Does anybody know which network purchased the broadcast rights to the Auckland 9's? I can't seem to find any info on where to watch it!

It's only on foxtel, not free to air sadly.

Yeah, Knights are taking it fairly seriously too.

It'll be embarrassing for the Raiders if they are the only ones phoning it in.

That's a top line up for the Knights , they're in to win it.

Wayne Bennett did promise they would come to win.

I was talking to a colleague who is in the New Zealand Police Force tonight.

Her friend has scored the Job of being the Police Minder of the Broncos.

He is absolutely rapt ( the candidates were chosen form known Rugby league supporters / cops who have a lot of input into Rugby league at community level ).

How's this for a gig.

The assigned officer has to stay in the Hotel , Sit on the Bench in plain clothes at training an during games......When you see someone you don't recognise on TV during the Shots of the team sideline that's one of ours

^^^ You read it there first.

NRL wants complete lockdown for inaugural Auckland Nines competition

THIS is the NRL's confidential security and risk management plan sent to all 16 club chief executive's, which warns that players could be lured into fixing matches and are at risk of being offered performance-enhancing or illicit drugs during next weekend's Auckland Nines tournament.

The nine page document illustrates how serious the NRL are to ensure the inaugural Nines tournament is free from the seedy headlines which have plagued the recent off-season.

The NRL's Integrity and Compliance Unit (ICU), led by the NRL's chief operating officer Jim Doyle, compiled the thorough and detailed risk management plan last month with the intelligence and assistance of the New Zealand Police.

All 16 NRL clubs will descend on Auckland next weekend with over 300 NRL players and officials in attendance.

Never before have the NRL attempted such an extraordinary logistical challenge in another country.

It's why, written in black bold letters, the document underlines the NRL's focus on "minimising the risk and ramifications of criminal acts, anti-social behaviour contrary to New Zealand law and acceptable social standards, and other breaches of the NRL rules by players and officials.''

Those risks, according to the ICU report, include:

* Insidious people approaching players offering inducement or threats to compromise performance for betting and wagering

* Performance enhancing or ilict drugs (in-competition stimulants) being offered or innapproriately provided or surreptitiously administered to players or placed in players hydration supplies or pre-game supplements

* Theft of players valuables and other personal items and clothing as souvenirs or memorabilia'.

The ICU reports also stresses that a "strong message will be developed and communicated to all players to educate them and advise them as to the expected standards of behaviour with the aim of being to deter inappropriate behaviour.

A potential impact on the tournament, according to the report, are two other major events in Auckland next weekend, most notably the concert of US rapper Eminem next Saturday night, where a crowd of 50,000 is expected.

The ICU are already aware that some NRL players are planning to attend the concert.

The other major event is a Festival to celebrate Chinese New Year, which the ICU report warns that following advice from NZ Police, 'some criminal and anti-social behaviour' is expected.

Both events will be held less than 10-minutes from Eden Park, the home of the Nines tournament.

As first reported by The Sunday Telegraph last December, players and officials will be dispersed around Auckland in separate hotels, warned against attending the city's hot-spots and be bound by a strict code of conduct.

And fans will also be curbed from unruly behaviour by being served mid-strength beer in plastic cups.

The influx of tourists into Auckland, where every hotel is fully booked out, ensures the protection of the players is of paramount to the NRL.

It's why every club will boast their own body guard with the NZ Police assisting in the recruitment of 21 off duty NZ Police officers to act as Event Liaison Officers for each club and the NRL referees.

Dean Lonergan from Duco Events is the co-organiser of the event.

And like the NRL he spoke of a focus on delivering a scandal-free event, both for the players and the spectators.

"The NRL has been adamant from day one that protecting their brand is absolute paramount and we've worked with them to ensure that,'' Lonergan said.

"One hundred thousand dollars has come out of the budget to ensure the Integrity Unit can do the job they need to do and we will support them entirely.''

Canterbury Bulldogs chief executive Raelene Castle said the NRL's risk management plan was imperative, while adding her player's focus was on a successful Nines tournament, not late night benders.

"When you run an international event of this size and quality, this is just part and parcel of how you take care of athletes and I think that's exactly what they've (NRL) done and they should be applauded for it,'' Castle said.

"We'll be sitting down with our players, as we do for every other event we attend, and be very clear on what is expected.

"And for us, our players will be in football mode.

"Its about high performance and playing well on the field and so there'll be some constraints around that.''

Roosters CEO Brian Canavan said he hoped the premiers hectic pre-season schedule, which includes the Nines tournament followed by the World Club Challenge against Wigan on February 22, would curtail any excuse for players to be out past their curfew.

"I think the NRL's plan is very thorough. But from our point of view, we're not phased by it mainly because as soon as we get off the plane on Monday, we're preparing for a huge game the following Saturday night,'' Canavan said.

Strugglers like the Raiders really can't afford to live and die by an NRL campaign sword exclusively , like I say I feel for their supporters.
Don't mate, while I would've liked to have seen them take it seriously the reasoning is sound, why risk potential injuries over a nothing comp. Warriors being the home team would've felt compelled to name a strong squad, Sharkies are desperate for money, I won't be surprised to see most teams treat it with the same contempt as the Raiders have.

Don't underestimate us this year, the players are buying what Ricky's selling, looking fitter than ever before and the trial match showed a lot of promise with the juniors vying for positions. The year is looking very promising for Raiders fans.

See guys, if a Raiders fan can be this positive then why can't we? Especially considering we have a much better team, coach and spine than them.

Haha all very debatable but I don't want to derail the thread. One thing I will say though is you guys would love the dilemma we've got in the halves, too many quality ones now that McCrones been pushed to hooker, couldn't believe how comfortable Cornish, Wighton and Ahearn looked there last night.

I'd prefer Steele Retchless. How is this guy not an action hero with a name like that?
