NEWS Seibold’s final warning for failing halves

Tanah is the player who likes to get his hands dirty and isn't afraid to back his skill-set to make things happen. He has that Maloney quality where he doesn't allow mistakes to affect him and he can make a big blue one minute and come back with a brilliant play the next. I thought Ricky Stuart had that in him as well, and that's what you want to see out of your halves.

I don't see him as a dummy half at all.

Funny you should mention Stuart. He was the most ruthlessly effective ball distributor I've ever seen: my benchmark as a 40/20 kicker and, along with Johns, someone who could unpredictably swing the ball from one side of the field to the other at lightning speed. Unlike anyone in our current roster.

In contrast to his archrival, Allan Langer, who more often than not preferred to go it alone, chip to himself, grubber short, that sort of stuff. He verged on being a hog. Alfie would take it up the guts and beat his man, time and time again.

Tanah Boyd looks more like Alfie or my idea of a hooker, to me. Always moving forward. Always taking it up the centre, beating the first man, up there next to the ball carrier or chasing the kick. Always scheming.

This is what we currently lack. I really like the look of this kid.

Actually i have watched Carrigan in the U20s, Wynnum and Qld. He has always reminded me of an Arrow (although Arrow has evolved into a better player now, as will Carrigan i am sure) at the same age. He is a workhorse, but not a gamebreaker. I didnt say you said he was, but it is what we need at the moment. That is the type of prop we need. I agree he has all the makings of a future important player, but some of the talk up on here, i havent seen it to fruition YET. He hasnt had enough time yet in the NRL or even in one game to say he is a "future captain" etc. Nor enough time to be making errors, or being tired to fall off any tackles. That is all. Dearden is showing his goods in ISC, but he does not deserve to be built up as our savior either and i am telling you that he does not want people to say that either.

But you clearly said " i dont see him being a game breaker yet ", you wouldnt be saying that if thats not what you expect from him at some. Its a very odd statement from somebody who has watched him in the u20's, Wynnum and QLD as he has never been and never will be a game breaking player in the mould of TPJ when he is on form. I also find it odd if you have watched him for all those different sides that you wouldn't be able to see he is a born leader and quite easliy a good tip for a Broncos captain in the future when he makes the side regularly. He wasnt even Captain iirc ( @1910 maybe be able to help me out here, i could be wrong though ) when he joined the QLD u20's side but by game day he had made the role his own.

I'd actually argue at this moment in time that we need a game breaking forward. @Chewed made the point, and i think its bang on, that we just need our forwards to do their job and lay the platform for our backs to play. Maybe when we start holding the ball and completing our sets then we can look for that type, but right now, we need solid and reliable forwards doing their job.

At this stage, the fans would take anyone from the Queensland Cup as their 7, but when they point out the qualities they want in a halfback, this is the player they're talking about. He's very raw at the moment and the Broncos see bigger things in Dearden, but get your Foxtel IQs, TiVos, VCRs etc. ready for this Sunday at 1pm. Boyd vs. Dearden, it will be a good guide for what's to come.

I wouldnt rule out Dearden being involved against the Sharks.

Benji Marshall’s advice for Broncos under-fire halves
3befcee8716891a78213e5b0a5ba7aed

Benji Marshall reckons he was five years older than Kodi Nikorima when the penny dropped.
“I reckon it was only when I turned 30 that I realised how to organise a team,’’ said Marshall, 34, who played 13 games for the Broncos in 2017 and still watches every match the club plays.
Nikorima and halves partner Anthony Milford are under siege as a result of the Broncos winning just one of their opening six games.
Marshall, now back with the Wests Tigers, is watching on with a sense of empathy because his 16-year first grade career has weathered many of the same challenges.
When Marshall closes his eyes and thinks of his Broncos games he hears three big voices from the engine room.

“Sam Thaiday, Josh McGuire and Adam Blair were the three most vocal guys in the forwards,’’ Marshall said.
“But they are not are not there now. So Andrew McCullough, Darius Boyd, Alex Glenn would be doing more talking but the team must also find that next generation of leaders.
“I still think we are expecting too much of them (Nikorima and Milford) too early. It is not natural to them. They are not natural talkers or organisers. They are natural footy players.
“It can come but there is just so much pressure now on game management. When a team does not go well it always reflects on the halves. They are copping it a bit unfairly.
“The platform has not been as good as what it has been. The reason they had such success last year was they had a lot of leaders in the forwards. That has gone a bit.’’

