Sack Griffin/New Coach Discussion

Absolutely grilled Griffin was, I don't know what Gordy was going on about the pressure Bennett was facing, I don't know how for the life of me how he survived such an interview like that Bull Shark

How has he done a bad job? Ok he signed Norman for 450k and as much as I was glad to be rid of him, in this day and age 450k isn't that bad, especially to get someone to go to the two time spooners.

Peats looks to be an amazing signing too. I don't see how he has done a bad job tbh

This is the same bloke who played his part during the decline of the Broncos recruiting, thought Stephen Kearney had great vision as a coach, joined the Eels in early 2011 and helped sign Sandow to a 1.6 million dollar 4 year contract who produced an utterly dismal first season and has a lot of time to make up for. Peats I will grant but Norman has a long way to go to prove worth the money at any club.

This is similiar to the Hoffman in the halves argument. You don't really know who is better until you try. Unless we can get a seasoned coach like Bellamy, Hasler, Cleary almost all the options available are going to be a risk or untried. I don't think I've seen anyone say sack Hook and replace him with Kearney either but there you are putting those words in peoples mouths.

We can all be sure Kearney should never be head coach of the Broncos. With that in mind we need Hook to stay on for the remainder of the season, otherwise Kearney will get the job for the rest of the season. Clubs always get the assistant to be caretaker coach for the rest of the season after sacking a coach. A new full time coach never starts until the end of the current season.

And you are right, we don't know who will be better than Griffin until we try, but that doesn't mean we have to try with the first available candidate. There may be a better candidate to take a risk on than Walters. Thames we're saying is that we need to do a thorough search first.

Don't get me wrong, I would love Walters to have as successful coaching career with us as he did playing career. I just don't think we should rush into hiring a new coach without investigating all the options first.

If the board decide Walters is the best option, I will get behind him 100%

As far as Kevin Walters is concerned, I feel he should have been brought into the coaching ranks, not necessarily as head coach, but definitely to either replace Kearney or dedicated to working with our spine and attack in general, people may not have rated his head coaching past and that's fair enough, I'm still not convinced his head coach material myself but I feel it was definitely a missed opportunity on our part.

I don't think it would have mattered if Broncos approached him. Walters wanted to be a head coach at the time. I think the only reason he took the Knights job is because no one wanted him as a head coach and because Bennett was there..

The fact that the Broncos didn't approach him highlights the problems that exist at the club and it's not the only level where the club seems reluctant to chance its arm, you will never know where a player/coaching staff stands if you never approach them, when Kevin Walters announced he was leaving he did say he was returning to Brisbane, the opportunity was there to have discussions, the club didn't and it was only after that did he sign with the Knights. You may be right, he may have still ended up at the Knights, doesn't mean you shouldn't try.

For mine Norman has been worth the $450k so far, he's played his role virtually pefectly, compliments Sandow & Hayne.

I think Eels made a smart move signing him.

He takes pressure off Sandow and Hayne. I think Hayne wasn't at his best last year because the halves weren't doing the job and he was left to try and do it all on his own. Now that Norman and Sandow are performing, he can focus on doing what he does best.

It's similar to 2009 when the halves and the rest of the back line started stepping up, Hayne's form just skyrocketed..

fighting irish, hooks use of the bench is abysmal and fair enough criticising him for that. but don't criticise him for wasting an interchange we are lucky to use half our interchanges

Kearney doesn't have to take over, providing we've got anybody else we're looking at.

If Griffin is sacked mid-season (and doesn't finish the season). Kearney WILL be the caretaker coach ... there is no doubt about it. put money on it

and even if the board decides on a new coach before the end of the season ... it is doubtful he will start before the end of the season. (although he will probably start looking our our roster and will have a hand in recruiting and retention)

Hell the board may even decide that Kearney should replace Griffin permanently.

Who cares about salaries.

Broncos won two comps and never missed the finals while Nolan was with recruiting and he set up the Elite Player program.

How did he play a part in the decline of broncos recruiting? he was sacked at the end of 2010 FFS. Here was there for most of the bennett era and responsible for all our recruitment then. The decline in broncos recruiting happened after he left and recruitment become part of Gee's job.

As for Sandow when he was signed he was in great form at the bunnies and you cant really blame a recruitment manager for not having a crystal ball to see that he was going to throw is life into disarray through drinking and gambling. All of parras best recruits have been because of Nolan and Bennett obviously held him in high esteem seeing he was here for so long.

I'm just going to throw this out there, Kearney is our defensive coach right? So he is more than likely the one responsible for our improvement in defense? I don't remember who he had at the Eels but he definitely didn't have the team they have now. Kearney definitely is getting some unwarranted criticism here.

and the defense we had when Griffin was the defensive coach was much better than we have now ... he just can't coach attack for shit

Our defence is not that great. We let teams get easy meters in the middle of the field but we scramble well on our goal line.

I doubt very highly that they would sack Griffin mid-season with no replacement lined up. If we sign an assistant coach though, I daresay they would come straight over.
