One question.

We've had some pretty tough games of late. Can we mentally, and physically keep this up for another two games?

Yep. In fact, having close tough games prior to going into a Grand Final is a bonus IMO.

Exactly. In fact I'd rather our run that Melbourne's. They've won 4 out of their last 6 games which sounds alright, but those 4 have been against absolute nuffy football teams. They haven't had a high intensity game for plenty of weeks now so I am hoping that will work in our favour.

On another note, this is a week in which I am glad Hammo is banned [icon_lol1.

no

would have to question how much is left in the Broncos' tank for this weekend. The Storm is a relentless side that will keep coming at the Broncos hard all night.

If Brisbane was on a level playing field so to speak with Melbourne in terms of rest and injuries (ie Wallace NOT being out) this game would be a real toss of the coin, but the Storm has so much in its favour for next week (rested, at home ect) that it wouldn't surprise me if the margin blew out a bit in the back end of the game.

Has been an outstanding effort from the Broncos to get to this point though, but in a comp as even as this, the physical and mental advantage Melbourne has over them this week looks too much imo.

I disagree- You can never write off a team that has Lockyer, Izzy and Hodges all in 1 team imo.

Not writing them off by any stretch, just highlighting some of the big difficulties that, imo, the Broncos face next weekend.

I'm sad that school holidays have fallen and that the AFL Grand Final is next weekend. All of the flights into Melbourne are ridiculously expensive and out of my price range so I'll be forced to watch this one from home unfortunately.

If we were taking a full team down there I'd be quite confident but the loss of Wallace is massive. He guided us around the park last night and that will be sorely missed next week. Still Docklands doesn't hold any fears for us and I'm confident the Storm won't blow us away. They'll probably be too good though...

Anyway what do I know, I thought St George would win last night... Anything is possible if Darren Lockyer is on the park.

i love how week in and week out everyones be going "we did it last night but next week we will get rolled"

After the Titans game "oh the dragons will roll us after that game" come on guys drop the negative crap and cheer on ay team.

It seems like everyones so worried about looking like a fool for saying "we will smash them" that everyones just planning a loss.

bugger it. Brisbane by 18.

I think it will be a close tough battle. Broncos by 6

I think its more the fans wrapping the current 09 team more than anything. Credit where credit is due IMO.

I for one - know the boys will fight tooth and nail for a victory.

BRONCOS forward Ben Te'o yesterday nominated himself as the potential saviour to Brisbane's halves dilemma ahead of Saturday night's grand final qualifier in Melbourne.

While shattered halfback Peter Wallace's 2009 season is over, Te'o is again fit and firing, and has urged Broncos coach Ivan Henjak to consider moving captain Darren Lockyer to No. 7 and handing him a shock cameo at pivot.

Henjak yesterday confirmed the hard-running backrower's bold plan for the Broncos' preliminary final mission against the Storm is among those to be debated at a tactical think-tank today.

Te'o, "Coaltrain" Dave Taylor and utility Alex Glenn are believed to be lead options for a halves cameo, while extended squad members, under-20s No. 7 Ben Hunt and ex-Origin rake PJ Marsh, also are in the frame.

Star No. 1 Karmichael Hunt and hooker Andrew McCullough are likely to remain in their current roles to minimise the impact on Brisbane's structure

If given to Ben Hunt, we will win the comp.

He will absolutely shine and will have us all questioning how to fit him into the 2010 team.

I like it this way as well, honestly everybody are writing us off and everybody out there have pencilled the Storm in for their 4th straight grand final appearance.

Ben Hunt can do it. As Gould said, the biggest mistake he and other coaches (especially Bennett) have made in the past is instead of trusting a young half to step in, they shift forwards around to fill the gap. Look at Tonie Carroll at five-eighth in 2008, Greg Bird at Cronulla etc etc etc.

The Eels trusted Daniel Mortimer, one of their under 20s, and he repaid their confidence ten fold. Admittedly he had longer to settle in that Ben Hunt, which would be now or never.

HOWEVER, the game plan the Broncos need to beat Melbourne almost lends itself to adding an extra back rower to the lineup. Te'o is also not devoid of skills, though I doubt he has a kicking game, not that that'll matter too much. Kicking will fall to McCullough, Lockyer and K. Hunt.

To beat Melbourne the Broncos will need that defensive line intensity we saw against the Dragons for 80 minutes, and then we'll have to rely on Lockyer, K. Hunt, Hodges and Izzy to make the most of whatever attacking opportunities we have.

I was confident in a 13+ win against the Dragons last week, but this week it'll be by no more than 10....and 1 will do it. I wouldn't say I'm confident we'll win, but I won't be slitting my wrists if Ben Te'o or Tonie Carroll is named in the 7 (and will play 2nd receiver).

Wallace has been the form player at the Broncos for the last month & a bit. We have to look at what we lose, and how we can try and replace it. Wallace's big strengths are his kick-chase, inside passes and defence. I'm confident B Hunt can have the kick-chase and inside passes covered, but given how fast the finals games have been he might struggle a little with the pace of the game. I think either Taylor of Te'o have the skills for the inside passes and obviously have the ability in defence, but may fall a bit with a kick-chase for 80 mins, but I'm sure that can be covered by someone else, as they probably won't do too much kicking with Lockyer, McCullough and Hunt doing most of that.

I don't think Wallace has been doing anything overly amazing on the field for us to be worried as much as some are. He's a good halfback, but he's certainly not one of those players who is always referred to as "special".

If Lockyer can do 06 with Perry, I'm sure he can do it with Hunt, or whoever he's got next to him. He has had two years, where the stress of the game hasn't been on him alone, so he's more than capable of controlling a couple of games, while executing God like plays, putting kicks up, and of course watching the rest of his team, and talking to them.

The Wallace injury is one of the least of our worries heading into this match at the moment.

I disagree only because Wallace was doing most of the kicking, particularly attacking kicks, and his inside balls are a feature of our play at the moment. Inside balls aren't the easiest ones to throw and get right (very easy to time it poorly so the runner ends up losing it, or it goes behind them, or goes forward) so it'll be difficult to just throw someone else in.

In any case it'll take some time for whoever gets picked there to gel with the team. And being a preliminary final, we don't have the luxury of time.

How many weeks have we been doing that now?

Ballamy isn't the type of coach to take a used game plan to. His troops will be shutting that play down all night. IMO.

We had also been going to Dave Taylor running hard at the line in the centres for weeks, despite the Cowboys, Raiders and Titans having it under control by throwing extra forwards there.

Dragons did the same. What did the Broncos do? Vary the play - Taylor twice passing to Hunt to score untouched.

I have no doubt the Broncos will have something new up their sleeve again this week. But at the very least it needs to be built on what we have been doing for the last 7 weeks, not a complete deviation from it.
