Josh McGuire signs with Cowboys - Immediate Switch

That's an incredibly stupid answer mate, you're better than this. If you don't play football, you actually couldn't possibly understand the ins and outs of being a football player. However, it doesn't mean you don't understand the game...

Being a parent doesn't make me superior, it just gives me an understanding that you cannot have, because you aren't one. You may think you know how you'll behave and think as a father, but trust me, in many aspects you don't, because fatherhood changes you in ways you can't fathom!

And the reason I know this, is because I've been on both sides of the fence.

As to McGuire, I didn't say he wasn't grubby, just not that big a grub, certainly compared to players like Fifita or Gallen for example, who are the type of players the game could do without imo.

Not going to bother chiming in on the parenthood debate, but in regards to McGuire, I disagree, he's an absolute **** of a grub hahaha. The amount of hair pulling, pushing and sly cheap shots he does is up there with the absolute best of them. Fifita has more or less grown out of a lot of the grubby stuff he used to do, McGuire is significantly worse.

Fifita was the most penalised player in the competition.

McGuire isn't even in the Top 50.

What the **** even is this thread right now

Luckily the question wasn't who was the most penalised, it was who was the grubbiest. The amount of times I saw McGuire pull someones hair, rip off someones strapping, whatever it maybe (And not be penalised for it) was quite substantial. Fifita gets penalised for being fat and lazy in the play the ball.

Give it a rest UB.

Incidents like the hair pulling and the sledging incident (incidentally between himself and Fifita) have created this perception of McGuire, but the figures tell the real story. In the past 5 years, the only time McGuire has been in the Top 50 for penalties was 2014, where he gave up a staggering 15 penalties from 24 games.

Give what a rest?.. You're the one who's bringing up historical penalty statistics while we're discussing the arbitrary grubbiness of a persons play style.

Nashy said that McGuire is a grub, Porthoz made a counter-argument that he's not anywhere near as grubby as Fifita & Gallen. Listing how many penalties each player (excluding Gallen?) has conceded doesn't really add anything to the discussion. Josh Hodgson gave away more penalties than all 3 of those players in 2016 & 2017, do you view him as the grubbiest player in the game?

I don't believe you did. You mentioned the Islanders, that's already been sorted out by the NRL by looking at weight. When does that start, next season I think?

The way you've posted further up would suggest your little dude won't be being a footballer, and that's fine, I don't care, but I'd like to know the reason behind it.

I'd love to see some information about it too. Because it pops up from time to time that it's a big problem, parents won't let their kids play footy because of the thuggery, but is it actually a thing? Or is it the fact that AFL is bigger in QLD than it once was, Soccer actually rates a mention here, and kids also have access to all the American sports?
I'm both old and a parent but I can't stand parents deciding which sport their child plays. I left it up to my son. I just exposed him to as many sports as I could. Golf, tennis, soccer, rugby league, swimming, everything I thought he could be a chance at. I didn't pick and choose because of a bias rather I took into account his massive size. He was called a white samoan at one stage but he was pretty slow across the ground. Turned out he had a problem in each ankle which took two full years to correct so the boat had sailed by then. Point is I let him decide what he liked to do. I did the same with musical instruments and like myself he plays a few now.

Thing is like soup I think wrote, I was an expert on parenting up until I became one. Truth is I've been both old and yound, parent and non parent so like others in the same situation I'm best placed to comment from the perspective of experience and wisdom.

Update on McGuire: a friend of a friend who’s close with him said the motivation for leaving is that by the time he gets to the final year of his broncs contract he feels he may he overshadowed by the young crop of forwards (at least as far as hype goes) and thinks he may end up with a downgraded contract. The cowboys 3 yr contract with TPAs results in at least $150k more per year and continues that money for an additional 2 years. For him it was purely financial future based. As usual Bennett did not want to stand in his way of making a better financial decision for him and his family. End of story.

Nah, if I can't talk about it, you can't either. Why? Your son played football, was invited playing football. So, with that in mind, I will continue my questioning to someone who doesn't want their child playing in the thuggery of RL.

And my argument wasn't as weak as a shitty gif was it?

I think on the field, Moose is on the same level as those two examples.

Come on man. You don't get penalised for rubbing someone's face, or standing up by pushing your elbow into a chest or back.

We are talking about grubs, not Ill discipline.

So, my (adopted) dad was as big a league player as any. He played until he was mid-late 30’s, won all the best and fairest trophies, Captain/coached the All Whites club team for years, played rep teams and then coached my All Whites team when I was a kid. He’s all of about 5’8” or so, but is built like a brickshithouse and played second row like Trevor Gillmeister, though he was very fast on his feet over short distances, too. He also has a background being a black belt judoka which he states helped his game tremendously (70’s/80’s).

As I’m not his biological son, I’m built the opposite. When I was young, I was skinny and relatively short, but extremely quick. Lots of rep athletics teams. I played until I was about 14 with dad as coach but one day he tapped me on the shoulder and said that my neck was too long and the way I played (think stature of a young cherry evans but scrawny with the giraffe neck, but my nickname was ‘the axe’) it was likely to snap.

I listened to him, took up basketball, and won a comp against all of my ‘superstar’ school mates by playing in a team full of B graders. I’ve always appreciated that tap, but I also appreciated that he let me play for as long as I did, and truly believe I got out at the right time as everyone was maturing and getting a lot stronger.

Fast forward and I’ve got my first son playing RL here in Toowoomba, and bloody well, too. He’s also a second rower playing against much bigger blokes. In his later teenage years, he snaps his arm twice over three years with more time recovering than playing. He was lucky... you don’t walk on your forearms. If that had been his legs, he wouldn’t be able to do all the things he can do now. The doctor said no more to him and he listened, even though he was on scout’s radars. I’m proud of him for that decision.

If my younger son desperately wants to play RL, I won’t stand in his way, but I’ll push for oztag or touch first. I’ll certainly be exposing to as many other team and solo sports first though in hope he doesn’t end up going towards playing league.

All sports have physical risks, but full contact sports like league are excessive IMO, especially these days.

Happy to answer further questions but at this stage I’ve waffled plenty and my Captain Morgan Black is calling my name ;)

I appreciate the response, but it doesn't touch on RL beinf a thugs sport. If we were talking about parents being concerned about contact sport, fine, we wouldn't be here.

Singling our league is what I'm keen to hear about. You never hear union is a thugs sport, but they're no better.

Only from experience, never played union, but I played footy, afl, cricket, soccer and a few others, I never encountered people looking to hurt someone as much as in league. Like straight up only playing so they can hurt people smaller than them. It was unique to league in my experience. I wouldn’t call rugby league a thugs sport, but it seems to have an inherently high quota of dickheads and bullies.

But Bennett was not consulted at all remember.

I don’t watch Union, but I went to Churchie so played it all through school. The amount of grubbery that goes on in rucks and mauls is unreal. I’ve seen someone talk shit and then get rucked (basically the team stepping on him/ raking/ kicking him while he’s on the ground in a ruck) until he had to leave the field with injury.

I wonder if Moose contacted Wayne though? Probably.

Yeah, entirely possible. I was mainly being sarcastic, there are so many differing reports that are 100% contradictory, that it's impossible to know who or what to believe.
