Season Opener: Broncos Vs. Cowboys - Match Thread

Well, first game of the season and it's already heart attack central!

I suppose that's what having a young team will do to you, we didn't shutdown the game, too busy fart-arsing around and the Cowboys took advantage. Only first game of the season though, so not too much to be stressed about.

Opening 15 minutes or so, Cowboys were right on top. Exploited our poor marker defence with some incisive running from dummy half. From then on, till about the 60th minute, it was all Broncos.

I don't want to go overboard with praise, but Corey Norman definitely has 'something'. He was composed throughout, didn't let the error go to his head. Nice work fella. If i had one criticism, perhaps he could have passed a bit more when we did the second man play.

Corey Parker was my MOTM. He made 49 tackles and 15 runs for 115m. Also landed some very difficult kicks, which proved to be a crucial part of our victory.

I wasn't expecting much from Gillett, but he was excellent. Surprised me. Got through a lot of work, and is a quite handy runner of the ball.

Kenny and Anderson stepped up, did their bit. We need that every week. icon_thumbs_u

Having a winger that's quicker than Usain Bolt is such an advantage. Went crazy when Kemp scored the matchwinner!!!

Great to get the season off to a winning start.

Ning, I thought they had us on the fringes moreso than through the middle, Our right side looked very weak early on.

It seemed to me that they were running it up the middle for the first few tackles, then would quickly spread it wide and catch us off-guard.

They had their first receiver regularly sweep around the back to switch the point of attack and they caught our markers out a lot. It was good play. They had us back pedalling.

Round 1 so I won't be too critical... good on the boys for the win. It is indeed a very young and raw side. Best not to ask for too much this year I reckon.

Very interesting to see how the Broncos go without superstars.

Well done to the boys. Last try was a fist pumper!

very happy with norman, anderson and gillet.

in addition to the players being wrapped in previous posts, winterstein was good too -- but did he get injured? if so, is it serious?

our defence and enthusiasm went to sleep in the second half, but the cowboys also got lucky with two of their tries. thurston was great in the second half though.

if the backs keep this up, will be interesting times ahead when hodges and yow yeh are back fit and in form, who to drop?

Anyone know what happened to Winterstein?

I was waiting for one of the commentators to give an injury update, but all they ever said was that Winterstein didn't come out for the second half.

What an exciting opening to the season!!

Very happy with 60 minutes of the game. Heart attack stuff when they levelled it but nobody can deny we deserved the win. We just couldn't get the ball back when the Cowboys were in their purple patch.

Everyone played well but I thought the stand outs were Kenny and Parker. Kenny in particular early on was fantastic, taking 2 hitups per set on plenty of occasions. Parker as has been mentioned in this thread worked very hard throughout the entire game and goal kicking was very good.

I've been to plenty of Origin games but no amount of noise made at those games comes close to the noise when Kemp was sprinting away down the sideline to score the last try. Outstanding atmosphere, and I think the atmosphere at the game was Origin-like throughout.

All in all very happy to get the 2 points, great to see Norman start his career so well and young guys Beale and Gillett were impressive as well.

Well done Broncos icon_thumbs_u

Probably the absolute best moment you can achieve upon coming back to a club.

Kempy's back!!!!!

Also loved the badge grab from Kemp. That try meant a lot to him. Welcome home son.

How the fcuk did the hapless New Zealand Warriors cut him loose last season ? Just reinforces my long held view that Ivan Cleary has absolutely no idea whatsoever how to coach at NRL first grade level.

He is a total incoherant myth imo.

Wonder if the atmosphere had something to do with you sitting with the real fans in the so-called outer Jeb and not the sandwich eating, chardonay sucking Western stand fans icon_thumbs_u

Fantastic first up performance, yes we fell away for 25 - 30 minutes and that certainly is still a concern as it seems to be a hangover from last year, but considering the youngsters in our side and lack of experience I will forgive them as long as we learn from it.

As for the performances of the players for mine Wally, Kenny and Parker were the standouts. Very very happy with Norman looks like being a gem not afraid to boss Locky and others around and seems to have a bit on whoever was our fullback last year (forgotten him already [icon_wink ). Was also impressed with Beale in the centres, shame he had to move to the flank for the second half (would suggest Winters strained a Hammy setting up the last try of the first half when he stumbled) and also liked the look of Gillett.

Of the others Israel looks like he will finally step up to the plate this year, great to have Kempy back where he belongs finishing tries in maroon and gold, Locky was solid without being overly flashy but that was because Wally ran the show, and Macca will be the next Qld hooker when Smith finishes or if injured.

Great to have the footy back, great first up win with plenty of room for improvement (fix the fadeout Ivan) icon_thumbs_u
