They both deserve to be dropped but seibs probably feels like he can’t afford to with all our outs. They are also on a combined 1.5 mil salary (we could have signed Ponga for 1.1-1.2 and gone after some experienced vet for 300-400 if we had that lying around) and we have 3.5-4 mil not playing already.

I think the club has made the right long term call by investing in blokes like lodge, dearden, Carrigan, flegler, haas, fifi, Staggs. All of the listed players win us games. We just have too many shit older players on too much money and it throws our squad out of whack. We have like 2.3-3 mil wasted on blokes who shouldn’t be at the club (Bird, Boyd, Oates, Milford, Joffa).

Agree mostly. My issue with AS is if you go to the press conference and use youth as a reason for getting smacked then you have to stick with that policy.
Shitting the bed and throwing a winger into the forwards is not going to fix anything and it's not part of your long term plan.
He is reacting to media scrutiny which shows , to me at least, he isn't sure of himself.
Live and die by your own beliefs, show a little backbone .
The squad is crying for leadership but the coach is showing none.
The fish rots from the head first , as the saying goes.

I don't think this is a short term view.

The Broncos have three young players in Herbie Farnworth, Xavier Coates and Fanitesi Niu who they view as the future of the club. Oates' days in the backline are numbered and if he doesn't make this transition work he'll be shopped around.

Same deal with Dearden who is viewed as the future of the club but since he's only 19, he was supposed to play in reserves so when he was called up, he would be ready to execute the systems set in place. Unfortunately there is no reserve grade so there's some pressure to play him early, especially since he is one of the better players at the club already.

Personally I think the Broncos have jumped the gun considerably on these young players and it all goes back to the club's recruitment and retention. The club has little choice because the blokes ahead of them aren't getting the job done and the players that should be coming into replace them are deadwood.

I agree, but do you also feel there’s external pressure from the the rest of the competition that when a Brisbane player doesn’t get promoted, because it’s a Brisbane player, they pounce and then the club gets pasted for ‘not being able to keep the good kids anymore’.

I don’t think you can slow-cook kids in QCup as long as you’d like anymore. I think DCE was the last high-profile player that came in and was (probably over) 100% ready and that was a decade ago.

Maybe Pete. I don't think Oates would be near the forwards if we had done remotely better than we have.
Given we have Glen, Fifita, TPJ and Teo available shortly I just can't see him as anything but a filler.
With Lodge, Offa, Haas, Flegs and Carrigan as certain top 17 it just doesn't leave a lot of room for a wanabe forward . I don't think Hoppa has been too bad either. He dropped a couple of passes against Parra but TBF they were rubbish passes and he was ordinary in an ordinary pack against the chooks. He is certainly worth persisting with as our fringe first grader as is Bullemor.
Personally I think it reeks of a bloke who reads the papers and pays too much attention to the media.
He would do well to remember Waynes old saying , if you listen to fans and media it won't be long before you are sitting with them.

If we were going to the market with the money ponga wants, i wouldnt be going for ponga. I would be trying to get hodgson up here (although very unlikely). I know we dont have great luck with the english but he would bring maturity, direction and experience to our forward pack. Improve our spine, is a leader and get those one on one steals he does so well.

So will it take another flogging this week to FINALLY drop Milford, Boyd or Oates?
Those 3 should be dropped well before Arthas.

To utilise a captains challenge requires a player to actually talk and ask for it, something our entire playing group is incapable of.
We used one last week. Tried to use it the week before too but the ref told us to bugger off.

I believe it's more internal pressure than anything else. The Broncos promote themselves as a development club and love to trumpet the amount of NRL graduates in the side. So there's this push to constantly promote from within whether the young players are first grade standard or not.

I wouldn't consider an U/20s learning their craft in QCup slow cooking. Even so, I disagree especially in light of Ryan Papenhuyzen and Scott Drinkwater who have been two of the early stand-outs this season and both needed time in the QCup to hone their craft.

The move has been on the cards for awhile, the early results have sped the process up, but this wasn't completely out of the blue either. Oates has been struggling since last year's Origin series and Seibold has a huge rap on the players I brought up earlier. Oates was already looking over his shoulder before a ball was even kicked.

Keep in mind too that Seibs likes to have a back/forward utility on the bench which suits Oates to a tee.

If you look at the defensive structures, it's the edge defence that's really letting the Broncos down, they're holding their outside men back because they're too slow to make the tackles that need to be made. It's nothing against them, both players are middles being asked to defend on the edges but it's being exposed. Oates was actually an edge forward coming through in the 20s and has some NRL experience, including a match winning try against Penrith in the only one acceptable instance of the seven tackle set.

Changes had to be made and with Seibold's hands tied, this is the best he could come up with. He's paying the price for poor roster management, but I don't really disagree with any of his changes, he just needs to make it work.

There’s every chance we get flogged this week, then flogged again the week after. Then it’s hold your breath stuff against the titans.

Everything put aside, do we all beleive that we will come out with better defence/line speed, ball control, attitude to win etc. Or give a performace similar to last weeks?

Manly will play finals, and will go deep into November I reckon. We will get destroyed again.

I'm more quietly confident this week they will be competitive but lets wait and see teamlist Tuesday.

Deadset if we just hold onto the ball things will be different, will we win? Doubtful but we won’t get flogged!
I was putting a chunk of wood on the fire when I wrote that last part, so I haven’t jynxed us 🤪

I'm predicting a much closer game.

Players were genuinely hurting after that Roosters game so you would expect them to put in a much better performance against Manly.

Whos got a copy pasta of this article? Paywalled

Had an honesty session Friday.
Glenn says the team doesn’t communicate - they’re afraid of offending each other.
If they see someone pull up short at training, they won’t say anything.
Glenn will be back with TPJ for the Knights.

Question is, how does Milford respond to being benched.. takes it as a challenge or throw a massive million dollar hissy fit?

Does he even care enough to go either way? Genuine question. Haven't seen much passion in his game for a long time. Is he just content to cash his paycheck each week?

I honestly hope not, but I'm far from convinced at this stage.
