Capewell is the exception not the rule. It’s probably not fair to include a guy who just turned 23 either. Hoeter is a great comparison though I will admit - and he’s a 3rd string depth option as he should be, which Billy is not.

Actually..... Billy was probably the third string hooker at the beginning. Turpin and Paix should have earned the hooker spot but they weren't very good and lost the spot to the 3rd string hooker. Says a lot more about the quality of those players than it does about Kevin "guaranteeing his son a starting spot".

Paix was unfit and not up to NRL standard for most of the year. He improved by the end of the year and should have been on the bench over Turpin. Walters was the best hooker we had this year because the 2 that were supposed to be our hookers were either shit, or not fit enough.

I disagree that Paix was worse than Walters but because I don’t have an agenda I’m okay to accept that is your view. I do agree he needed better fitness but he was fit enough for his 40 minute stints. Which for the record, I’ve never had an issue with.

I'm against extending him for three reasons:

1. He should sign somewhere else now his resume has an entire season of NRL. I can't see his value getting any higher than it is right now. That somewhere else will be in another country as no other club will offer him a regular spot. This is the best long term option for him. It's all downhill from here at the Broncos.

2. Ideally, we will have better options than Billy this season and his father will be able to relegate him to the injury backup role that most of us here think is his best position. That means at some point his father will have to drop him. That's not going to be easy for Kevvie, but if he doesn't he's going to face accusations of favouring his son, and it's going to breed resentment both with fans and his team mates. Best to forsee that now and avoid it altogether.

3. If we leave a top 30 spot vacant we have the flexibility to move a Train and Trial player or someone who just comes along, like Levi, Segarayo or Luke did. If we sign Billy we're fucked. We will be have to hear how he's our "only option" for yet another season.

If we do have to extend him, he should get the same contract tenure as his father, because - let's be honest - they come as a package. We don't want to get stuck with him like we did Darius Boyd.

Not wanting to sign a sub standard player and having someone else in mind aren't the same thing. Which is what I said: I'm happy not to be in the position where he is our best option if it leaves the door ajar to someone else. I actually agree with you though I do think we should’ve made more efforts to find a better option over 2 seasons. But what happens when he doesn’t get base wage for 1 year? Then do we agree he’s a bad signing? Because I have no issue with Billy on a one year min wage contract. Let’s see what happens hey

I don't think we need reminding our recruitment team have been fucking useless at finding hookers. It's pointless arguing about what happened last season, but we CAN'T go into next season with the same scenario where this mediocre player is somehow our best option, and the coach won't drop him. Our scouts have had plenty of time to suss this out. There is no excuse.

If it continues next season, such accusations of nepotism won't be implied, they will be implicit.
