Broncos Roster, Signings and Rumours Discussion 2021

I tend to agree re Milf though I am making the same fatal mistake that thousands of SC players make every pre-season and expecting a decent uptrend in form from Milford.

Mann is a great bit player at 5/8 with a strong but not flashy running game. While he’s a good addition when you have more dominating forces elsewhere (eg 7. Pearce, 1. Ponga) I think our spine will look even less potent with Mann replacing Milford, unless Deardon ages 5 years in 1 off season and starts acting like a Thurston.

A potential spine of 9. Macca 6. Mann 1. Isaako could be the blandest spine combination ever jotted on a team list. It’s a shame Peter Wallace is retired because adding him at 7 just might open the gates of purgatory.
Careful with that Peter Wallace talk........some fuckwit in the Brisbane brains trust might just think its a good idea.

only season Hunt wasn’t better was 2016 in 2015 and 17 when Hunt and Milford were the halves Hunt was by far better. Hunt was our most important player and the fall off since his exit is proof
Hunt has been real hit and miss since he joined the Dragons........which is to be expected TBH. He's been hit and miss his entire career.

Quit it lads, this conversation is pointless and nothing but personal insults.
I don’t think it’s pointless at all.

This thread is intended to be for legitimate rumours with sources / links only, yet you have to sift through page after page to try and find anything even remotely on topic (which, if I am honest, I am sure I have contributed to).

I have never once criticised the staff of this forum, however in this instance, no one has done anything to bring the conversation back on topic, yet condemn these posts (which I also acknowledge and accept) when the initial criticism stems from me trying to do just that.

Yes, I see the glorious irony in this post being off-topic, but I’m genuinely mystified why this was pulled up but the thread being way off topic remains kosher.

That said; I’m certain the forum will tell me if I’m being over the top.

Allan did well behind a very strong pack, that has excelled the past few years. Souths struggled at the start but came good once their pack was in order. Not saying our pack isn't as good or couldn't be better. I believe Isaako's issue is a confidence thing, told all last pre season he was heir to FLB, next thing you know Bird is in line there? Then Nui signed so Titans don't poach him. Reckless.
Add in all his external issues Isaako has had to deal with, he needs to run the ball back hard similar to RTS, Hunt (in his day), then slowly develop his passing game, when he has more confidence at the back.

I think Issako is the solid, low risk option for now at 1 but he isnt going to develop a passing game and i dont think he is ever going to run the ball back hard. I'd like him to prove me wrong, but i've seen no evidence of any improvement in his passing in 4 years, and despite his size he doesnt really seem strong or have an physicality about him. I actually think he is a worse version of Josh Hoffman but he can kick.

Apparently we have signed a youngster from the Bulldogs.

So Pearce keeps making mistake after mistake, but Bird has never been any bother aside from his injuries and Lodge's behaviour has been examplary since he has been here. I'm not really sure what you are trying to say, that it was a mistake not to sign a dickhead but to keep two blokes that weren't?
I'm saying the excuse Bennett used to not signing him didn't cut the mustard. He can't say a bloke doesn't fit a culture and sign Lodge the same time (I'm a fan of Lodge and hope he stays)

Pearce would have been a brilliant signing for Brisbane in 2018, but not now.

It's a matter of whether Bennett could afford to give Lodge a chance. Considering he wasn't looking for much to restart his NRL career, Bennett was willing to give him that opportunity and it worked out under Bennett. Pearce was roughly on three times the amount of Lodge and from all reports has been acting up in Newcastle. Unless you were confident he could deliver you a premiership, it just wasn't worth the risk.

I get what you and a lot of people think about Lodge but I can also see where Bennett might have been coming from.. Lodge committed one horrendous atrocity that wasn’t related to football whereas Pearce’s misdemeanours, while not as severe as what Lodge did, have the potential to be far more detrimental to the mood and culture of a football squad imo..

No. Bennett’s position was completely inconsistent as regards the two players.
Indefensibly inconsistent.

Bennett was right not signing a bloke who gets off his face then does unspeakable things to poor little defenseless dogs. Look at what he has done since. He backed his judgement on Lodge and its worked out. Pearce never was and never will be the answer for the broncos

How is it inconsistent when the ‘crimes’ committed by the two players in question are vastly different?
