Australia vs India - Test Series

Warner & Cummins ruled out for the last ODI & the 3 T20I's.

Cummins just getting a well deserved rest after a long campaign in the IPL, unsure on the severity of Warner's groin strain, but he's hoping to be fit for the tests.

D'Arcy Short has come in to the squad and may open with Finch in the T20's.

Here's the side I'd go with in the T20's with that news -

1. Aaron Finch (c)
2. D'Arcy Short
3. Steve Smith
4. Matthew Wade
5. Glenn Maxwell
6. Alex Carey (wk)
7. Daniel Sams
8. Sean Abbott
9. Ashton Agar
10. Andrew Tye
11. Adam Zampa

You could argue we're a batsman short, but I think with how good Sams, Abbott & Agar are with the willow, we could get away with playing 5 specialist bowlers.

Edit: Throw Moses Henriques in for Ashton Agar if we need an extra bat.

Is Agar actually any good?

He always seems to be around our squad but apart from Trent Bridge a few years ago I haven't really seen any notable performances. Surely if he was good at t20 an IPL side would have picked him up - he is 27yo now.

If I was going a pure T20 side (not from who is available but given Stoinis, M.Marsh and Warner are out injured and Cummins rested), I'd go:

1. Finch
2. Short
3. Smith
4. Lynn
5. Inglis (wk)
6. Maxwell
7. Abbott
8. Starc
9. Zampa
10. Hazlewood
11. Ahmed

I’d go something like that too. I’d rest Starc and Hazlewood and let them get ready for the tests.

Disappointing for Warner and definitely not an injury he can return early from with his running between wickets. Massive lifeline for Burns.

On a side note, it was brought up in commentary during the first ODI and worth discussion; the following will be the ages of our batting stocks for the next WC in 2023:
Finch - 36
Warner - 37
Smith - 35
Marnus - 30
Maxwell - 35
M Marsh - 33
Henriques - 37
Wade - 35
Stoinis - 34
Carey - 33

At some point in the next 18 months we're going to start having to look at guys like Inglis, Green, McDermott, Meredith, Renshaw, Phillippe etc.

I think those ages are two years off but the point does stand, there needs to be a generational change at some point.

That said, by that stage, guys like Green, Inglis, Pucovski, Fraser-McGurk, J.Richardson, Sutherland should be in / coming into the prime.

I thought it was mid-2023, seems like it will be Feb/March and in India. Maybe a few of them are a year off if that's the case.

Either way, I think the likes of Maxwell, Smith and Finch will probably still be on the T20 scene so could perhaps still be up for 50 over cricket. A few from that list (and maybe a couple bowlers) will almost certainly be retired from international cricket.

Cameron Green to debut today for Aus.

I think it'd be a mistake and I got told Sunday the plan was he'd go to Canberra and then head to Sydney for the two A games. Much more to be gained by playing in those two games than tonight. Langer should stick to his original thought.

Yeah, not sure. Ben Horne is reporting this morning that Green will debut today.

The way I see it is today would be the perfect time to debut a new addition to the team. They would go in with basically no pressure and could get the first game nerves out of the way in preparation for more important games

Starc, Cummins and Warner out.

Agar, Green and Abbott in.

I like it, good to give these guys a go in a dead rubber.

Marnus opening with Finch.
