DCE backflips to stay at Manly

Can't help but feel that Manly has painted itself into a corner here ... Huge leap of faith / investment in one player for a huge amount of time ... They better hope everything goes smoothly for the next EIGHT (8) years !

I thought it was a six year contract with a 2 year option. In any case I think they might end up like the Cowboys with Thurston, with one gun half but no money to buy him a decent partner. Anyone who comes in cheap or through the juniors might have a few good years then have to leave for another club, as I understand DCEis guaranteed is certain slice of the salary cap (~25% or so).

In general it's a pretty shitty thing he did to the Titans, but honestly I can't say I wouldn't do the same in his situation. It's easy to be a moral saint on the internet without any cost, but as a man with a young family it'd be hard to turn down a guaranteed minimum $10 million, especially in an industry where one unlucky injury can take away a career in a second. I don't at all agree with what he did or how it was done, but it's difficult to stand in judgement.

I shudder to think of the other "conditions" of his contract. Is he going to have to be consulted on coaching? Recruitment? Will he have more power than the coach?

More sensationalism and ridiculousness.......

I honestly don't think it's out of the question. Look at the power Robbie Farah had. It's been well documented that DCE is incredibly ambitious. This has extended to wanting input and consultation in terms of coaching and recruitment. Already. It's clear that Manly seriously bent over in order to keep him, 8 year deal, do you think that DCE is going to play good soldier and just do whatever is asked of him, by whoever asks him, alongside whoever he's told to be with, even if he doesn't agree with it?

I like the real estate analogy, if anyone on here can honestly say they would not use the cooling off period if they had made an offer on a house then a very similar house in the same street became available at 100 k less then they are probably lying

Was that my reference to real estate or did someone else use it as well ?

Yes huge, I read your post which referenced real estate and agree with it, all the judging of DCE should be done in context of what you would do in a similar situation.
I guess DCE has attracted criticism because of the reasons he is trying to convince the public with. E. G. one club player, he has backflipped for money plain and simple, he would have been better off just saying it instead of trying to bullshit to everyone.

And herein lays the dilemma ! If you tell the unvarnished truth, you're greedy and if you colour it a little you're disingenuous ! Like yourself I tend to imagine how I would act were I him . The other thing I try to do is judge others as I would have them judge me. I'm not perfect and because of that I don't expect others to be and the part I find galling is that so many ( Paul Kent ! ) in the media and on the internet rave on with self righteous indignation. I say , build a bridge ffs, move on because in the end, how does it affect you ( collectively speaking here !)

He's a dog.
She's a bitch. Imagine you received a job offer, 120 k a year, second in charge of a major retail store. You might say, yes I'll take that but can I have a week to think it over ?. 6 days pass and you receive a different offer, 150 k a year and the boss of a brand new major retail store. What do you do ? Are you a dog for taking the better offer or are you doing what's best for you and yours. You said yes in principle to the first offer but had a week to think it over, does that mean you must honour it or did having the week to consider it give you the right to reconsider ? No matter, it's just a thought.

I will be booing every time DCE touches the ball tonight and I encourage others to do the same. I have not taken this position lightly as I go to the footy with my kids. However, I want to teach them the lesson that in life your word is important and if you break your word there are reputational consequences for doing so.

I hope when he gets booed with every touch that it serves as a good life lesson for my kids.

Up the Broncos.

His decision doesn't reflect badly on his word, but the rules of the Nrl. I'm 100% the titans knew (as does every other club signing a player) that until rd 13 passes, there's a chance they may opt out of the contract, it's not breaking his word. It's the reaction of sensationalist media nothing else.

You can't tell me you wouldn't do the same if you were in the same situation. He is set for life and then some! It's one thing to keep your word, but also there's looking after yourself- because no one else in this world will.
Good on him!

I would never commit to something if I wasn't decided. Just like when I was offered a job with another company last year, when offered, I told them I would make my decision after speaking to my current employer.

After he gave me his offer to keep me, I went back and said unfortunately I wouldn't be able to take the job unless they agreed to X. They didn't, and we parted ways.

What I didn't do, was agree. I then didn't go an tell everyone I was 100% going to go to the new job, I didn't continually lie and say that I was going and that nothing had changed. The one time they called me through the week, I advised them I was not yet decided.

Keeping your word is one thing and integrity is a great value to teach your children. But booing someone for earning more money and playing by the rules to do so? Come on!!

Unless I am mistaken- DCE never said he was 100% going to the titans. He was asked the question and he just said at this point in time nothing has changed. I could see through that at the time, clearly he sorted the titans deal and then the ball was in manly a court to offer something before rd13. Even if he broke his word- who cares-It's smart business on his behalf really, and all in line with the rules of the game.

Sleeping with your mate's misses does not break any rules but is the wrong thing to do. Just because he did not break any rules does not make it right.

It isn't good business to do things that harm your reputation. He may have got a huge deal but people will never trust him again.

He is 100% deserving of the boos he will cop at Suncorp tonight.

Oh well, I'm sure he'll be able to buy some diamond encrusted earplugs to drown out the boos of the unwashed.
