Broncos withdraw offer for Hunt

Brisbane Broncos chief executive Bruno Cullen admits hopes are fading in the club's bid to retain star fullback Karmichael Hunt.

The Queensland Origin star and the front office at Red Hill have come to a firm impasse in negotiations for a new deal once Hunt's expires at the end of the season. The fullback's manager, David Riolo, has rejected a purported $1.2 million offer over three years which would make him the second-highest paid player behind Darren Lockyer.

Cullen has since withdrawn the offer to Hunt and said today he now held little hope of having the hard-running custodian in Broncos colours next season.

Cullen denied he was playing "hardball" with Hunt but said the club needed to move on or risk not securing a player to replace the fullback should he move to French or Japanese rugby. There are currently no rival NRL offers on the table.

A couple of interesting things hee that have been bolded.

so it looks like Hunt won't be playing in the NRL next year. if he doies it will possibly be less than what the Broncos offered. eusa_think

I didn't realise that the offer was actually rejected first. eusa_think

****...seriously, how is $1.2 million not a fair deal?
Go to Union already you selfish ****.

I hope this doesn't turn into another Petro where the manager rejected the offer without talking to the player properly about it. Although K would have to be living under a rock to not know the offer is on the table and if Riolo hasn't discussed it with him he should be going directly to Bruno himself to sort it out.

I agree the money he is being offered is well and truly what he is worth probably a bit more TBH. The problem Hunt and his manager are having is that Hunt is now finding ti hard to get 3rd party deals due to the incident last season.

If he wants more money he is kidding himself, surely his manger is just a retard with a uni degree playing with Hunts career.

Which is exactly why he should have grabbed the Broncos offer when it was first tabled. He is going to struggle to get 3rd party deals anywhere in Australia and I seriously can't see any other NRL club or a Super 14 club offering the same playing money. And there has been no offers from Japan at all at this stage. He should seriously take this, be 100% on his best behaviour for the next 3 years and he'll get a much better deal again then - sponsors will probably be more likely to cough up the 3rd party deals again if he keeps his nose clean and he is (hopefully) an even better player.

I agree he is still very young and will be able to get a decent contract in 3 years he may even choose to go to England.. I really hope he stays, I can't see him playing for another NRL team though. I reckon his manager is shopping him around.

He's pissed at the media?

He's the dickhead who decided to get his rocks off in the toilet? Spoilt little brat.

"I get the impression he's not that comfortable with a whole lot of things in his life at the moment and he might be just thinking the best place for him is not in Brisbane," he said.

"He has told us he doesn't have a problem with the club and he doesn't want to play with another NRL club and he appreciates the offer we've made him is a pretty good one and he'd love to be, and this might sound a conflict, a long-time player at the Broncos.

"In saying all that there's this other thing out there that has attracted him to a degree to see what is it and what is it worth.

"And if it is there 'am I better being out of there for a year or two or more and then perhaps even come back at a later time?'."

From Bruno's own mouth.

Doesn't look like it's about the money to me.

He is probably annoyed that he was fined by the club as well.

I love all the assumptions everyone makes.

Don't bother saying anything if you don't know the facts.

Yeah he can have all the feelings he likes. But it's his own fault, so he can't whinge about it. He fucked up, no one else.

Maybe partly about money (and I've always said that I don't have any problems with players chasing coin), but yeah it also seems to be about getting out of Brisbane.

I'd be all for the idea of a 1-2 year break if he's going to come back cashed up and hungrier to play. At least he still seems to be a Broncos man through and through (as far as NRL, even league, is concerned).

Darn shame. So what other Origin/Aus Rep fullbacks are available? Sigh.

Who cares if they're not rep status yet?

The biggest thing for me is that it seems like he's angling to have a holiday then come back. No Hunt, once you go you are gone. We will move forward and build for the future, one without you in it.
