
5 — MAROONS coach Kevin Walters says Aidan Guerra is an automatic selection for Origin next month, but the Roosters forward should not get too comfortable. While he put in a mammoth effort in defence and was solid in attack, he was far from the star of Sydney’s forward pack and did not have the desired impact when things were tough for his side. He is reliable, but he might need to take his game to another level before donning a Queensland jersey again.