So what did Marshall know at 30 he did not know at 25?
“Thinking ahead. Planning a couple of plays ahead. Setting up where you want to kick from. I watch all of their games and I think one of their biggest problems is they get to the last tackle and decide what their kick is going to be instead of pre-planning a few tackles ahead.
“I used to know where my best kick would be and we tried to get to that spot every time.
“When they get to the last tackle it looks as if they are thinking “I am going to do this kick.’’
Marshall knows well the stresses of trying to run and team yet shine as an individual.
“Sometimes I think — not Kodi and Anthony but young kids generally — in the halves can be so worried about organising everyone else they forget about their strengths.
“I was guilty of that. I forgot about my running game and became a ballplayer and I just wasn’t a threat.
“There was a couple of years when I went from 10 runs a game to two runs a game when I became a halfback and thought I had to be a ballplayer.
“When you think about Kodi and Anthony their strongest attributes are their running games but when you put them in those positions they are so worried about everyone else they forget about themselves.
“It is a tough balance to find and probably the hardest thing. I think Kodi needs to step up at halfback and take control — he had that in him and Milf needs to play off the back of him.’’

Is that inside knowledge mate ?

Kinda. I dont actually think its going to happen, but it wouldnt surprise me. Just heard a couple of things about some things they were working on with him at 7. Could just be he was getting included just in case he is needed and getting to know how we do certain things.

I'd like to see (eventually - when D Boyd's body gives out) T Boyd and Deardon in 6 and 7, Milf in 1 and Knik in 14. Maybe by then turps will be ready to hook.

Boyd has been the busier player this year, he is more confident and put this down to a few things- he's playing at his own club and he has Dennis who has no desire to play NRL so isn't taking ball off Boyd.

Dearden has been too passive, Scarlett takes all the ball and all the kicks- he still wants to play NRL. How good would it have been to see Dearden with Ben Walker and encouragement and ball he would have got there. Wynnum are too conservative and stifling him. Even Norths would have been excellent choice with Smith.

Boyd is the batsmen that gets a busy 50 playing at everything, Dearden is getting not out 16 leaving everything and watching every ball.

Boyd set up a try for Port on the weekend, went open, looked up saw the kick was on and put it on Port's chest. Dearden would never have tried that at all. He wouldn't have gone open to begin with- he sits on the left hand short side.

Dearden is cover for an injury this week but it's not Nikorima. I want him to stay in ISC and get some enthusiasm I would rather see him throw a intercept than not throw it at the moment.

What do you think, long term, the halves pairing is going to look like?

Pete what do you see the Broncos doing with the 6 and 7 jumpers over the next 3-4 years? Do we single out the best player out of our young crop and pair him with Mild or Kodi, and likely lose the other 2? Or do we develop 2 of these young fellas to be our future halves? Or do you think it will play out differently??

Was just interested in your perspective mate.

As it stands, the Broncos would like to think that 6. Anthony Milford 7. Tom Dearden is their future. If Milford continues to play the way he is, it will open up another spot but it remains to be seen which direction the Broncos would go in. They may chase the best half on the market, or show some faith in their development program.

Personally, I haven't seen anything in the development halves yet to give them the keys to the castle. They're not duds, but they're still finding their feet in Queensland Cup and it's going to take time to sift through who deserves an opportunity and who peaked in high school.

The problem the club is facing is that the NRL players aren't getting the job done. They've tried to be as patient as possible because there isn't this ready-made solution banging down the door, but the situation is so dire, they have to give somebody else an opportunity.

The common sense approach would be to have somebody come in at 7 and push Kodi onto the bench as the utility. If I was Seibold, I'd consider taking Kevie's approach and having Macca start the opening 20 and letting Kodi play the rest.

Tanah Boyd looks more like Alfie or my idea of a hooker, to me. Always moving forward. Always taking it up the centre, beating the first man, up there next to the ball carrier or chasing the kick. Always scheming.

That's fair, I just think Tanah is too skillful to be made into a dummy half at this point and believe his best position is 7.

I also think one of the reasons why we're seeing such a dirth of quality #9s is because there's very few natural 9s in the competition and they don't have the game-sense to know when they can run, play short, play long or just have that steel to them.

Problem is i feel these days with letting them develop in QLD cup is there is always some club with bucket loads of money that will throw massive contracts at unproven kids. We have done it with Haas, Bulldogs threw a million dollar contract at Carrigan, Roosters threw huge money at Jayden Nikorima. The money can be tempting to these players if they dont want to go the common sense route of developing at a slower pace. They wont all do what David Fifita has done.

Is this a thing? It would explain a lot if it is.

Dearden sounds pretty much like Nikorima 2.0... from this description at least. The way Nikorima played for majority of 2018 - stuck on the one edge, happy to barely receive the ball, not trying to get involved much.
