2024 State of Origin - Game III Discussion

Cotter just looks too small and was monstered every time he ran the ball. The fact that we even had to pick Capewell shows just how low our forward stocks are from injury. Ok defender but shows zero with the ball in hand.

Nah, this series turned in NSW favour after that send off. They have been managed to this series by Klein and the NRL. We just couldn't overcome it
They were toying with us physically mate..: we had no shape and no one to stand up to them. We put on a good display early tonight but it was always going to end one way

We didn’t have to pick Capewell, we have one of the best back rowers in the comp playing for the titans

Edit: grant was dog shit this series. Reminded me a bit of Macca

The Maroons put themselves in a position to win it but the key players failed to execute when it mattered. When the game was there, they just lost their way and mistimed their passes and didn't challenge the Blues where they could be vulnerable.

It's Origin so you're always disappointed, but the boys gave it a crack and Patty did the jersey proud.

Need to see a bounce back from Walsh - didn't play his best game and that tackled into touch was a bad moment.

Thought the game hinged on Ponga and Kalyn was clearly short of a run. I don't think the team is big enough for him and Walsh.

Also at the risk of repeating myself, I can't stand the presentation. I hate how often the camera cuts away from the action or switches angle at a key part. The less said about the commentary the better - at least there's a mute button, I can't do anything if they'd rather show another close up of Billy.

Yeah I thought we were kept in in it tbh that first half in the play the ball. He could have penalised us more. We were so slow in the ruck. Capewell and Carrigan were having picnics in there. They had to do it though because the difference in physicality and size is just so evident with the injuries and weird selections. They did well to stick in it so long tbh

I don't have an answer but something has to be done about the short dropout rule.

Simply isn't enough reward for getting through your set, getting a kick in the goal area and tackling the opposition their. You do all of that then its a lottery if you get the ball back from the dropout. I understand they want to make it a contest but in that situation when the attacking team has worked so hard should it be a contest to get the ball back?

Throw in the risk you take putting the kick in that could result in a 7 tackle set should you get it wrong or knock it on attempting to score a try.

Again i dont know what the answer is but the risk V reward for attacking kicks into the in goal area is almost not worth it to the point you might as well just run a hail mary play on the 6th.

I thought we were miles offside in the first 20

I don't mind losing to a better side. But this whole series was fucked by the officiating and blatant game managing.

Vlandys would be doing an evil Monty Burns steeple fingered laugh right now while all of QLD RL burns.

I can't wait for the Olympics to kick off because I just do not enjoy rugby league anymore with the state of the game and the direction it is going.

Remove the 6 again and have Klein publicly drawn and quartered would be a decent start to repairing the game.

Only because we were put under fatigue by Klein for the second game running. We didn't play well, but we were always going to crack at some point then have nothing left to fight back.

If the series was reffed correctly, it would have been a better spectacle. Let's face it, this is the second game in the series they should have had a bloke sent off and Klein bottled it.

On the Ponga at lock sub, that really only works if your forwards are on top. Our forwards were never at any point going to get over the top of that NSW pack. But he made the move anyways and Ponga offered little and didn't defend well in the line to boot.

Probably just needed to be a swap for Walsh at that point.
Was wondering if he might just sub him onto the wing and then position the rest of the team around it

Could've brought him on for Gagai... who wasn't really offering much... moved Cobbo to centre (because Val was going alright on the wing) and then in attack you have Capewell shift to centre in attack, Cotter to second row, etc. but play with two fullbacks.

I think two fullbacks is somewhere a coach will go one day and if they make it work then tactics will change hugely. Wahs might not be too far off with RTS on the wing at the moment.

One thing I noticed when Ponga and Reece were both on is that they still went through the forwards on one out hit ups.

I think if you're sacrificing a middle forward for Ponga then you just had to get things to the edges and just keep going side to side to get NSW moving side to side in defence.

We were doing that for a set inside the 20m... and I think that was exactly what Billy had envisioned.

Ponga attacked the left with some stepping and ball playing... then they go to the right and Walsh is getting it out the back of shape... Billy may have had an orgasm seeing it happen on the field.

That was when Walsh went down for the late shot to the back, but no penalty... would've been interesting to see how the attack might've gone if they got some sustained possession in that setup to see how it went.

Its hard to see the 10m but the ruck was bad. We pushed the envelop but we had to. Just physically not in it after the first 10mins. Still had chances though but they couldn't lift their feet to get in position with the ball

Mate I just had this exact same conversation with my 8 year old that I’m going to have with you.

No one wins all the time… sometimes the opposition are better than you. It’s ok to cry but stop now and be a man. Dont blame others for your faults, shake it off and we’ll get them next year

Klein at half time spoke to both captains and told them to fix things up because it doesn't look good for the game.
Why was he talking to Yeo though... they only conceded like 2 penalties + six agains... they were damn near perfect in Klown's mind... yet he tells him to clean it up 🤔🤔🤔

Should have just left the rule as it was I.e penalty if you get it wrong.

Wonder if NSW bother with Cleary next year. They seem to play better without him.

The only problem I had with Klein was the DCE penalty for the Luai little push and shove and missed high tackle on dearden. That should have been either play on or sin bin the two 3rd men in and move on. He tried to let the game flow but jesus there is only so much you can take when 1 team is absolutely lying in the ruck. He could have called 30 six agains it was that bad.

We averaged 4.09 seconds in the play the ball. It was brutal. Looked like a Melbourne Storm game from 2009.
