Panthers sack Anthony Griffin

Don’t rate Griffin as a coach tactically or otherwise but on outside seemed like player relationships were his key strength at the Broncs.

Wonder what the real story is? Agree it’s win win for Gould. They crash it’s Griffins fault for leaving them in this situation, they do well it’s Goulds genius... wish I had that job.

Seems like Griffin is a under 20s coach with young guys that buy into his bullsh*t and don’t know any better.

Yeah - his people skills can't have been that bad. Remember when Hunt (and McGuire also if I recall correctly) was pretty vocal about being gutted Griffin was being moved on for Bennett.

So the Panthers have offered Ivan Cleary a 4 year deal.

Wonder if he'll take it ?

This is really baffling to me. I do not understand the hype around Cleary.

He made the finals once in his four years at the panthers, is going to miss the finals this year.

Meanwhile Hook has finished 6th, 7th and a probable 4th in his time at the foot of the mountains.

And Cleary was voted second best coach in the players poll.

I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

Made the GF at the Warriors.

Surely this would be Gus' last chance saloon for the coaching ranks. There is only so many coaches you can go through until they start looking at other areas that might be the problem. Feel a bit sorry for Hook because its not like the panthers are a shit team and he has done a real good job getting them there. He hasn't run them backwards from when he took over the team by any shot.

I don't know why people believe the Gould hype. He appears to me to be one of those guys who thinks he's the smartest in the room when clearly he's not. His record shows that he is all over the place like a mad woman's piss. To reinstate a previously sacked coach just to retain his halfback son is mental. Gould not doubt sees it as a genius move. He is fast becoming the Trump of the NRL

If Cleary ditches the Tigers to go to Penrith then he is massively tarnishing his name and the Cleary brand imo. Why would he do it? His son can eventually come to the Tigers if that's what he wants.

That and Cleary knows he is in charge at the Tigers. At Penrith, he always has to watch his back for Gus trying to pull rank all the time.

despite Gould suggesting that hook was sacked because he had lost the dressing room, when questioned the captain said this:

PANTHERS STAR ADDRESSES GRIFFIN DECISION

Panthers star James Maloney says he had no issue with Anthony Griffin in the wake of Penrith's decision to sack him as head coach.

Speaking this morning following the shock announcement last night, Maloney was asked if Griffin had lost the support of Penrith's senior players.

"He didn't lose my support," Maloney told Sky Sports' Big Sports Breakfast.

"I had no issue. The whole thing has been kept away from the players. The talk around this started back in pre-season and it's sort of gone throughout the year.

"I suppose when it's this external stuff you just block it out ... you don't take any notice of it.

"Like all the boys I found out on the news last night."

the following quote also proves, at least IMO, that Gould is getting rid of hook because hook won't be his puppet:

More from Phil Gould on Anthony Griffin: "We offered as much assistance as we could but he was determined to do things in his own way.

"In all of that process, while we were having a good year, there were some weaknesses there."

Players are never going to come out and say they didn't like the coach and wanted them gone etc.

They will always come out and say they supported the coach blah blah blah and keep all of that shit in-house.

They are likely to offer him shed loads of money I guess over 4 years.

Exactly and as stated, he has control at the Tigers.

Thinking about it further...

I’d take Griffin back here on the condition that he’s never head coach (write that into his contract) or in charge of tactical decisions. Some of the blokes who he brought through might respond to him being around, and he seems good with bringing talent through: he just isn’t cut out to be a head coach. Kearney is an average coach, but was great for us as an assistant.

Edit: his crowning achievement was playing Hoffman at 6. Shocking.

I find it completely plausible that Gould got rid of Hook because he didn't do want he wanted, but seriously when has a player ever publicly backed a coach? That is proof of nothing.
