Round 8 - Broncos vs. Rabbitohs - Pre-Game discussion

As much as I like Maranta and want to see him get opportunities, just bring in a half ffs Griffin. Here you are, given an opportunity to try out someone without hurting your pwecious Hoffman's feelings, don't blow it.

Ideal scenario:

Hoffman out injured
Barba moves to 5/8 and has a blinder
Hodges Moves to full back and has a blinder, and makes it through the game without injury.

Hoffman returns on the wing. Barba stays at 5/8 for the year.

Would prefer:

Barba moves to 5/8th, Maranta moves to FB....kills it, pushes Hoffman to the wing.

Absolutely ideal situation though:

Everyone stays where they are and someone from the lower grades comes in and kills it....pushes Hoffman to the wing where he becomes the Dally M: Winger of the year.

Here is a crazy concept.... Put whoever is playing best in the 5/8 in the lower division in for a run and leave everyone else in their best position. I know..... kind of daring and crazy.

Bat shit crazy if you ask me.

Hey guys, I think Hunt should kick to the sidelines to avoid Inglis.

Excellent tactic imo

merritt has been dropped. alex johnston will debut for souths

so maguire isnt scared of giving young kids a go.

Wow

If they are ever going to blood Duncan there won't be a better opportunity. The team is relatively set, playing well, and the current 6 has been derping it up. Literally all he has to do is not **** up and throw a pass and he is exceeding our expectations

as i said before - 1 change only - put Copley in at 5/8th - can tackle as he will be dealing with Sutton and Inglis - has always played left centre or wing so is used to that side and he can pass the ball - then simply put Maranta on the wing - and everyone else stays the same - yes i know we should be giving a go to the younger brigade but please not against the Bunnies monsters - they will destroy them and their confidence for the future - blood them against the sharks - is Kahu ok to play or not - maybe give him a run on the wing instead of Maranta and he and Copley can swap a bit in attack and defence

so you want to put another wing/center in 5/8 ... Great Idea ... how about we pick a 5/8 that has been playing well in the lower grades and give them a shot... namely Strasser or Duncan P.

So we are going from one wing/centre that has shown no playmaking ability to another? Awesome

You have obviously been watching a different bloke named Copely to me over the last 4 years or so - have you ever been to training and watched him throw the ball around and pass it and kick it - did you not watch him in the under 20's - you are under estimating his ability

and you want to blood a youngster up against the Burgess brothers - Sutton and GI - PLEASE GIVE ME A BREAK

A real cat amongst the pigeons scenario.

I can't say I'm a fan of the Barba to Five Eigth move, outside of his inside balls play, Barba has really struggled with the playmaking duties and I think he'd be a very easy target in defence. I also don't like the idea of playing Hodges at fullback, I don't think he can handle it for 80 and Souths would be one of the last teams you'd want to throw in a make-shift fullback given the quality of their kicking game.

Paia'Aua is the best short term prospect we have but I question whether he's physically ready to handle the demands of first grade. I don't think I've ever seen a 19 year old League player with more bandages and strapping plus his skill-set is still very raw. On top of that, I don't think he was really considered an option for the bulk of the pre-season and judging by the trial selections, seemingly was behind Nikorima & Strasser for the halves spot. I think he's better off developing in the ISC and spending more time in the senior squad, developing combinations.

I will say, I prefer Paia'Aua over Kodi because Duncan strikes me more as a team player which I believe is important element of a five eigth. It's just a matter of whether he's ready to take the next step.

So I'd go with the guy who appeared to be the first drop in the position - Strasser. I don't think he's a long term option or anything, but he's familiar enough with the structures and I believe if he follows a simple enough role of spreading the ball and helping Hunt with the long distance kicking game, he'd be a handy depth option.

Also calling shotgun in the SVRL.

Long time viewer first time poster here...

With respect, why does everyone assume Kahu should get a starting spot over one of the young up-coming halves...?

Like any sane person, I think it is ludicrous to play a strong ball runner who was deposed of his FB role for a lack of playmaking ability, in the halves! But wasn't Kahu always groomed as an outside back? Why assume he would be instantly better than Hoff?

Plus he is injury prone and inexperienced at NRL level... Am I missing something here?

At the start of the season I wanted an unproven half like Kodi, Taylor, Strasser etc... But if Hoffman is our most stable or best defensive option perhaps it is too late to mess with that (sadly).

Final thing for now - I would hate for Copely or Vidot to be forced out by anyone, including Hoffman - it is proving so refreshing to have two big, athletic wingers again - acting like extra forwards out of our own half.
Honestly I'd rather him at fullback with Barba at five-eighth, Hoffman on the wing, Copley at centre with Reed to 18th man. I'm not desperate to drop Reed though, and would be happy with a Hoffman-Barba straight swap too.

No! Hodgo should only play at fullback in the opposition 20! Not the whole fucking game!

Looks like I'll spend all night cringing every time he brings the ball back..
Many fullbacks dump kick returns off to their bigger wingers. Just off the top of my head Barba, Stewart and Bowen do this and routinely play games where they are only tackled 5-10 times.

I wish people would get over the fallacy that playing at prop does not impact on a players style. Since when has the props job been to provide attacking spark or set up other players ? Each position on the field has specific requirements and front rower means hard and straight hit ups to gain ground combined with hard as nails hitting in defence. Irrespective of your view Porthoz ,Parker won his Dally M in a different position, a position with a different set goal.
Except we moved into the 21st century and the lines are blurred.
Parker is definitely not playing as a classical prop, maybe you should pay more attention to what he does on the field, than to the number on his back...
