Sack Griffin/New Coach Discussion

While I agree Hook really has to go as head coach as much as I want the guy to succeed, the reasons Big Pete pointed out are why I'd love for him to stick around at least in recruiting or a nurturing talent role. Unfortunately head coaches tend to disappear from clubs after getting sacked.

My controversial 5c worth.

I find the Broncos management/coaching incredibly conservative. The game plans since the superstars left have been incredibly conservative on the whole. The coaching style is incredibly conservative save for a few glimpses when Hook took a leaf out of Hasler's book then let the wind blow it away.

As I see it, even back in the Bennett days, the Broncos relied on superstars to run the show on field. They have gone with Lockyer.

The results since then prove my case.

We are in for more of the same. We can't even construct a game around Barba, personal issues or not. In fact as others have posted, his form may well be in part a function of a game plan which effectively gives him no opportunities or options.

We play great footie in spits and dribbles and, as I keep saying, our famous slide has already started happening, only 5 games earlier than previously.

Hook is too conservative for mine and the lack of a genuine organizing superstar shows our fragility so fucking clearly, now made worse by crippling the key element of on field leadership in the halves by playing with only one, instead of 2.

And finally, we don't a points scoring machine so much as an organizing leader in the halves. Under Lockyer, so many players shone brightly. Now, they glimmer, or are mere shooting stars. You can see it. As soon as the team hits a roadblock, things fall apart.

Apologies if it's already been mentioned, but what does everyone think of Neil Henry? As opposed to Walters, fur example.

He had mixed results with the Cowboys, to be sure, but they're like that under most coaches.

A new coach is going to make minimal difference until we recruit someone to organize the team and lead it through thick and thin.

Lockyer's retirement says it all.

Its funny that some people expect that to be Milford. Though I wouldn't be surprised if Griffin tried to turn him into one and kill his running game...like what he seems to be doing with Barba

Totally agree Alec

The best teams have organizers and leaders who can use their VISION in and through established structures.

We have players with at least some vision: Hunt, Macca, Gillett and Hodges, but then we have suspect structures.

I'd rather a player like Cam Smith to Milford any day, and Hasler over Hook any day

IMO those players will be Hunt & McCullough. Milford isn't being recruited to do it - he's being recruited to allow Hunt to do it.

bingo!

Hunt and Macca can't do it without a decent organizing 5/8.

Hunt and Macca can't do it without solid, well worked structures.

Milford has shown me ZIP about being anything but a ball runner. In fact, I reckon Barba in 2012 was all over Milford in terms of skill set, although I will of course admit that Milford hasn't had a chance to show he's an organizing leader and play maker.

Barba on the other had ... well ... will we end up with 2 ball runners when we need a lot more?

Apart from which, Milford is still only a wet dream

An organizing five eight? So hunt isn't organizing from halfback? How many organizers do you want?

Hunt is burdened with basically all responsibility for providing an attacking spark, he has no time to organise right now. Have Milford there as a foil, to take the defensive heat off Hunt, and Hunt can then marshall his troops better and have the mental resources to stick to the game plan.

I agree with this statement.

Milford coming (hopefully) will help create a lot of doubt in the opposition in defence, and hopefully lead to Hunt having more time/options to create plays.

I think Hunt can be a pretty special halfback if he can get some support from his fellow playmakers.

does anyone really expect that Griffin will still be the coach by the time Milford arrives ... The Broncos board won't settle for another poor season like last year, unless things pick up and fast, it will only be a matter of time before hook gets the hook.

p.s. the hook nick name must be one of those ironic names, because he never seems to give anyone the hook from first grade lol

The good thing about Griffinball, is that you don't even need much organisation, at least no more than someone suffering from dementia could provide.

Tackle 1: Kick return or a hit up, 1 pass off the ruck
Tackle 2: Hit up, 1 pass off the ruck
Tackle 3: Hit up, 1 pass off the ruck
Tackle 4: Hit up, 1 pass off the ruck
Tackle 5: Second man play, back rowers as decoys.
Tackle 6: Kick to the corners
