Re: Finals Week Two Discussion
If the Bulldogs fans are serious, they'll recognise their team was far from perfect themselves and were shown plenty of leniency in the ruck.
Yes, the Evans try was a joke but ultimately I never felt as if the Bulldogs were the better team at any stage. Even when they were winning the physical contest early, their work with the ball left plenty to be desired and it seemed like only a matter of time before the Roosters would weather the storm. The biggest problem with Canterbury was their execution and timing. The work from dummy half prevented the Bulldogs from ever getting any ascedency in the ruck and I thought the work from Mbye and Reynolds wasn't up to par. Their attack was very messy, with players standing in each other's way, accepting passes they were never committed to taking. They needed to be more patient with the ball, back their power and take advantage of the space when it would inevitably eventuate. Unfortunately it didn't work out.
On the other hand, it was business as usual for the Roosters. I thought they might struggle after suffering their first loss in 13 games, but to their credit, they bounced back and led the Bulldogs for the majority of the contest. I thought the forwards were very strong. Guerra and Cordner in particular made some great surges down the fringes and provided the Roosters with the impetus to score their points. While in the backs, SKD and Ferguson were a real handful for the Bulldogs defence and ensured that the Roosters were able to maintain their momentum during the second half.
However, the real difference for mine was Maloney and Hastings in the halves. I was impressed with Hasting's composure last week. He absorbed a lot of the Melbourne Storm's attack and didn't look out of his depth in spite of his inexperience. On the other hand, I thought Maloney was quite poor and if the Roosters were to win, he had to really step up. To his credit, I think he was close to the best player on the park and his form helped Hastings find another gear. For mine, it brings into question whether an underdone Pearce is even needed for the Prelim Final. After suffering a hamstring injury against the Broncos in Round 24, it will be interesting to see how he goes first game back in a sudden death Prelim Final in enemy territory at a ground he hasn't historically performed well on. If it was up to me, I'd consider playing him off the bench and starting with Hastings. That way, he can come into the game when fatigue has set and can utilise his running game which is a very underrated aspect of his play.
Back to the referees and honestly I struggle to understand why Cecchin was selected for this game. I thought out of all the referees last week, he was by far the worst referee of the bunch as the Sharks/Rabbits game was riddled with baffling calls one after the other. I question his capacity to be assertive and make common sense calls at key moments. While the Kane Evans try was a major talking point, I thought there were a number of infringements in the ruck that were let go which resulted in a very scrappy late and opening period to the contest. Has Cecchin correctly penalised the players, I believe the quality of the contest would have improved exponentially, but the referee let the players get away with too much.
