NEWS Why Haas Rejected 6m Offer

Any of those guys hang around other club influences at the time?

That's uncontrollable, all the Broncos can worry about is making a strong club/team so Haas and all players are happy and want to be there until at least 24 and hopefully beyond.

Worrying about his friends maybe trying to make him leave early or after his contract is wasted.

You can't talk to a player about the years he is under contract. Anyone can talk to Payne about '25 and beyond but they can't talk to him about '22, '23 or '24. He can't sign anything until end of '24 to go somewhere else.
Yeah they can't, but it's completely legal to say we'll give you all the money in the world for 25 on the record and to say leave your contract off the record.

I’m not sure people are worried as much as they are just fucked off with this constant bullshit.

But its not illegal.
It's against the rules to entice a player to break early. if the discussions are about '25, no problems - but you know as well as we do that Wielder isn't writing nor 'hinting' about '25. He has insinuated that unless we pay the guy early than '25, he will be a 'problem'.

I agree he's worth it, but the whole situation is a terrible look and of course News will just lap it up.

But the Broncos still control that- he can walk in there and say I want a release and the Broncos can say no.

He can't just run out on Sunday in a Eels jumper.

The issue is how do you prove it. Say its the Rorters. He goes into Origin camp with Teddy, Angus, Keary and Radley. They casually tell him what Uncle Nick can do for him and get him while chatting informally. How do you police that. Or he has a coffee one day with Politis for some reason. We all know whats going to be happening, but no way of proving it.

Payne is a great player but coming in and asking for a million a year is just stupid. He may be individually great and a once in a generation prop but that's the thing, he is a prop. He is not winning us games on his own, he has to realize that if he wants to win a comp the club needs to share the money around to sign and retain other good players. He would have to be one of the top payed players already, how much of the cap does he thinks he deserves.

Have any of premiership teams in the last decade put more than 750-850 down on props?

Kent has come out and said Payne has spoken to the bulldogs and said he wants $1m and Gould told him he’s not worth it.
I don’t believe it.
Tigers on the other hand would give him $1.4m so I guess that is his market rate and we should pay him that instead

Wait? Are you saying Payne wanted to go to the Dogs and was offering himself to them for a million?

I'm not going to get bent up about this shit until something happens, but there is no smoke without fire imo. My personal thoughts are he has an over inflated opinion of himself and his own importance. He's got a fantastic contract for a bloke was lucky he wasnt sacked by the club. If he tries to break what is an excellent contract then i hope we let his career rot for 3 years.

Not me, but yes, Kent tonight has said;
“He has already met with Canterbury, asked for a million dollars, Canterbury just said no, not worth it” then went on to say that Gould has said he does not believe he is a million dollar a year player.

I don’t actually believe he’s met with Canterbury, but hey, it wouldn’t surprise me.
I actually think Kent is siding with us, and the panel then went on to say the club should stick strong etc.

If true, I’d say Payne and his new management team are trying to make it public knowledge that he wants out/will leave the club if he can get the $1m a year.
As I said earlier I’d love for the Broncos to come out and ask questions as to why he is *potentially* talking to other clubs whilst under contract until 2024.
I wonder what Paynes team mates are making of this..

He probably feels unlucky that he wasn’t sacked

Payne's agent's job is to get him the most money he can. Payne considers that's what he's paying his agent commission to worry about, and he doesn't want to be lumbered with talking about it. Fair enough.

Part of that process is going to have to be his agent shopping him around other clubs to gauge his market value, and that process is going to get back to us through the media. None of this means Payne will actually join another club, regardless of whether they outbid the Broncos, or some other club he'd be happy to join.

Until Payne shows his hand there is no way we can predict where he'll be in five years time. If that were possible no other club would be bidding. This is how negotiation works. Both parties need to be able to walk away from the table. Those are the stakes.

He probably only has a few clubs he'd be prepared to sign with. Maybe one is the Broncos. Or maybe he'd like to get away. If he wants to stay in SEQ, he has three clubs to choose between. If they'll pay the price. Or maybe he'd like to take a punt on getting a premiership ring and move to one of the frontrunners. Again, we can't tell.

Throughout this process Payne is acting sensibly. He does not owe the Broncos any more than to serve out his current contract. He's well and truly put in as much effort as any player in the NRL. We can't say he bludged off us.

We really just have to leave him be. It's his future. We have him now. And we have his 100%. What more could we demand of him?
