Wayne Bennett quits Knights... Is he coming back?

Tallis is another who thinks it would be a step back for us to sign Bennett.

Here is one quote from his article in the courier mail this morning.

We all know Benny doesn’t say much and when he does say something, we should listen. I reckon the message from his media conference when he announced he was leaving the Knights early was that he might not be up for the fight any more.

He said he was looking for a “challenge” and there’s the crux of the whole matter for me.

Everyone knows what’s happened at Newcastle this year

There were the off-field distractions of Russell Packer being jailed and Willie Mason going for drink-driving, then there were a few bad injuries followed by the terrible injury to Alex McKinnon.

I would have thought there was no greater challenge than staying there and turning the Knights around and if Bennett was truly up for a challenge, he would have stayed.

Instead, he’s walking away.

Everyone knows my position re: Bennett returning but I will say this, if what Tallis says is true and he is no longer up for the fight, the he should retire now. And if he is not prepared to do that, he can at least do the club he help build a favor and stay the **** away.

We don't need a coach who is not prepared to fight.

Foordy, I know you're vehemently against Bennett joining the club and for fair reasons but Gordie has been talking down Bennett ever since he got benched against the Cowboys in 2004.

Cowboys fans still haven't forgiven him for his role in the Cowboys rejecting his offer to join the club in 2009. Was apart of their board and basically convinced the board he wasn't the right man for the job.

Probably set the Cowboys back a decade.

SEEMS TO ME THAT PART OF THE BRONCOS DOWNWARD SPIRAL WAS IN BENNETS TIME WHEN HE GOT RID OF PETRO AND SIGNED CLINTON AND SIMS AND WE ALL KNOW HOW WELL THEY WENT.
HE HAS HAD HIS TIME, GRIFFIN IS GOING OK, ALL WE NEED IS THE RECRUITMENT PEOPLE TO RECRUIT SOME BETTER PLAYERS, WHICH THEY DON'T SEEM TO HAVE BEEN DOING?

A mate of mine who has a cousin at ST Merge (football staff) tells me the Tigers have made a big offer for WB. Unconfirmed from any source, flame away if you must

If only you were this animated during your post game interviews, Anthony.

Interesting. I heard on Fox Sports this morning that the Tigers have apparently told Potter that they will get rid of him if they do not make the top 8. So WB to Tigers could be a solid rumour??

SORRY Wayne, we no longer need you.
This is the blunt message Broncos players delivered master coach Wayne Bennett on Wednesday when they stood united in support of Anthony Griffin.

Those same players can all but secure Griffin’s future with a string of victories and are adamant a three-game losing streak is their fault, not his.
Griffin is contracted until the end of next season but if the Broncos fail to make the eight or limp out of the finals early, he will not survive the end of season review.

Departing Newcastle Knights coach Wayne Bennett says he still has the desire to continue his career and will make a decision over where his future lies soon.
On the back of a 12th place finish, Broncos officials want to see he has improved the side significantly this year.
However, if the Broncos want Bennett next season, and it is understood there are officials in the club who are open to the idea, they must decide Griffin’s future within a month.
The Knights coach will not negotiate with a club that has a coach already on the books.

If the players have any say, Griffin will survive regardless of whether Bennett wants to join Red Hill.
“The boys want Hook here and I want him to stay here so everyone has to stand up this week,” halfback Ben Hunt told The Courier-Mail.
“He’s not the one out there. Sometimes the coaches get hard done by, they aren’t the ones out there missing tackles and letting tries in.

Quensland legend Steve Renouf has called on master coach Wayne Bennett to come home to the sunshine state after it emerged he would leave the Newcastle Knights at season's end, with a return to the St George Illawarra Dragons on the table.
“Hook is contracted here and we’re happy with that.”
The Broncos face the in-form Warriors on Saturday night, hoping to end a losing streak that began with a loss to New Zealand in Auckland last month.
Co-captain Corey Parker launched an impassioned plea for Griffin to stay, stating his coaching ability should not be in question despite the Broncos inconsistent form.
“It really bugs me,” the veteran lock said.

“I realise the industry is a results-driven industry but I can assure you on behalf of myself and (co-captain) Justin (Hodges) that the coach has got an enormous amount of support from the playing group.
“We back him 100 per cent.
“He’s really transparent and genuine in how he goes about his business.
“From the other side of the fence that’s refreshing.
“He’s never tried to sugar coat anything. He’s black and white, there’s no grey, and that’s one of his greatest traits.
“What Wayne has done here and what he’s done in his career has been amazing.
“But Wayne left in 2008. We’re in 2014 and we’re still talking about Wayne.
“I’ve got the utmost respect for Wayne and talk to him regularly but Wayne is not here. Hook is, and the respect he’s got within the playing group and organisation here is of the highest quality.”

This is how they're playing for a coach they allegedly like. Imagine how they'd be going under a coach they dislike...

I have no doubt Hook is a good leader of men, but he needs people around him to do the actual footy thinking...

For ***** sake, keep drinking his kool aid then guys. See where it gets us in the future. It's not his fault you guys aren't doing well on the field but it is his selections causing you to play like you have no idea out there.

Absolutely nothing will change under Wayne Bennett. Griffin is basically a carbon copy.

The play the same style of footy, make the same type of head scratching selections etc.

You know who else nothing will change under? Anthony Griffin. I didn't say sign Bennett up either.

Yeah I really think what has let Hook down the most is who he has around him.

Agreed. I hope Griffin sees out his deal. People forget that Bennett had Bellamy as an assistant coach for a lot of years. He said in his book that Bellamy was hard to replace after he went to the Storm. I remember reading somewhere as well that Henjak played an important role in developing the game plan to upset the Storm in the '06 grand final.

Having smart, capable people around you cannot be underestimated, imo.

That's true and that's why I don't want Griffin as coach either

Griffin would be the best coach ever to play under.. you never have to train hard, he never yells at you or gets remotely angry, you only have to remember 1 set play, and you get to eat more and become fat... who wouldn't want to play under him?
