Round 26 Broncos vs Storm - Pre Game Discussion

Stop betting against them and you will be the ultimate "true fan". You are almost there, I know you can do it :)

I bet against them because whenever I bet Storm to win by 13+, they don't.

Most of the time, they didn't even win.

Siding with SF on this, betting knows no allegiances - simply a payout on a result.

I've never bet on anything before but I dont see anything wrong with betting against your team, you'll still cheer if they win and get a payout if they lose.

This game has the potential to be a classic really.

Two sides coming into their best form, both have great confidence with superstar players whose actions can swing a game, a finals spot on the line and mad monday on the horizon for the loser.

Is Lockyer allowed onto the field with the players during the warm up?

I think he should go out there, to be honest. He should go out there and talk to the boys, especially Hunt and Barba. After the warm up, huddle up and say a few words to the team, motivate them. I would expect the same from Parker, as well.

On some positives. The last time Broncos played Storm, they actually managed to get a fair few scoring opportunities but weren't smart enough with the ball.

If they can offload, get some second phase play and take advantage of their weak defense on the edges, who knows what could happen?

They simply cannot try to grind out a win, because they won't. They can't grind Melbourne down, they are not good enough. They have to play attacking footy.

My biggest concern is their inability to hold quality teams out.. And our fucking shocking record in Melbourne.

21% win record..

This is one thing I want to see the Broncos do on Cronk...

The one positive for the broncos is it has been a long time since Melbourne have been in a position of fighting for a spot in the 8. We don't know how they'll react to that pressure. Hopefully not well.

Defence will win it for us.

The multiple grand final and Origin winning combination and experience of Smith, Slater and Cronk versus the raw talent of Hunt and the lackadaisical stylings of Justin Hodges and the Barba enigma.

Storm $1.36
Broncos $3.05

Does it shit me to no end that the Broncs with so much talent are in the spot where they need to win to get in the eight? Sure
Does it shit me to no end that Sloth took more than 20 weeks to figure out that Hoffman is not a five-eight? Sure

Still.... I love the fact that we are in with a chance. If we win in Melbourne, it proves our medal and test what kind of heart and soul this side has. What would be the point of beating a weak side to make the playoffs and then get bundled out in round one? Yeah I know it is better than not making it in... again but still let's stay positive, win a tough match and see what is possible.

I know it's not technically correct but I'm looking at it this way.
Watching from the nose bleed section Friday night, we played our qualifier for the finals. Sure felt like it.
Means an extra week obviously but if Broncs can't beat Melbourne then it's over IMO.
Possibly deluded but to go on a winning streak all the way to the GF - oh the glory!
Go hard lads

There couldn't be a better time to break a hoodoo than on Friday night. If Cowboys win tonight then the Broncos/Warriors/Bulldogs all win next weekend the Storm would miss the 8 which would pretty amazing.

ever since we got the original "JUST WIN FFS" guy back in here, its been working

Would be nice to tick the box of "made the finals 2014" but the Top 4 sides (Roosters, Rabbitohs, Manly and put Storm in there - Panthers are first round exit specials) are leagues ahead of us. Line speed, size, wrestle, play the ball speed, structure, kicking game.

All we've really got is Ben Hunt's dummy.

This is our week one of the finals. Put in a good show boys.

If we knock the Storm out of the finals.... boy, I'd start to get my hopes a little higher.

Hoffman is due back this round isn't he?

I doubt Griffin is going to suddenly change his ways so I'd assume if he is fit to play then Hoffman will be given a spot somewhere in the 17. If it was up to me I would reluctantly select him on the wing over Vidot, only because he'll be a target for Cronk all night due to his inability to catch bombs. I know Maranta had a shocker last time we played the Storm so I probably wouldn't mind if he was dropped instead.

At least if Hoffman is back in the line-up he can do some defending at fullback, otherwise I think Hodges will be found out.

You're looking at it the wrong way. What you should say is:

All they've got is line speed, size, wrestle, play the ball speed, structure, kicking game.

We've got Ben Hunt's dummy!

A couple of things I would like to see :
1 Some decent pressure applied to Cronk on the 5th tackle. That probably means either Barba or Macca making a point of being at first marker on most 5th tackles.
2 More urgency when competing for high balls. We need someone like Barba to get to high ball as its coming down an really compete for it ( Like Billy Slater does)
3 Get at least a couple of good shots on Smith as he runs from dummy half looking for ball runners. Fractionally late would be OK
4 Zero stupid penalties from McGuire

Both Hoffman and Hodges are pretty ordinary defending in the back. In fact I would rather have the reliable Maranta, he at least has the balls to put his body on the line . I still can picture the pathetic effort Hoffman made on Inglis last time we played Souths. Hoffman can get into position quickly enough and reads the play reasonably well but his effort can be dreadful. Hodges has a bit of a problem if he gets wrong footed or is forced to change direction quickly and his arm grabbing attempts leave me cold.

So can you still picture it or is Maranta the only one with "the balls to put his body on the line"? Because I seem to remember Hoffman placing his whole body in front of Inglis.
