NRL Player Movements and Rumours 2015

It comes down to exposure as well if you don't have rich benefactors, no FTA games limits it severely. If you were a sponsor would you pay for a player who is on FTA almost every week or a player who is lucky to be on tv 2 or 3 times a year.

Its not a go at the Broncos mate they play the cards they are dealt, the decks just stacked to favor certain clubs.

I don't understand what rich benefactors means sorry? Free to air games I don't think would make any difference.

Raiders player wants some third party deals.
Manager approaches 3 companies- for arguments sake- Coke, Apple and Ford. They all agree to use said Raiders players for endorsements.

Those three payments would be not included in the cap- again for arguments sake none of those companies are Raiders' sponsors.

Manager has done his job and it doesn't matter if the player lives in Canberra or Townsville. Cowboys don't get FTA games or have any 'rich benefactors yet Thurston has plenty of third party deals- Skins and Skytrans.

Blame lazy mangers not location.

Hey, if it weren't for mangers Jeebus wouldn't have had half as many good props decorate his birthday parties.

You don't see how rich benefactors like the thoroughbreds, Crowe and Politis would help in that regard.

Cowboys get more FTA games plus you are using the best player in the comp who is everywhere even without FTA games, have you noticed how rare it is for a Raider to be on a footy show, how even when their games are reviewed they are skimmed over in comparison.

Lazy managers well considering all clubs have players managed by the same people it's funny how they can get it easily for some clubs but not others.

Mate as I've said I'm not attacking the Broncos they are playing the cards they've been dealt but it's hardly a level playing field. Some clubs having up to $2mil TPAs to others $100k (as reported a couple of weeks back) isn't purely down to how a club is managed.

Rich benefactors may not matter but everything else mentioned does.

Let's take the best forward in each team who hasn't played Origin - Shaun Fensom and Josh McGuire. You think Coke, Apple and Ford wouldn't rather have McGuire as a promoter than Fensom? Raiders have a **** all population, so Fensom appeals to a smaller demographic.

Part of the reason people know about McGuire is because the whole state of QLD can watch him every Friday night. The actual audience that tunes in would be larger than the whole population of the market Fensom is in, so even if every single person in Canberra had Foxtel and every single person watched Fensom play, he'd still be showing to a smaller audience than McGuire.

Obviously both are forwards and neither will be marquee spokespeople, but I bet Milford's market is a shitload bigger now.

Rich benefactors are usually successful businessmen, who will undoubtedly be very well connected to a whole raft of other successful businessmen. These are the folks making the decisions on whether or not Player X gets a TPA from their company.

Uncle Nick is the most obvious, as well as Rusty with his Hollywood mates. I have no idea who's in the thoroughbreds, but it's clearly the same principle.

I'd be interested to see where you've plucked the 2 mill figure from.

But that situation assumes that you can only use people to promote your product in the area they play, that’s simply not accurate. It doesn’t matter how many people are in Canberra. Why would you be limiting your market?

Cameron Smith is on tv advertising a Victorian beer in Queensland while he lives in Melbourne. That's a third party deal outside the cap so organised by him and his manager and he isn't wearing any Storm gear.

You’re getting two different things confused.

If Politis is sourcing the third party payments then it is on the cap and a limited amount you can spend- 600k.

Everyone has the same amount to spend if they’re a club sponsor.

If you’re talking about non club sponsors then your statement some clubs have millions of undeclared third party deals -The whole comp was $10 million last figure I saw so I doubt very much one club would be millions.

If it is sourced by the player or the player’s manager and the company is not a sponsor of the club than it is exempt from the cap. So if Cornish’s manager can negotiate a huge deal with a company they can give Mitch a billion dollars and it won’t be on the cap. His manager can get him 10 deals worth a billion dollars and make him bigger than Jordan.

In this regard every player and manager has the same brief- go find your client deals if you want his pay to go up. Like the example I used above; clearly Smith and Thurston have been able to make deals that see them have exposure outside the areas they currently work. They’re not limiting themselves to Townsville and Melbourne.

Talk to their manager and find out why they’re no on VB ads into Queensland or Skins ads around the country. Vidot was playing ISC this year and on the radio for a car yard in Ipswich. They’re not a Broncos’ sponsor so his manager did that. If you can sell Vidot it’s clearly not that hard for a manager to sell his client and get him deals and outside the city he’s playing.

1. You're dreaming if you think clubs don't assist off the record, even if it's just putting people in contact.
2. You're even more dreaming if you think that Brisbane/Ipswich is comparable to Canberra/surrounds (Queanbeyan?). This is a public service and small business town, there isn't the private sector money to do big TPAs here.

Go to Sydney you might say. Well in which sector of Sydney do you think a Canberra player is going to be worth anything to any business? The place is already lousy with local NRL clubs, and a reasonably strong second tier comp. It's saturated.

I don't particularly give a shit about Sydney/Canberra clubs, personally I love the situation the Broncos are in. But if you think it's a level playing field in practice, you're mad.

Wow parra has been killing it on the recruitment front.

All they need to do know is decide if they want to keep Sandow or Norman (who has been great this season, especially when Sandow isn't on the field), and signs legit fullback like a Brett Stuart.

To a degree the former is true. You can only sell things in areas where people give a shit about who you are.

Which is why Cam Smith can sell beer in QLD. He's the QLD State of Origin captain. People know who Cam Smith is. No doubt being a rep player is a large part of it.

It's not that you can only promote products where you live. It's that you can only promote things in areas where your profile counts for something. And it's much easier to build a profile playing in a big city team than it is in Canberra. Also much easier if you are on FTA every week.

Unless I'm selling something specifically in Canberra, than who am I more likely to want to pay money to as a promoter of my products? Josh McGuire or Shaun Fensom? Or if they are rep players, Josh Papalii or Matt Gillett?

I'd be very fascinated if someone asked Milford's manager if he thinks he can get more endorsements with Milford a Bronco rather than a Raider. I'd be stunned if he said no.

@josh_massoud: BREAKING on @7NewsSydney: @SeaEagles extend Jake & Tom Trbojevic until end of 2017, sign @GCTitans young gun Kane Elgey on a two-year deal.

Well, they have the cash to splash around if DCE isn't going to renege on his deal.

Yep, bittersweet for the Tits. Looks like the DCE deal is a goer but LG is gone as a result.

So.. who's gonna partner DCE at the Titans next year? Elgey gone, Sezer gone, Mortimer bad..
