Building towards the future.

I'm whining about Peter Lollace hindering Ben Hunt's development for the last 2 years.

Why the change in tune? You always seemed to rate Wallace highly and seemed a little upset to see him go. What's changed now to have you 'hate' on him?

Enough about Wallace. This thread is about the future of the Broncos, not reminisce on the club or people's past agendas!

And that sentence should've been encased in [BAIT] [/BAIT] brackets.

Thinking in 4/5 years time

barba
vidot
copley
reed
hoffman/drew '(if Hoffman stays it has to be on the wing and Drew is a future full time centre)
milford
hunt
mcguire. (Should stay in the front row)
macca
wallace (Obviously seen as the future and he is a young no nonsense prop I don't mind him at all)
gienn. (Always left out but he will be here as long as he wants to be)
thaiday/oates (Thaiday would only be in his early/mid thirties and could still be around)
gillett

molo
lee (hooker/lock/second rower which would invaluable)
dodds (was hitting form before his injury I reckon he will be back)
Oates/grienke/Adams (a good young hole running second rower, Adams can also play front row, grienke is comfortable in the centres as well)

The only problem with that is the future of this club is in the hands of those who have already shown they can get stuck in the past.

Also, there's a great saying. It applies to Barba for one: what you eat today walks (or waddles) tomorrow.

Equally, today is the tomorrow you worried about yesterday. Things change.

Speculation can be fun. What did the pope say about speculation? STOP, you will go blind! Now where is the keyboard ....

We'll be fine as long as we don't blow money on big name players just because they hit the market. Example being DCE, great player but we shouldn't need him once the combinations between Barba, Milf, Hunt and Macca are in motion. So paying overs for him when we don't really need him would be stupid.

That you still have Reed in a first 17 in 2018 (in the centres especially) is laughable.

Loving this thread. It's exciting to think what this team can produce in a few years. The only thing that irks me is the notion (pushed by some fans even if inadvertently) that this season is a "write off" since we were unable to secure Milford this year.

I think it's BS. If a player the caliber of Lockyer or Smith were on the way then yeah maybe. Milford, in a lot of ways, is still untested particularly defensively and in the halves. I hope everything works out ok...

Fair point.

Although I know when I say something to that effect, I'm also referring to the fact that our 20s will be a year older and closer to stepping up as well.

Got to agree that every season is precious and you can't be a team like the Cowboys or Rabbitohs were in the early 00s and blood players for the sake of blooding them.

They'd go through something like 35+ players a season and maybe one of their 13 blooded players would go onto do anything useful.

I agree with you CaptainHook IMO since we all know Milford will be our 6 next year, we are better off developing our young halves in the ISC and to a lesser degree the NYC.

Not only can they develop without the pressures of trying to lead a side like the Broncos around the park, but we also limit their exposure to talent scouts from other clubs, who will have an easier time luring them away from us after we drop them back to ISC level next year when Milford arrives.

I'm very positive about the future here I feel we are building a very good team that is capable of making inroads in the competition and competing consistently.

The signing of Milford will hopefully end all of our troubles regarding the halves pairing which has been a major problem since Lockyer's retirement. Ben Hunt is developing into a fine halfback and Hook deserves credit for giving him a permanent spot. We've got some very good up and coming players in the ranks and already have a pretty good roster imo.

I think we have got a pretty solid foundation built for the next phase of the club. Milf/Hunt in the halves with Taylor, Pa'auia as future options. Barba, Vidot, Copley, Reed, Hoffman, Drew, Kodi all options in the back line. McCullough at 9, with J Nikorima as an alternative (assuming Granville is gone to the Cowboys).

It's the forwards that worry me. If we consider Parker, Hannant and Thaiday (not to mention Lowrie or Stagg) are all approaching the end of their careers, that leaves us with Glenn, Oates, McGuire and Gillett as proven first grade commodities.

There's the possibility of Molo (or another from NYC) , Wallace, Hala or Kennedy stepping up, but we can't rely on possibilities - 2/4 is about what I'd expect. That still leaves us light, especially as we need depth for injury cover. We need 2 or 3 other options. Lloyd Perrett is an option, and perhaps we could use Kearney's Kiwi connection to snag a few up and comers from over the ditch?

I am another who thinks we have a potentially good future but because I am old school I believe our priority should be in the forwards. A couple of earlier posters mentioned it and I reiterate their thoughts, we are weak where it counts the most. The old saying 'games are won and lost in the forwards' still rings true. I believe we need at least two fearsome props although one with another in the mould of Civonceva would suffice. As my great mate says, you need a couple of props in any team who put a genuine fear into the opposition.

On the halves I give very little credit to Griffin for Hunts breakout season. Griffins hand was forced, who else was available to play halfback ? The credit goes to the man, Hunt himself. I want the useless Hoggman gone and most seem to consider that a foregone conclusion but Griffins pigheadedness is legend and he may persist with him if he remains,I hope both go.

Back to my first point, without an improvement in our forwards I believe we will be a small and easily covered rung below the best in the league.

Id rather use Kearneys kiwi connection to move him across the ditch.

Our future forward pack looks good for size but we are talking 4 years away with Molo and Collins added up front and Arrow coming in at lock.
We need cover until then from outside or keeping Hannant and Kennedy stepping up

Every other team relies on their possibilities. Look at the Roosters. Players like Cordner and Napa were possibilities and now they're fully fledged first graders/Origin players. This whole not relying on under 20s players is crap. We are the only team who doesn't do that anymore. Instead we buy outdated players like Stagg or play a winger at five-eight. Our under 20s team is currently on top with the Knights. That says to me that our NYC players are the best crop of young kids in the NYC. Yet we're the only team who literally never utilizes them.

Might want to stipulate that "never" part.

I think having a forward problem is delightful. Our spine has been our weakest area for quite a while now. Storm and Manly prove that in today's game a very good coach can win multiple premierships with a class spine and average forward pack. If we keep McGuire, Gillett & Oates our forward pack is still going to be decent at worst. Basically we have everything we could possibly need to challenge for multiple titles except the good coach. Fix that and we have back to back potential.
