Tardy Blues brush bushfire kids

Well if there realy is as many League fans in QLD than there is in NSW, then that proves our point about the game down there dying at the moment doesn't it? If we have nowhere near as much population, yet can conjure up just as many fans, what does that say about the game down there?? Not much doing down in NSW to bring in new fans allowing the game to grow??

There is more to NSW than just Sydney, FYI.

Excuse for what? NSW rarely have problems filling ANZ Stadium. In fact, in the last 8 outings at ANZ Stadium for Origin, we've averaged a crowd of 76, 052 per game. (and on 2 occasions we've sold it out)

Well according to your stats it seems you do have a problem filling the ground - only 2 times of 8 it's been sold out... I think that's a pretty woeful strike rate in anyone's language

How is that bad? What, just because we don't sell it out every game like you guys? What a stupid logic. Queenslanders need to get their hands of their dicks every time QLD sell out an origin. If we had a 50,000 capacity stadium, we would sell it every game too so what's your point? [icon_shru

The point is not that we continually sell out a 50,000 seat stadium for Origin. The point is that the demand for tickets for Origin games played in Brisbane is always so high, that if we had a stadium with the capacity of the one in Sydney there is a very high likelihood that we'd still sell all tickets - despite the smaller population in Brisbane\QLD (we'd definately be selling out more than 25% of the time anyway - but that's not overly difficult [icon_wink ).

I would say just about every NRL game played in NSW attracts an ordinary crowd

Yeah? Compared to what? Why don't you do something intelligent and actually put it in perspective and compare the the crowds from the last 10 years. Ahhhh that's right, because then it will prove you wrong![/quote:alx60xrw]

I'm not comparing to anything. I just think it's poor that the so-called home of rugby league very rarely sees a game played in front of a crowd of 15,000 or more.

You sound like you are getting a bit worked up Rock [icon_razz1

Have to take into account scheduling as well.

Eg - Souths get lots of Monday night games, the 5:30pm games on Saturdays can be very difficult to get to if you work in retail etc.

I think the issue is that when the teams in Sydney play other teams in Sydney the crowds just don't cut it. Regardless of the teams they support - there are still two teams from the same area playing. That alone should be able to draw a bigger crowd than the averages present. Sure, Brisbane only have one team to support, and we only have on stadium, but people come from all over Brisbane to see their team play. We average 37,000 or something per game - all of which have been Friday nights bar Mother's day.

Perhaps some of the Sydney teams should look for smaller stadiums. They aren't going to sell out ANZ or SFS anytime soon. Save themselves a bit of money on venue costs.

Hey Rock...

What about the series where Queensland has two Origin games and NSW has one - and Qld sells out 100 000 tickets in a flash, all gone shortly after going on sale... and NSW fails to sell out it's sole game, with less than 80 000 in attendance.

Got a response or theory for that?

Everyone down here wishes this were the case. There is nothing like going to Leichhardt oval on a Sunday afternoon when it's sold out to watch a game. It's awesome. Players love it and fans love it.

The thing is stadiums like ANZ in particular actually offer financial incentives for clubs to play their games there! The clubs are guaranteed to make a certain amount for playing there, whereas I'm lead to believe Wests will make **** all money even on a sell-out at Leichhardt.

But it's nothing new.....it's been like that for 100 years. So how can you say it's poor? It's the norm, it's what is expected, so how can you judge upon that?

That there is exactly the problem with rugby league, particularly in NSW. Their view is "if that's what we've always got then that's what we should always aim for".

You haven't thought that maybe crowds should be growing 100 years on?

It's like a quote Wayne Bennett loves. If you always do what you always did, you'll always get what you always got.
NSW clubs rely on their leagues clubs. They rely on poker machines.
They rely on their core little group of misfits that will throw bottles or tackle a referee.

Rather than working on a new way to attract local fans, they take games away and those same nitwits follow them.
Instead of marketing within their own districts to try and get everyone interested in their club and wanting to come to the footy, they'll look for some gimmick to attract fans - eg, double header, or spend $100 on a poker machine and we'll have group sex with you.

NSW clubs, with a couple of exceptions, are poorly run, amateurish, incompetent and a drain on the resources of the clubs that are actually doing well.

As for your claim that the Broncos should sell out Suncorp Stadium every week, I actually agree with you. Crowds in Brisbane have never been the same since Super League. They've been better since we went back to Suncorp Stadium but IMO still not good enough. The Broncos are, in a way, like the Sydney clubs thinking "Well, this is better than we were getting 10 years ago so we must be alright". Seriously, the Broncos are the best, most marketable sporting franchise in Australia and there should be a frickin' waiting list to get memberships.

There's not. And that comes down to apathy and complacency from the Broncos organisation.

It's also notable now that the Gold Coast Titans' crowds have dwindled this year compared to last season. Seem to get 16000 or so on average at their boutique stadium.

The problem isn't unique to Sydney. It's just Sydney is the most graphic example of rugby league's total and utter incompetence.

Seriously Rock, if you are so easily able to go "meh" about this public relations nightmare generated by the NSW State of Origin team then you simply don't give a **** about rugby league.

The whole reason QLD and NSW alternately sacrifice an Origin home game to take to Melbourne is to promote the game down there. Getting to meet the players and get a feel for the game is how they can sell the game in this foreign market.

If the players and team management of NSW care so little about it as to arrive 2 hours late to such a function, why the **** are Queensland bothering to give up their home ground advantage? We might as well just say "**** you Melbourne, you're not worth bringing rugby league to" and we can all get on with it.

Paint it anyway you like, but Bellamy and his entourage have **** the game over, yet again. Honestly, if it's not manipulating the rules to make the game as boring as possible, it's simply neglecting the grassroots.

He's a ****.

+ 1000000000 Couldn't have said it better. I would say the same thing if had of been Qld.

Simple solution to these problems, get real business people with an understanding of how to achieve a consistent profit into all these clubs because at the moment they are run by fans and ex-players who wouldn't know how to generate revenue lost by poker machines or smoking laws or just generally by a fairly static Sydney market. The players are more professional now (for the most part lol) it sh#ts me to tears that most of the Sydney clubs are not run more professionally than they were in the "good ol' days".

I love this QLD v NSW beef.

Personally, I think this has a lot to do with Bellamy. Like someone mentioned he certainly has this aura of arrogance surrounding him, you can see it by the way he presents himself. My guess is as good as yours but reading between the lines, I reckon Bellamy knew they were going to be late but he decided to put his (and the teams) need first, simple as that. Furthermore, Wallace/Camps/Farah didn't even go because he wanted to train with them further. Poor form IMO, but I wouldn't go crying rivers about it. Still, bad call from Bellyache.

Yeah your right and when you consider he is the coach of Melbourne you would think he would know how important it is to promote the game to as many kids as possible down there.
