The Ashes 2010-2011

On another forum I visit, the Poms have been banging on about how we're exactly like they were pre-2005. Chopping and changing, selecting players out of nowhere.

You know what, they're exactly right.

When I was growing up, the Australian cricket team was a formidable opponent, now we're a joke. It's embarrassing.

Someone needs to sort it out.

AUSTRALIA'S selectors have hit back at claims they are reactively chopping and changing the bowling attack, revealing that Mitchell Johnson had been scheduled to miss the Adelaide Test before the Ashes began.

Johnson was dreadfully out of form in the opening Test in Brisbane, and was seemingly dropped for the second game, but that was not the case, said new full-time selector Greg Chappell. He revealed that the hectic schedule of five Tests in seven weeks led the selectors to devise a rotation strategy.

''We didn't plan for Mitch to struggle in Brisbane, but certainly we had made plans beforehand to leave him out of the second Test because we felt the conditions would have suited Peter Siddle, Ryan Harris and Doug Bollinger,'' Chappell told the Herald.

That is easily the worst drivel I've ever read in any so called "professional" news publication. Those selector nuffies really are pathetic.

Cricket world has now turned completely ... we are now officially England. Dropping simple catches, batting collapses on pitches that are like M1 & chopping and changing the makeup of the side. God help us

It's so true it's not funny. It's looking like the 80s all over again except at the moment we don't have a 'follow me' type leader in the AB mould

whilst the selectors and Cricket Australia are doing a fine job in destroying cricket in Australia I do feel that the talent just isn't around at the moment. Losing is made harder when we continue to pick the wrong sides without ever looking to the future. I look forward to seeing a very young Aussie test team in the next few years and watching them develop into a great test side.

Agreed beads.

There was a really good article in the Courier Mail that made the same point.

There is a lot of quality kids coming through around the 17-20 year old mark so the future looks bright. I think the biggest issue for the future is the captaincy after Punter. Clarke has been anointed captain very early on and has never really been supported by Australia or it seems the team. Problem is there is very little around in the way of captaincy potential in the test side now. Cameron White gets his name thrown around but there is a reason he can't even make the side. I also have heard a bit about Watson being the next Captain, this makes me LOL just because.

Tim Paine is captaining the PM's XI apparently allegedly because they wanna have a good long look at his leadership attributes. Interesting to say the least.

Maybe we are more like the West Indies than England.
Maybe our kids have other avenues to pursue rather than standing out in the sun waiting for a bowl.
The Windies kids have morphed to basketball and ours seem to be going to skateboarding or tattoo parlours.

I have heard this rumour before, Paine has good leadership qualities so he could be an option if Clarke fails. We really do need to get Paine in the side he is an outstanding talent and ready for test cricket.

I find that plain insulting, we are not stupid if you were going to rest him just come out and say it at the time.

The way they are going with selecting we could ning getting a call up (no offence ning just pointing out the obscurity of beer)

Apparently this song will be unleashed by the Barmy Army in Perth. To 'Don't Look Back in Anger'.

Slip inside Ricky Ponting’s mind
He’s trying to find
Some new players to play

He wants to play his older team
But that’s just a dream
They’re too old to play

He said he’d start a revolution in his head
But he’s been through all the players A to Z
Now there’s just a summertime of doom
If he loses the Ashes race
He is going to lose his place
Losing three would simply tear his heart out

So Ricky can wait
Shane Warne is too late
And there’s no Glenn McGrath
Gilchrist’s had his day
And don’t look back to Langer
He cannot play

That's brilliant.

Yeah, not a bad move to test him out. The 'unofficial' anointing of Clarke as Ponting's successor years before it would ever happen was ridiculous and has done no one, including Clarke himself, any favours at all.

Last time round we had several candidates, so it'd be good if we had more than one option when Ponting gives it away or gets the tap on the shoulder.

I did suggest that Clarke would become the new Kim Hughes.
Pleanty of talent but judged poorly by his peers.

Yeah good to see Paine given a chance, Clarke will still be given the Captaincy IMO but CA is just making plans in case it all falls to crap Paine could be next in line.

Yep.

It'll be interesting to see how Clarke goes when he gets the gig full time. For me, Clarke's better points are that he appears to be a more tactically sound and thinking Cricketer than Punter, and also that he'll have no problems telling the players a few truths that they may not want to hear at times - and piss off a few of the more precious ones in the process. Not to mention less of the favouritism, although Punter has set the bar incredibly high.

But the sign of a good captain is one that can do all those things yet still command the respect of the players and have them unite under his leadership. That's what may make or break Clarke in the end and is probably the issue that is under most dispute at the moment. We'll wait and see.

As has been said, good to have a backup or two in case Clarke comes out on the bad side of that situation.

Looks like Australia's going into this match sober.

Good move, I'd back a fourth quick to take more wickets than Beer.
