Round 8 - Broncos vs. Rabbitohs - Pre-Game discussion

Do you think Hodges will be able handle defending in the front line, though? He still isn't at 100%

as opposed to every other week when he defends in the front line? its only 1 spot infield from where he's defended all his career. probably a safer option.

Parker is playing exactly the same way whether he has the 10 or 13 on his jersey. He played well, but did nothing different yesterday from any other game this season. I wish people would get over this "Parker is playing out of position" fallacy.

Same thing with Kennedy. He was pretty good last night, tackled well (missed 3 of 34 tackles) and wasn't that bad running averaging 9 mtrs per run (9 runs). In comparison, Hannant (whom some people think should get the nod for a starting position) missed 4 of his 29 tackles and ran 8 times for just under 8 mtrs per run. I don't how much time each of them played, but it mustn't have been that different.

Granted, for his size, he doesn't run like a George Burgess or a JWH, but he's more of a worker than an impact player, and has always been.

I wish people would get over the fallacy that playing at prop does not impact on a players style. Since when has the props job been to provide attacking spark or set up other players ? Each position on the field has specific requirements and front rower means hard and straight hit ups to gain ground combined with hard as nails hitting in defence. Irrespective of your view Porthoz ,Parker won his Dally M in a different position, a position with a different set goal.

No way known Hook will blood a youngster at 5/8 against the Bunnies.

Logic says Barba to 5/8 and Maranta to fullback .... but we'll see what happens.

I'd think this is the most likely option. Maranta is very solid defensively, which he'll need to be with their aggressive kick chasing.

It's not ideal, but I'd rather Hodges at 5/8 than FB. More work defensively, but less strain on his legs.

As others have mentioned, I can't see them bringing Kahu or one of the young bloods in on short notice.

One positive is Copley coming back to the centres, I guess.

Yep, bit of a blonde moment there.

Let me rephrase. Do you think he will able to handle defending against the big boys in the middle? He doesn't defend against props regularly at centre and with the way his body is, I have my doubts as to whether he will come out unscathed when he has a 120kg George Burgess running at him all night long.

Interesting development, if true, re Hoffman. No doubt he'll be given until kick off to prove his fitness so we won't know Hook's plans till the 11th hour.

Would love to see Niko given a run for the hell of it (given we're outsiders to win this one, may as well blood a youngster).

If I had to guess, I'm thinking Maranta comes in at 5, Copley to 4, Hodges to 6 (or wear the 1 for the night) and Barba stays out the back.

Or do something a bit more organic like moving left edge defender Glenn into the 6 for the night, bring Lowrie off the bench. Apparently you don't need to know how to pass the ball so he'll be sweet.

Perfect chance to give an actual half a go in the 6 but instead Hook will rearrange the deck chairs to put our most injury prone players in a position where you need to do the most work and squeeze gumby Maranta on to the wing.

i think he'd be fine. alternatively defend reed or copley at "6" and keep hodges in his usual centre spot. regardless, these guys are all used to the up and back of defending in the line.

im really most concerned that hodges wont be able to get across/change directions/etc to grubbers and such in our ingoal which barba has been able to cover really well this year. i think its a massive risk.

i dont have the answer on who to play 6 but i'd much rather a straight swap in for someone who has been playing 6 in ISC. strasser. duncan paia'iua. whoever. lets not try to get too tricky here.

sides generally do not benefit from a major shuffle of positions. look at souths moving sutton to 13, walker to 6, etc. it just didnt work. the storm dont move billy slater to 6 because ben roberts got injured. they just find someone from their feeder to come in

These days the field is split into thirds in attack and defence. You have left side, middle and right side. Prop and lock in most structures like this play middle third. Parker whether he is in 10 or 13 always has played middle third. Meaning when he was named at lock he was essentially a third prop and was playing the same role now as he is now at prop.

exactly. "third" is not the same as the big boppers you have taking the hard straight hit ups. parkers best was always 3rd/4th out running a little wider where hte offloads provide opportunities for the outside bakcs. not hte middle 1st and 2nd run that is just about gaining straight metres.

If you were going to take a chance on a young half, you would have to go for Duncan P over Nikorima. someone who is playing 5/8 for an ISC club instead of fullback in the 20s

It's not just ports view. Many others too. The game has evolved, try to keep up

Heavens do not even contemplate playing Reed defending at 5/8th - we will have 50 put on us!!!!!!!!!!!

maybe just bring Copley in to 5/8th and Maranta onto the wing - only 1 change - and Copley can tackle as he will have to against Sutton and Inglis

I'd put Reed over Hoffman at 5/8 every day of the week but ideally I'd like to use the chance to get a new guy in

i honestly wouldnt mind gillett playing 6 this week if it werent for him doing so well at 13 lately. and the tries he's scored running straight off barba short balls.

again moving players around is not the way to go in my opinion
